
The Dexter Kiwanis Club recently awarded two $1,000 scholarships to two graduating seniors at Dexter High School. Kiwanis Education Committee members Kevin Bishop and Pam Trammell presented the awards to Dalton Putnam and Jennifer Aslin. Putnam is the son of Denny and Shannon Putnam; Aslin is the daughter of Tim and Lesa Aslin. Putnam plans to pursue a degree in pharmacy at Missouri State University in Springfield; Aslin intends to enter the nursing program at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau. Dexter senior Dalton Putnam recently received the Missouri School Board Association's Future Builders Regional - John T. Belcher Memorial Scholarship. Each school district in the Southeast Missouri region may nominate one student for the scholarship. Putnam's essay and application will now be submitted for the statewide scholarship which is another $750. Putnam was awarded the scholarship at the MSBA's Spring Regional Meeting held at Malden High School. CAPE GIRARDEAU – Southeast Missouri State University will offer its second annual summer Theatre and Dance Academy, an intensive theatre and dance educational experience for students in kindergarten through high school.
The Academy will be offered in two sessions: June 4-8 and June 11-15. Classes will be held at Southeast’s River Campus and in the Parker Dance Studio on Southeast’s main campus. Southeast faculty members and qualified senior level theatre and dance students will teach the classes, accompanied by a student assistant.
Morning classes to be offered June 4-8 include: “Ballet” for kindergarten-2nd grade, “Beginning Dance” for 3rd-5th grades, “Acting” for 6th-8th grades and “Stage Combat: Swashbucklers & Samurai” for 9th-12th grades. Afternoon classes include: “Acting” for kindergarten-5th grades and “Jazz” for 6th-12th grades.
Morning classes to be offered June 11-15 include: “Acting” for kindergarten-2nd grade, “Beginning Dance” for 3rd-5th grades, “Musical Theatre” for 6th-8th grades and “Contemporary” for 9th-12th grades. Afternoon classes include: “Ballet” for kindergarten-2nd grade, “Musical Theatre” for 3rd-5th grades, “Jazz” for 6th-8th grades and “Acting” for 9th-12th grades.
Students at all levels will learn a wide range of techniques to further their interest in the performing arts and increase their appreciation of theatre and dance.
Each class will conduct a final performance for family members on the last day it meets.
Classes will meet for one week Monday through Friday. Cost for a one-hour a day class for five days is $100, a two-hour a day class for five days is $125 and a three-hour a day class for five days is $150. Theatre and Dance season tickets holders and families with multiple children will receive a 15 percent discount.

POPLAR BLUFF - The Three Rivers College Music Department, by arrangement with Cameron Mackintosh Ltd., will present the musical “Just So” May 2-4 at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center.
“Just So,” with music by George Stiles and lyrics by Anthony Drewe, is inspired by the children’s stories of Rudyard Kipling, author of “The Jungle Book” and the “Just So Stories.” The musical also features orchestrations by Christopher Jahnke and Associate Orchestrator John Clancy.
Over 1,700 area elementary students from Poplar Bluff, Malden, Twin Rivers and Puxico will visit the Three Rivers campus to watch the show on May 2, 3 and 4. A public performance will be held Friday, May 4, at 7 p.m. in the Tinnin Fine Arts Center. Admission to the evening performance is $5 per person and tickets will be available at the door.

The orchestra will also include area adult music educators Scott Rybolt from Dexter, Audrey Bjornsen of Bloomfield and Three Rivers College instructors William White and MaryRuth Boone. Technical assistance has been offered by Robert Abney and Jon Abney. The production is directed by Three Rivers College music instructor Cindy White.
