“Center Stage” Revives Melodrama, Vaudeville, in “Egad, What a Cad”

Poplar Bluff, Missouri - Center Stage, Three Rivers College’s theater company, will bring the madcap magic of old-fashion melodramas to the Tinnin Fine Arts Center with its production of “Egad, What a Cad” on Sept. 27 and 28 at 7 p.m., with a matinee showing on Sept. 29 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $10, or $5 with a valid Three Rivers student ID. Tickets are available at the Poplar Bluff Chamber of Commerce, the Financial Services office at Three Rivers’ Poplar Bluff Campus, online at trcc.edu/tinnin, or at the door.

“Egad” chronicles the gripping tale of Constance Hope, a beautiful young heroine haunted by a tragic past, and stalked by a black-hearted villain named Bertram Oleander. Saved in the nick of time by hero Manly Rash, the two must team up to foil Oleander’s dastardly plan once and for all. The second half of the production is a vaudeville show created and directed by Center Stage director Robert Cook, featuring classics of comedy like Abbott and Costello’s famous “Who’s on First” routine.

“I think audiences are going to have a lot of fun with ‘Egad,’ because this type of theater is quite rare these days, and I don’t think it ever has been done in Poplar Bluff.,” said Cook, who is also an instructor of theater at Three Rivers. “Melodrama plays are intentionally over-the-top, and one of the only kinds of theatre where the audience actually participates in the show, booing the villain and cheering for the heroes.”

Center Stage is a blended theater company that brings together students, college employees, and community members to produce live theater. It provides both local entertainment and hands-on experience for Three Rivers students interested in dramatic arts. The group plans to produce the award winning musical “Godspell” for its next show in Spring 2014. For more information on Center Stage and how to participate, or to purchase tickets for “Egad, What a Cad”, call Robert Cook at 573-840-9648.

Three Rivers College is committed to contributing to the quality of life in Southeast Missouri with quality, affordable higher education opportunities and community services that support and encourage the economic, civic, and cultural vitality of the region.
