The sound of a snow plow coming down the street can be a great comfort to you. Our city of Dexter employees spent numerous hours clearing our roads so you could get to work or the grocery store.
Best estimate is that Dexter received around 7 inches of snow in a 24+ hour period. Some have seen less and others measured more. The official amount from the National Weather Service is 6 inches.
With all that snow, sleet, and ice we would like to thank the Dexter Street Crew!
The snow and ice removal team put in quite the effort over the past couple of days to clear our streets! They are still out there today and continuing their efforts!! With temperatures dropping below zero at night and not getting above freezing during the day, Mother Nature hasn't put in much effort to melt the snow, so it's been up to city workers to get the main roads cleared.
"They have worked tirelessly," commented Dexter City Administrator Mark Stidham. "We have on inventory between 65 - 70 miles of roads in Dexter city limits. They plowed some areas at least 6 times due to the rate the snow was falling."
That's nearly 400 miles of roads they plowed in just a couple of days.
Along with plowing of roads city workers were using cinders and a liquid salt solution on streets depending on the traffic flow in those areas. In all they used around 5,000 lbs of treatment. One could almost say that's about 70 lbs per mile. What an effort!!!
On behalf of the Dexter residents, we thank each and every one of you who spent time in the frigid temperatures to help us get back on the roads!

Dexter, Missouri - Several businesses in the Dexter area have been "burglarized" this week. Normally the ShowMe Times doesn't promote any negative news; however we want local businesses to be aware that unfortunately these things happen in our small community. Here are some tips to help keep those unwanted burglars out of your business.
"We have had some break-ins this week to a few local businesses," commented Dexter Police Chief Sammy Stone. "We are advising businesses to not leave money at their business, but if they do to leave as little as possible. Also leave a light on inside as well as have good locks on the front and back doors."
"You can't completely keep anyone out, but you can slow them down or discourage them from trying."
1. Locks - The ultimate frustration for the burglar is the double-cylinder dead lock which must be opened by a key from either side.
2. Alarm - If you can't afford an elaborate alarm system,at least a cheaper building-type local alarm system - which wakes the entire neighborhood and alerts the burglar, as well - is preferable to no alarm at all. At least it may scare off the thief before he's completed the job.
3. Money - Sometimes it's hard because of different people opening and closing, but try to leave as little as possible in your building or no money at all. Even hiding it outside of the cash register someplace a burglar may not look.
4. Put the burglar in the spotlight! Providing a lot of light, both inside and outside, usually is effective. Leave a light on inside, perhaps someone driving by may notice a not so familiar face in your business.
5. Install video cameras. Now days they are very inexpensive and you can view them on your phone via an ap.
You won't be able to completely keep a burglar out, but the more you do to discourage him or her the safer your business will be at night.

Dexter, Missouri - Do you have a "real" Christmas tree that you need to dispose of or recycle? The city of Dexter will take your "real" Christmas trees the whole month of January.
You can drop them off at the pool parking lot at East Park in Dexter.
All lights, tinsel, and decorations should be removed prior to dropping off your tree.
Please do not drop off plastic or artificial trees.
