It's Presidents Day, Monday, February 19, 2018
Presidents Day is a federal holiday which, in the United States, is observed on the third Monday in February.

This day is set aside, by more and more of America’s population, to honor all of the past United States Presidents that have served our country.  Two of our nation’s most prominent Presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, are brought to mind as we celebrate this day.  Their birth dates, which fall close to this same time, have been honored for decades and always will be.

Presidents Day is celebrated with public ceremonies in Washington, D.C. and throughout the United States.

HISTORY

The origin of Presidents Day lay in the 1880s when the birthday of George Washington was celebrated as a federal holiday.

In 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Bill, which moved several federal holidays to Mondays.

During the debate on the bill, it was proposed to have George Washington’s birthday be renamed Presidents Day to honor the birthdays of both George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.  Washington’s birthday is February 22nd and Lincoln’s birthday is February 12th.

Although Abraham Lincoln’s birthday was celebrated in many states, it was never an official federal holiday.

Following much discussion, Congress rejected the name change.

However, after the bill went into effect in 1971, Presidents Day became the commonly accepted name.

Dexter City Offices Closed for Presidents Day
Dexter, Missouri - The city of Dexter administrative offices will be closed Monday, February 19, 2018 for Presidents Day.

Trash will be one day late.  There will be no bulk pick up on Friday, February 23, 2018.

"Presidents’ Day is an American holiday celebrated on the third Monday in February. Originally established in 1885 in recognition of President George Washington, it is still officially called “Washington’s Birthday” by the federal government. Traditionally celebrated on February 22 - Washington’s actual day of birth - the holiday became popularly known as Presidents’ Day after it was moved as part of 1971’s Uniform Monday Holiday Act, an attempt to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers. While several states still have individual holidays honoring the birthdays of Washington, Abraham Lincoln and other figures, Presidents’ Day is now popularly viewed as a day to celebrate all U.S. presidents past and present."

Click It or Ticket

Dexter, Missouri - Dexter Police will be joining efforts with statewide law enforcement on February 15th for an aggressive “Click It or Ticket” mobilization to get more motorists to buckle up — and save more lives.

Despite evidence proving the benefits of wearing a seat belt, 16% of Missouri motorists are still not making it click. Even worse, 65% of occupants killed in 2017 crashes in Missouri were unrestrained.

“Local motorists should be prepared for stepped up Click It or Ticket enforcement,” said Chief Sammy Stone. “We’ll be out there to remind you seat belts can – and do – save lives.”

Buckle Up and Arrive Alive.
