Poplar Bluff, MO - Four Poplar Bluff High School choral students have been selected for the All-State Choir, one of whom has further qualified to compete statewide in the Sight-Singing Bee.
Bralin Duckett, a tenor, and soprano Emma Harris will perform with the choir in January during the Missouri Music Educators Association conference at Osage Beach, while Christian Redding, a tenor, and alto Emma Tinsley will serve as alternates.
In addition, Emma Harris achieved one of the highest sight-singing scores in the state, allowing her to vie in the Missouri Choral Directors Association-sponsored Sight-Singing Bee at the same event.
Out of nine PBHS juniors and seniors who tried out for All-State, nearly half advanced during the All-District Choir rehearsal in November in Cape Girardeau. Emma Harris went on to display her “high level of musicianship” and “well-developed ear” in a subsequent sight-singing audition, according to Joshua Allen, director of vocal music.
"Sight-singing is reading and singing a musical passage at first sight," Allen explained. "Students have 20 seconds to prepare from the time they first see the piece."

A new scholarship has been endowed with the Three Rivers Endowment Trust.
Keith and Kathy Bess Holloway of Cape Girardeau created the Almeda Holloway Memorial Scholarship in memory of Keith Holloway’s mother. Holloway was a board member of the Endowment Trust from 2011-2021.
“My mother was instrumental in the formation and establishment of Three Rivers College beginning in 1964 when the college was just a dream,” Holloway said. Both of his parents were involved in promoting the vote for the college, which became a reality on April 5, 1966, that established the four-county Three Rivers Junior College District.
Proceeds from the scholarship will be used to award an ambassador scholarship to a female student annually. TRC ambassadors are selected through an interview process and based on leadership, service, character, and academic achievement. They perform service hours each semester.
Raised in Sedalia, Almeda Holloway graduated from Smith Cotton High School in 1947. The following year, she met and married James A. “Bud” Holloway and moved to Poplar Bluff, where they founded Holloway Real Estate and Insurance Company. She managed the business and was a licensed insurance and real estate broker.
“She was a pioneer as a working mother and business owner and raised four children,” said Keith Holloway. His siblings are Bruce, Gary, and Donna. “She was also active in the AMVETS Auxiliary, youth sports, and PTA. An avid bowler for many years, Almeda was well known for driving youth athletes to games and cheering them on.”
After the insurance company sold in 1972, Holloway moved to Indiana, where she was also active as a real estate and insurance broker. She later returned to Poplar Bluff and died in 1990.
“We are honored that Keith and Kathy are honoring Mrs. Holloway through this endowed scholarship,” said Michelle Reynolds, director of development at Three Rivers College. “This will continue to impact students in Southeast Missouri for perpetuity.”

Three Rivers College can boast of having two of the top college bull riders in the nation with Cole Skender and Holden Moss delivering outstanding performances at the College National Finals Rodeo held in Casper, Wyoming. The TRC Raider Rodeo Team finished 13th in the Team National Standings.
Skender ended the 2020-21 season as Reserve National Champion. At the CNFR, he won Go Round 1 and placed 2nd in the Championship Round. Moss tied for first in Go Round 2 and finished 4th in the nation.
“Words can’t explain how proud I am of these guys plus all the guys and girls who stuck out the whole year last year with all the trials we went through,” said Chad Phipps, head coach of the TRC Raider Rodeo team. “I am happy to say both Cole and Holden will be back next year to get their degrees and finish out their college with us at Three Rivers.”
Contestants compete all year in the 11 regions of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association for a chance to rope or ride at the CNFR. Three Rivers competes in the Ozark Region and will host a college rodeo Oct. 14-16 at the Art Saunders Arena at the Sikeston Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo grounds.
