Be Aware of Fraudulent Debit Cards in Area

Submitted Story

Recently, Officer Blagg of the Caruthersville Police Department has informed everyone that there is a group of men that hit some Hayti businesses last night. It is said that the males have strong foreign accents, and they are using fraudulent prepaid debit cards to make purchases of electronics and computer equipment at places such as: Walmart, Best Buy, etc. In addition to using them to make purchases, they are going door to door trying to sell these cards to people who are unaware of this crime.

You may want to alert your business customers and keep an eye on the ATMS in case they try to use the cards at one of them. They are wanted in several states, and Hayti has been their most recent target. You are asked to please alert authorities if they are spotted!

Girl Scouts and 2013's World Thinking Day
January 28th 2013 by Beth Farrah
Girl Scouts and 2013's World Thinking Day

Every year, Girl Scout Troops from all over the United States participate in World Thinking Day, where they will learn about culture from other countries and will support positive, life-changing fundraisers that will help young women and children in those countries. Over ten million Girl Scouts and their group leaders participate in this activity all over the world. This day full of activities has been going on since 1926, which makes it a must for most troops in our nation. World Thinking Day was created by WAGGGS (World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts) and has spread from five countries to one hundred and forty-five over the past century.

World Thinking Day is a chance for Girl Scouts of all ages and locations to learn about the importance of friendship, help people from other countries by raising money with multiple fundraisers, participate in educational games and activities, join together with other troops for an overall cause, and get the chance to earn the World Thinking Day Badge.

Along with all of the fun activities and meaningful lessons that they will learn on February 22nd, it is also an important day for fundraising for all Girl Scout Troops. The fundraising in late February has been part of the Girl Scouts’ tradition since 1932. The money that was raised by the fundraisers and donations will be sent to places all across the globe, where the girls and young women will receive educational resources and small grants for needed projects in their area.

Every year, the World Thinking Day has a different theme that is based off of things that are affecting young girls in our world today. Some of the themes from the previous years are world hunger and poverty, HIV and AIDS, and environmental sustainability.

This year is a little different because unlike the others, 2013 was given a double theme or a “twin” theme. Maternal Health and Child Morality are the official themes for 2013. Luckily, the two themes go hand-in-hand perfectly. It’s obvious that healthy babies come from healthy mothers and the lives of both parents and children are tightly knit together. WAGGGS has created many fundraiser ideas for the Girl Scouts willing to participate so that many lives of both babies and mothers will be saved and changed by the money donated to their region.

Although it may seem rare or uncommon, having a large number of unhealthy children is a growing problem around the world, including the United States. We may hear about many children in foreign countries that have died before the age of five and nearly 90% of those deaths that take place are babies under one year old while 60% of them are newborns.

Most deaths in small children are not caused by the lack of medicines, health services, or doctors. They are actually caused because women in certain areas do not have safe pregnancies or births, allowing the risk of death to be higher for both the mother and the child. This is why WAGGGS has decided to donate to help reduce child morality with the theme of “Together, we can save lives”.

There are solutions available to help save these lives, and that’s what the Girl Scouts plan to do with donations. The children and young people of today’s world may not know it, but they are the biggest generation that the world has ever seen and make up nearly half of the population. Girl Scouts and Girl Guides want to inspire other kids and leaders to help with this year’s World Thinking Day to have another great turn out and to help change lives of both children and families through small fundraisers and activities that will take place worldwide on February 22nd

Ten Pins For Ben Bowling Fundraiser For St. Jude

Dexter, Missouri – Start getting your 5 person bowling team together and join Ten Pins for Ben this Saturday, February 2, 2013 at the Dexter Bowl on Two Mile Road.

You will have an awesome time supporting a great fundraiser.  This event is sponsored by the Ben Kruse 18 FORE Life organization.

Scott and Keri Kruse of Dexter along with a host of friends created 18 FORE Life and this year they plan to pass the one million dollar mark in love offerings to area cancer patients.  “We never could have dreamed this up,” says Scott.  He and his wife spend numerous hours with volunteers throughout the area coordinating the efforts of this wonderful charity.

About six years ago they were trying to decide what type of fundraiser they could start during the cold, winter months and the Ten Pins for Ben was established.

The funds raised during the event have been distributed to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a true place of miracles.  In the first four years of the Ten Pins for Life Fundraiser, they were able to send over $26,000 to St. Jude.

“The idea of the 18 FORE Life came from a simple idea among a bunch of high school buddies,” noted Kruse. “We never dreamed that is would evolve into giving away a million dollars in love offerings,” he continued. “I cannot say enough about this community and how they have continued to help others in their time of need.  It just takes seeing a smile on a cancer survivor’s face to know that it have all been worthwhile.”

Addie and Andie know all too well about helping folks and about St. Jude.  They are the daughters of Scott and Kerri and when Andie was about three years old she became seriously ill.  Her doctor urged her parents to take her to St. Jude in Memphis.  She was a patient for only a short time; however the experience left quite an impression on her and her family.

Andie saw a lot of children struggling to survive and kids who had lost most or all of their hair, some had to deal with shots and needles and chemo treatments, and the folks at St. Jude were so kind and helpful.

Andie and Addie want everyone to come out and bowl.  “It feels good doing something like this,” explained Andie.

The Kid’s Bowling begins at 10 a.m. and they can bowl until 1:30 p.m.  At 2:00 p.m. the Bowling Session begins and will run until 4:30 p.m.  No skill required! So there is not one excuse to not come out and have a good time for a great cause.

To reserve a spot, call Scott Kruse at 573-624-8751 or email your reservations to s10k102002@yahoo.com.

Let's help 18 FORE Life hit that million dollar mark!

They explain there are changes to the Medicare Summary Notice and Medicare cards and they want to visit the person's home to give them information and materials.  They try to obtain personal information to commit financial fraud.

Please be aware!  Medicare officials do not call beneficiaries to discuss changes to the program nor do they visit their homes.
