R.W. Conner

R W "Dub" Conner, son of the late Eugene Wilson and Buena Oceola Conner, was born in Louisville, Kentucky on April 15, 1923, and passed away at the Golden Living Center in Dexter on March 9, 2013, at the age of 89 years, 10 months and 22 days.

He had lived in Essex and Dexter all his life. He had worked for the Railroad, had spent ten years as a police officer in Kentucky and had his own saw sharpening business. He attended the Harvest Assembly of God Church in Essex. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army and a member of the D.A.V.

In September 1984, he was married to Ruth Marie Vickery in Essex. She preceded him in death on June 19, 2009.

Surviving are two daughters, Sandra Williamson and Linda Morgan both of Dexter, Missouri; six grandchildren, Arlyn, Kevin, Crystal, Timbo, Ashley & Keaton; ten great grandchildren, Marissa, Larissa, Madison, Colton, Jayden, Andrew, Austin, Jeanel, Brienna & Cora; one brother and one sister. Other relatives and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by one son, Terry Patterson; four brothers and one sister.

Visitation will be Monday, March 11, 2013, after 11:00 a.m. at the Watkins and Sons Funeral Home in Dexter, Missouri.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 11, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. at the Watkins and Sons Funeral Home in Dexter, Missouri.

Interment will be in the Missouri Veteran's Cemetery in Bloomfield, Missouri with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of arrangements.  Rev. James Hoyt of Poplar Bluff, Missouri will be officiating.

Donald Lee Baker, son of the late Roland T. and Helen Marie Winnegar Baker, was born on August 24, 1931, and passed away at the Crowley Ridge Care Center in Dexter on March 7, 2013, at the age of 81 years, 6 months and 11 days.

He had lived in Bernie most of his life. He had worked at IXL Handle in Bernie for many years and attended the Corner Gospel Fellowship Church in Bernie.

On November 28, 1953, he was married to Ruth Helen Lane in Hernando, Mississippi.

Surviving are two sons, David Baker and Ronald Baker both of Bernie; one daughter, Leslie Sandage of Dexter; 11 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; four brothers, LaVaughn Baker of Van Buren, Missouri; Jerry Baker and Gary Baker both of Dexter, Wayne Baker of Bernie; two sisters, Barb Watkins of Dexter, Joann Ray of Cape Girardeau. Other relatives and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Charlene Frederick, Shirley Miller, and Alowese Massey.

Visitation will be Friday, March 8, 2013, from 5:00  to 8:00 p.m. at the Watkins and Sons Funeral Home in Dexter, Missouri.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 9, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at the Watkins and Sons Funeral Home in Dexter, Missouri with Rev. Tim Russell of Dexter, Missouri officiating.

Interment will be in the Bernie Cemetery in Bernie, Missouri with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of arrangements.

Kristie Jany, daughter of Velma Kay Miller Sontag, was born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri on October 19, 1971, and passed away at her home in Marble Hill, Missouri on March 6, 2013, at the age of 41 years.

She had grown up and lived in Dexter before moving to Marble Hill. She had was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are her mother Velma Kay Sontag of Marble Hill; one son, Brad Jany of Sikeston; one daughter, Tasha Jones of Sikeston; three brothers, Randy Jany of New Jersey, Michael and Jason Sontag both of Marble Hill, one sister, Diane Cluck of Marble Hill. Other family and friends also survive.

Visitation will be held on Friday March 8, 2013, after 12:00 p.m. at the Watkins and Sons Funeral Home in Dexter, Missouri.

Funeral services will be held on Friday March 8, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at the Watkins and Sons Chapel in Dexter, Missouri with Pastor Everett Owens of Dexter, Missouri officiating.

Interment will follow in the Dexter Cemetery in Dexter with Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of arrangements.

Carolyn Lorene Murphy

Carolyn Lorene Murphy, daughter of the late Albert Andrew Moore and Thelma Belle Haggard Moore, was born on May 9, 1941, in Clarkton, Missouri, and passed away on March 4, 2013, at Cypress Point Skilled Nursing in Dexter at the age of 72 years.

Mrs. Murphy was a resident of Bernie, Missouri, and the owner/ operator of Otasco in Bernie.

On July 6, 1961, she was united in marriage to Calvin Noel “Butch” Murphy in Dexter, Missouri.  Mr. Murphy preceded her in death on March 11, 2012.

She is survived by one son, Noel Redden Murphy, of Crestview, Florida; one daughter, Lori Annette Friese, of Jackson, Missouri; by three brothers, Walden G. Moore of Hillsboro, Missouri, Wayne H. Moore of North Vernon, Indiana, and Kenneth Moore of Columbiaville, Michigan;  by one sister, Denna Sherlyn Fetters of Farmington, Missouri; and by six grandchildren, Ashley Murphy, Mecca Murphy, Caleb Murphy, Brent Stidham, Bailey Friese and Spencer Friese.

Besides her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Velva Sherlene Stidham; grandson, Jason Stidham (Velva's son); by four brothers, Mitchell Moore, Paul A. Moore, Richard Joseph Moore and Jimmie Dale Moore; and by one sister, Glenda Alvena Vaughn.

Friends may call at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Bernie, Missouri, on Thursday, March 7, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. 

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday at 10:00 a.m., March 8, 2013, in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel in Bernie with the Rev. Ivan Mekan officiating.

The family has requested, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Jason Stidham FFA Memorial Scholarship c/o the Dexter School.

John Doyle Whitaker, son of the late William and Helen Myers Whitaker, was born on July 17, 1961, in Malden and passed away at his home in Bloomfield on March 1, 2013, at the age of 51 years.


John had lived in Bernie and Bloomfield most of his life. He had attended the Bible Tabernacle in Bloomfield. He had worked as a deck hand on a river boat and had his own tree service. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army.


In September of 1996,he married Jinnifer Doerschlen in Aquilla, Missouri.


Surviving are his wife, Jinnifer Whitaker of Bloomfield; three sons, Jack Whitaker, Sam Whitaker and Dustin Greer all of Bloomfield; two daughters, MacKenzie Roberts and Rebecca Davis both of Bloomfield; three grandchildren, Lauran Davis & Nate Davis both of Charleston and Lennon Fuqua of Bloomfield; two brothers and eight sisters. Other relatives and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Sara Reynolds.


Friends may visit on Sunday March 3, 2013, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield.


Funeral services will be held on Monday March 4, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Bro. David Wilson of Bloomfield officiating.


Interment will be in the Walker Cemetery in Bloomfield, Missouri with Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in charge of all arrangements.
