Poplar Bluff, Missouri - Registration is now open for schools wanting to participate in the Fifth Annual Southeast Missouri Regional Spelling Bee, to be held on March 8, 2014, at Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff.
Participating schools must complete their registration by October 15 and complete a school-wide spelling bee before Feb. 7, 2014, to participate. The top three contestants from each qualifying school will be eligible to participate in the regional spelling bee in Poplar Bluff, with the winner receiving an expenses-paid trip to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
“Three Rivers is proud to be able to host this event for Southeast Missouri, and we’ve had some incredible spellers show up to compete,” said Mark Sanders, Instructor of English at Three Rivers and coordinator for the Regional Spelling Bee. “So far we’ve had winners from Advance, Poplar Bluff, and Cape Girardeau, and I’m looking forward to seeing more of our local spellers this year.”
All public, private, parochial, and home schools within the spelling bee’s 17-county region are welcome to participate. Participating counties are: Bollinger, Butler, Cape Girardeau, Carter, Crawford, Iron, Madison, Mississippi, New Madrid, Perry, Reynolds, Ripley, Scott, St. Francois, Ste. Genevieve, Stoddard, and Wayne counties.

Poplar Bluff, Missouri - September 19, 2013, Congressman Jason Smith announced the Department of Labor is awarding Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff with a $2.75 million grant for the development and expansion of innovative training programs. The grants are part of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training Grant Program, which promote skills development and employment opportunities in fields such as advanced manufacturing, transportation and health care, as well as science, technology, engineering and math careers through partnerships between training providers and local employers. Smith wrote a letter to the Labor Department to in favor of Three Rivers’ grant application.
“Three Rivers is a tremendous institution and I am honored to have helped them receive these vital federal funds. This grant will benefit the entire region for generations by giving families in the area the opportunity to train for highly skilled jobs,” said Smith. “I look forward to working with President Stevenson to see these funds make an impact on student at Three Rivers and on our local economy.”
Three Rivers College President Dr. Devin Stephenson thanked Smith for helping the college receive the federal grant.
“This grant opens up a wealth of opportunities, not only for Three Rivers, but for local residents and manufacturers,” said Stephenson. “Manufacturing plays an enormous part in keeping Southeast Missouri’s economy strong. With the new funding, we will provide in-depth training in the skills that local employers desperately require.”
“We’re particularly proud of the precision ag programs that we will offer under this grant,” said Stephenson. “We will have the first publicly available program of this kind in the region, and the only one that focuses on the entire breadth of precision agriculture technology. Three Rivers College appreciates the strong support from Congressman Smith and other members of the delegation for their strong support of our college and our mission to improve the quality of life for. The AXA Achievementsm Scholarship in association with U.S. News & World Report provides $670,000 in annual scholarships to young people throughout the nation.
The application deadline is December 15, 2013, but if 10,000 applications are received before that date, the program will automatically close.
Winners on the State and National levels
State Winners- Fifty-two winners – one from each state, the District of Colombia and Puerto Rico – are selected by our nonprofit partner, Scholarship America, to receive one-time scholarship awards of $10,000 each.
National Winners- From the pool of 52 state winners, ten are selected as national winners and earn an additional one-time scholarship of $15,000. This brings the top AXA Achievers total scholarship awards to $25,000 each.
Applicants to the AXA Achievementsm Scholarship in association with U.S. News & World Report must:
-Be United States citizens or legal residents living or claiming residency in one of the 50 U.S. states, District of Columbia or Puerto Rico.
-Be current high school seniors who plan to enroll full-time in an accredited two-year or four-year college or university in the United States for the entire 2014-2015 academic year. Enrollment at an accredited postsecondary institution outside of the United States will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
-Demonstrate ambition and self-drive as evidenced by outstanding achievement in school, community or work-related activities.
-Special consideration will be given to achievements that empower society to better face risk through education and action in areas such as financial, environmental, health and/or emergency preparedness.
-Employees, associates, financial professionals or immediate family members of employees, associates or financial professionals of the AXA Group, U.S. News & World Report, or Scholarship America, or their affiliates, subsidiaries or advertising and promotion agencies are not eligible.

No documents are to be sent to Scholarship America at this time. Applicants selected for further consideration will be notified to submit high school transcripts and an applicant appraisal confirming the outstanding achievement. Do not send any materials until invited to do so.

Account Control Technology Foundation has established a scholarship program to assist current post-secondary undergraduate students who will be second-year students this upcoming academic year. Scholarships are offered each year for full-time study at an accredited four-year college or university of the student’s choice.
This scholarship program is administered by Scholarship Management Services, a division of Scholarship America Scholarship Management Services is the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarship and tuition reimbursement programs for corporations, foundations, associations and individuals.
Eligibility Rules
Applicants to the ACT Second Year Scholarship Program must –
-Demonstrate financial need.
-Be current postsecondary undergraduate students.
-Be enrolled as second-year students in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited four-year college or university for the entire 2013-14 academic year.
Awards
-If selected as a recipient, the student will receive a $1,000 award.
-Up to twenty five (25) awards will be granted each year.
-Awards are for undergraduate study only
Application Information
Interested students must complete the application and mail it along with a current, complete transcript of grades to Scholarship Management Services postmarked no later than October 15.
Grade reports are not acceptable. Online transcripts must display student name, school name, grade and credit hours earned for each course, and term in which each course was taken.
Applicants will receive acknowledgment of receipt of their application.
If an acknowledgment card is not received within three weeks, applicants may call Scholarship Management Services to verify that the application has been received.
Final Selections
Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic record, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience, statement of goals and aspirations, unusual personal or family circumstances, and an outside appraisal.
Financial need as calculated by Scholarship Management Services must be demonstrated for the student to receive an award. Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship Management Services.
Applicants will be notified in late November. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients.

The "Hit The Books" Scholarship is available to students between the ages of 18 and 25. To be eligible for this scholarship, you must submit a maximum 500-word essay on the importance of education in your life and how the scholarship money will assist you in achieving your goals.
Bonus points will be awarded to students who find a creative way to include their passion for coffee within their essay without losing sight of the primary topic.
