Stoddard County, Missouri - The National Weather Service out of Paducah, Kentucky has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Stoddard County.

... WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FROM 6 AM CST SUNDAY THROUGH LATE SUNDAY NIGHT...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN PADUCAH HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WATCH... WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 6 AM CST SUNDAY THROUGH LATE SUNDAY NIGHT.

* WINTER PRECIPITATION WILL BEGIN OVER SOUTHERN ILLINOIS EARLY SUNDAY MORNING. THE PRECIPITATION WILL LIKELY BEGIN AS A PERIOD OF FREEZING RAIN... THEN TRANSITION TO SLEET AND FINALLY OVER TO SNOW. RAIN OVER WESTERN KENTUCKY AND SOUTHWEST INDIANA SHOULD MAKE THE TRANSITION TO A FREEZING RAIN... SLEET AND SNOW DURING THE DAY SUNDAY. RAIN MAY NOT CHANGE OVER TO THE WINTRY MIX UNTIL LATE IN THE DAY OVER THE SOUTHERN PENNYRILE OF KENTUCKY. MOSTLY SNOW IS EXPECTED SUNDAY NIGHT... GRADUALLY TAPERING OFF FROM NORTHWEST TO SOUTHEAST.

* A LAYER OF FREEZING RAIN AND SLEET MAY BE PUT DOWN BEFORE THE TRANSITION TO ALL SNOW. 2 TO 5 INCHES OF SNOW MAY FALL BEFORE THE SNOW TAPERS OFF SUNDAY NIGHT. LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS WILL BE POSSIBLE WHERE BANDS OF HEAVY SNOW FORM.

* THE COMBINATION OF ICE... SNOW AND FALLING DAYTIME TEMPERATURES MAY CREATE VERY HAZARDOUS TRAVEL CONDITIONS SUNDAY AND SUNDAY NIGHT.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A WINTER STORM WATCH MEANS THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT SNOW... SLEET... OR ICE ACCUMULATIONS THAT WOULD GREATLY IMPACT TRAVEL. STAY TUNED FOR LATER STATEMENTS. THIS WATCH WILL BE UPGRADED TO A WARNING IF WINTER STORM CONDITIONS BECOME MORE CERTAIN.

Snow Likely in Southeast MO on Super Bowl Sunday
February 01st 2014 by Jeff Huffman
Snow Likely in Southeast MO on Super Bowl Sunday

A fast-moving but ill-timed winter storm will blitz Southeast Missouri with a mixture of sleet and snow on Super Bowl Sunday.  The colder air required for the sloppy mess will arrive late Saturday night and early Sunday, with temperatures falling below freezing when showers end briefly as sleet or snow with little or no accumulation.  Following this front will be another weak disturbance flying in from the southwest, pulling moisture northward into the cold air.  A mixture of freezing rain, sleet, and snow will develop across much of central and northern Arkansas Sunday morning, quickly spreading northeast across Southeast Missouri by Sunday afternoon.  Although amounts will be relatively light, the fast-hitting nature of this system combined with the timing when many people will be on the move to and from their Super Bowl parties, makes it especially hazardous.

The air will likely be cold enough north and west of a Corning, AR to Sikeston, MO line for mostly sleet and snow from this event.  This includes Dexter, and in these locations accumulations will range 1 to 2 inches where sleet mixes in initially, to as many as 4 inches near a Poplar Bluff to Cape Girardeau line where it will be nearly all snow.  Temperatures during the event will be falling into the middle and upper 20's by Sunday evening, likely resulting in snow-covered roads through Monday morning.

TIMING AND AMOUNTS:

Margin for error is +/- 2 hours on the timing and +/- 1" on amounts

  • Dexter: starts Sun 2p, ends Mon 4a - 4"
  • Sikeston: starts Sun 3p, ends Mon 5a - 3" (sleet/snow mix)
  • Poplar Bluff: starts Sun 1p, ends Mon 3a - 5"
  • Cape Girardeau: starts Sun 6p, ends Mon 4a - 3"
  • Kennett: starts Sun 2p, ends Mon 5a - 2" (sleet/snow mix)

Stoddard County, Missouri - The National Weather Service out of Paducah, Kentucky has issued a Special Weather Statement.

... ANOTHER PERIOD OF BITTER COLD IS ON THE WAY...

THE BRIEF WARM UP THIS WEEKEND WILL BE REPLACED BY ANOTHER BLAST OF ARCTIC AIR... THAT WILL SPREAD ACROSS THE AREA EARLY MONDAY MORNING IN THE WAKE OF A STRONG COLD FRONT.

HIGHS MONDAY WILL RANGE FROM AROUND 13 DEGREES ALONG THE INTERSTATE 64 CORRIDOR TO THE MID 20S TOWARD THE ARKANSAS AND TENNESSEE STATE LINES... WITH HIGHS TUESDAY ONLY IN THE TEENS AREA WIDE. DURING THE DAYTIME MONDAY AND TUESDAY... WIND CHILL TEMPERATURES SHOULD REACH NO HIGHER THAN THE MID TEENS ANYWHERE. LOWS TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY MORNING WILL BE IN THE SINGLE DIGITS TO JUST BELOW ZERO. WIND CHILL TEMPERATURES AS LOW AS 5 BELOW TO 15 BELOW ZERO ARE FORECAST TO OCCUR MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY MORNING.

EXTREME COLD IS DANGEROUS FOR ANY EXPOSED SKIN... AS FROSTBITE CAN OCCUR QUICKLY. HYPOTHERMIA CAN DEVELOP AS WELL IF PRECAUTIONS ARE NOT TAKEN. LEAVING PETS UNATTENDED TO IN THE COLD PUTS THEM IN DANGER AS WELL. THESE COLD CONDITIONS ONCE AGAIN WILL INCREASE THE CONCERN FOR FREEZING AND BURSTING OF WATER PIPES. UNLIKE CONDITIONS ON CALM... VERY COLD NIGHTS... THIS BITTER COLD WILL BE WIND DRIVEN. THIS CAN CAUSE THE VERY COLD AIR TO INFILTRATE POORLY INSULATED AREAS MORE EFFICIENTLY.

Stoddard County, Missouri - The National Weather Service out of Paducah, Kentucky has issued a special weather statement.

A SERIES OF LIGHT... BUT FAST MOVING WINTRY SYSTEMS EXPECTED TODAY THROUGH SATURDAY...

THREE SMALL... BUT FAST MOVING WEATHER SYSTEMS WILL MOVE ACROSS THE QUAD STATE REGION BEGINNING THIS MORNING... THEN OCCUR PERIODICALLY THROUGH SATURDAY EVENING. AS EACH OF THESE SYSTEMS MOVE THROUGH THE AREA... GUSTY WINDS AND COLD AIR WILL BE USHERED INTO THE REGION.

THE FIRST WEATHER SYSTEM WILL MOVE THROUGH THE QUAD STATE REGION THIS MORNING. MAINLY LIGHT SNOW IS EXPECTED TO PUSH INTO SOUTHWEST ILLINOIS AND PARTS OF SOUTHEAST MISSOURI BEFORE DAYBREAK THIS MORNING. LOCALLY HIGHER SNOWFALL AMOUNTS NEAR AN INCH ARE POSSIBLE ALONG THE INTERSTATE 64 CORRIDOR OF SOUTHERN ILLINOIS AND SOUTHWEST INDIANA.

HOWEVER... THIS SNOW IS EXPECTED TO INCREASE IN INTENSITY AS IT MOVES ACROSS SOUTHERN ILLINOIS... MAINLY NORTH OF ROUTE 13... SHORTLY AFTER SUNRISE. THIS SNOW WILL THEN WORK EAST ALONG THE INTERSTATE 64 CORRIDOR THROUGH SOUTHWEST INDIANA... SOUTHWARD TOWARD THE OHIO RIVER BEFORE NOON.

GUSTY NORTHWEST WINDS 20 TO 30 MPH... ALONG WITH VISIBILITIES DUE TO THE SNOW LESS THAN A MILE AT TIMES... MAY CAUSE PROBLEMS FOR DRIVERS DURING THE MORNING COMMUTE. TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED TO RISE ABOVE FREEZING THIS AFTERNOON... MELTING ANY SNOW THAT FALLS OR IS ON THE GROUND.

THE NEXT TWO WEATHER SYSTEMS... EXPECTED ACROSS THE AREA FRIDAY AND FRIDAY EVENING... THEN AGAIN SATURDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING ARE EXPECTED TO PRODUCE LITTLE IN THE WAY OF ANY MEASURABLE SNOWFALL.

THE WEATHER SYSTEM ON FRIDAY WILL USHER IN THE COLDEST AIR... WHICH WILL LEAD TO WIND CHILLS IN THE 5 TO 15 DEGREE RANGE BEGINNING LATE TONIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY MORNING.

NORTHWEST WIND GUSTS BETWEEN 15 AND 25 MPH WILL BE LIKELY DURING THE LATE MORNING AND AFTERNOON ON FRIDAY. SOUTHWEST WIND GUSTS BETWEEN 25 AND 35 MPH ARE EXPECTED SATURDAY AFTERNOON. THESE WIND GUSTS MAY CAUSE DIFFICULTY FOR DRIVERS OF HIGH PROFILE VEHICLES.

ONCE THESE WEATHER SYSTEMS MOVE OUT... DRY... BUT COLD WEATHER SHOULD BE THE RULE THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF NEXT WEEK.
