Area Students, Teachers Prepare TRC Play

POPLAR BLUFF -  The Three Rivers College Music Department, by arrangement with Cameron Mackintosh Ltd., will present the musical “Just So” May 2-4 at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center.

“Just So,” with music by George Stiles and lyrics by Anthony Drewe, is inspired by the children’s stories of Rudyard Kipling, author of “The Jungle Book” and the “Just So Stories.”  The musical also features orchestrations by Christopher Jahnke and Associate Orchestrator John Clancy.

Over 1,700 area elementary students from Poplar Bluff, Malden, Twin Rivers and Puxico will visit the Three Rivers campus to watch the show on May 2, 3 and 4. A public performance will be held Friday, May 4, at 7 p.m. in the Tinnin Fine Arts Center. Admission to the evening performance is $5 per person and tickets will be available at the door.

The student cast, crew and orchestra include: Landon Hall, Shelle Killian, Brandon Sindle, Shawn Slavings, all of Dexter; Daniel Atwood, Henry Breitkopf, Jessica Deken, Tierra Higgins, Keith McCoy, Brett Russell, Alexander Swenson, Clayton Vass, Meagan Woodruff, all of Poplar Bluff; Donald Falk, Stephanie Henning, Logan McDonald, Silva Oesterreicher, Stephen Oesterreicher, Jonathon Scott, and  Melissa Stark, of Doniphan; Felicia Johnstone, Piedmont; Casey Julian, New Madrid; Olivia Nelson, Tabitha Pierce, Kaitlin Morgeson, Chad Belt, Jessica Jackson, all of Neelyville; Trevor Robinson,Sikeston; Allison Wilfong, Puxico; Cody Wilhelm, Taylor Heskett. Zalma; Cody Young, Naylor; Pride Wilder, Ellsinore; Tom Ricketts, Thayer)with choreographic assistance from Amy Shaver, Hartville.

The orchestra will also include area adult music educators Scott Rybolt from Dexter, Audrey Bjornsen of Bloomfield and Three Rivers College instructors William White and MaryRuth Boone. Technical assistance has been offered by Robert Abney and Jon Abney. The production is directed by Three Rivers College music instructor Cindy White.

College Celebrates Comunity College Month
April is traditionally Community College Month across America, and Dexter Mayor Joe Weber marked the occasion by signing a proclamation. Weber gathered with a group of Three River College students in the new science lab at the college center in Dexter on Wednesday morning. With Weber were (seated from left) Jordan Adams and Justin Robey, (standing, from left) Jacob Simmons, Jamie Holcomb, Austin Seabaugh, and Brittnany Bedford, and (back) Brian McGowan.   Three Rivers College is based in Poplar Bluff, but has centers in Dexter as well as Malden, Kennett, Sikeston and Cape Girardeau. Three Rivers opened the facility in Dexter in January 2011.  The college enrolls more than 4,300 students and offers traditional face-to-face classes, ITV classes, and online opportunities. Community colleges community colleges serve almost half of the undergraduate students in the United States, providing open access to postsecondary education. Dexter FFA Chapter Elects Officers

Leading The FFA Way


The Dexter FFA Chapter recently selected new chapter officers for 2012-2013 school year.  The election was held during officer interviews on Tuesday, April 10. A Dexter senior officer and a panel of former FFA officers interviewed the officer candidates. The candidates first had to fill out an application, which set down all the requirements for being an officer in the Dexter FFA chapter. Each candidate was interviewed separately by a panel that included Alex Neldon, this year's Dexter FFA President as well as Joe Pulliam, who is a surveyor for Smith and Company. Mallory Crow, who is employed with Delta Growers, and Matt Blevins an agriculture education student at Southeast Missouri State University. Next year's Dexter FFA officers will be (front row, from left) Brianna Madigan, Reporter; Chelsey Massey, President; Christin Sitzes, Vice-President: and (back row, from left) Colton Averett, Parliamentarian; Jackson Hubbard, Sentinel; and Derek Felker, Treasurer. Concert To Salute SEMO's Miller

CAPE GIRARDEAU  – Cantus Choralis, Southeast Missouri State University’s Chamber Choir, will pay tribune to the late Dr. Gary Miller, former director of the Earl and Margie Holland School of Visual and Performing Arts, in a concert at 7 p.m. April 12 in the Robert F. and Gertrude L. Shuck Music Recital Hall  in Southeast’s River Campus.

Steven Hendricks, who directs the Cantus Choralis, urges concert goers to note the event has been moved up 30 minutes from the originally published start time.

The Cantus Choralis will perform “In Memoriam,” a piece composed by Robert Fruehwald, Southeast professor of music, to honor Miller. The Cantus Choralis also will perform music from the Renaissance by John Wilbye and Elway Bevin, along with contemporary pieces.

Guest artists will include the Southeast Missouri Music Academy’s Suzuki Strings directed by Hays Hendricks, soprano Mary Mims and harpsichordist Sarah Hoffmeister.

“This concert will have something for everyone -- including a surprise or two,” said Hendricks, who also serves as music education coordinator and associate professor of music at Southeast.”
