In Memory of Marilyn Jiles

Marilyn Jiles, daughter of the late James William Rankins and Juanita O’Neal Rankins, was born on December 28, 1948, in Sikeston, Missouri, and departed this life on June 2, 2024, at Winchester Nursing in Bernie, Missouri at the age of 75 years.


Mrs. Jiles was a former cashier at Wal-Mart in Sikeston, Missouri. She was a member of Gray Ridge General Baptist Church and a resident of Gray Ridge, Missouri. She enjoyed playing the piano.


She is survived by her son, Keith Jiles of New Madrid, Missouri; by two nephews, Clinton Corlew and wife Jamie of Essex, Missouri, and Jeff Corlew of Essex, Missouri; by her niece, Cristi Comfort and husband Jason of Dexter, Missouri; and by five great-nieces and one great-nephew.


Other than by her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Carolyn Corlew.


Graveside services will be held at New Essex Cemetery on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at 2:00 p.m.


Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter is assisting with arrangements.

In Memory of Floyd Eugene “Gene” Gaines

Floyd Eugene “Gene” Gaines, son of the late Floyd Eugene Gaines and Gladys Clark Wilburn, was born November 1, 1939, in Dexter, Missouri and departed this life June 2, 2024, at his home in Dexter at the age of 84 years.


Mr. Gaines worked for Coffey and Camp Lumberyard before working as a salesman for Busy Bee Lumber in Dexter, Missouri. He was a member of The United States National Guard, he attended the Lighthouse Christian Church in Dexter, and he was a former member of the Dexter Elks Lodge. He enjoyed spending time with his family, walking at the park and doing yardwork.


On April 17, 1987, in Dexter, Missouri, he was united in marriage to Susan Hatfield. Mrs. Gaines survives of their home in Dexter.


Along with his wife he is survived by four daughters, Gina (Robert) Slavings of Rogersville, Missouri, Shelly (Jim) Trout of Puxico, Missouri, Kristina Edwards of Dexter, Missouri and Trina Edwards of Dexter, Missouri; by his son, Robbie (Hanna) Edwards of Sikeston, Missouri; by his brother, Marlin Gaines of Sikeston, Missouri; by his sister, Pat Wills of Festus, Missouri; by five grandchildren, Stephanie (Allen) Farmer, Joshua (Zona) Gaines, Logan (Mikayla) Gaines, Jayden Edwards and Cameron Edwards; and by four great-grandchildren, Chloe Farmer, Sheldon Farmer, Kaydee Farmer and Isabella Farmer.


Other than by his parents he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Maura Peters; by his great-grandson, Bryson Umfleet; and by his sister, Wanda Carwile.


Visitation will be held Wednesday June 5, 2024, at the Lighthouse Christian Church in Dexter, Missouri from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Funeral services will then be conducted Wednesday June 5, 2024, at the Lighthouse Christian Church at 1:00 p.m. with Rev Tim Russell officiating. Interment will follow at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield, Missouri.

In Memory of David Scott Williams

David Scott Williams, son of the late Earl C. and Doris Bland Williams was born on December 3, 1958 in Dexter, Missouri and departed this life on June 1, 2024 at the Crowley Ridge Care Center in Dexter, Missouri at the age of 65.


David was a lifelong resident of Dexter and was the Vice President of Williams and Son Appliance Service. David found great joy being able to work side by side with his father. David attended Risen Church in Dexter and Crossroads Global Methodist Church in Dexter. To hear David say a prayer was a testimony to his strong faith and love of Christ. He had a child-like faith and trust in his savior.

He is survived by his two big brothers, Dale and wife Cissy Williams of Oran, Missouri and Wayne Williams of Dexter, Missouri; by his nephews, Austin and Travis Williams; by his niece, Melissa Keller; by his great-nephews, Jackson and Rhyder Williams; by his great-niece, Ruby Keller; and a host of extended family and friends.


Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 4, 2024 rom 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter, Missouri.


Funeral services will then be conducted on Tuesday, June 4, 2024 at 12:00 p.m. in the Mathis Funeral Chapel with Rev. Travis Lambert officiating. Interment will follow in the Dexter Cemetery.

In Memory of Roger Lee Smith

Roger Lee Smith passed away May 31, 2024, at his home in Bernie. He was 71.


Born February 11, 1953, in Elgin Illinois, he was the son of Wanda Stephens Smith and the late Wendell Smith.


On June 21, 1974, in Bernie, he was married to Edna Hickson. They had one son, Jared Lee Smith.


Roger was employed by the City of Bernie as a state-certified water/wastewater operator. He also worked many years as an announcer at the Sikeston Drag Strip. After retirement in 2015, Roger was employed by Bud Shell Ford in Dexter.


Roger was a member of First Baptist Church in Bernie.


Survivors include his mother, Wanda Smith, of Bernie; Wife, Edna Smith, of Bernie; one son, Jared Smith, and daughter-in-law, Lonnia Smith, of Jackson; and a sister, Kathi Masters, and husband Clifford Masters, of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Also by other relatives and many friends.


He was preceded in death by his father, Wendell Smith.


A Celebration of life for Roger will be held at First Baptist Church in Bernie, Missouri on Saturday, June 15, 2024 with Service starting at 1:00 P.M. followed by a time of sharing until 3:00 P.M. Mathis Funeral Home of Bernie is assisting with arrangements.

In Memory of Marian Gillespie

Marian Gillespie, daughter of the late James McCurdie and Edith Cole McCurdie, was born on April 27, 1937, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and departed this life on May 29, 2024, at Cypress Point Skilled Nursing in Dexter, Missouri, at the age of 87 years.


Mrs. Gillespie was a former co-owner of Dwight’s Ace Hardware in Bloomfield, Missouri for 21 years. She attended St. Joe General Baptist Church in Idalia, Missouri. She enjoyed watching stock car racing and St. Louis Cardinals Baseball, and she loved spending time with her granddaughters.


On February 27, 1954, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, she was united in marriage to Dwight Gillespie. Mr. Gillespie preceded her in death on September 5, 2018.


She is survived by her son, Ron Gillespie and wife Cindy of Bloomfield, Missouri; by her daughter, Pam Wheeler of Dexter, Missouri; by two sisters, Shirley Materi and Beverly Weaver of Portage, Michigan; by her sister-in-law, Bev Boynton of Portage, Michigan; by two granddaughters, Holly Davis and husband Darin, and Melissa Rhine and husband Luke; and by five great-grandchildren, Kyleigh Davis, Carter Davis, Bailey Stevens, Parker Rhine, and Jaxx Rhine.


Other than by her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth McCurdie, and Jimmy McCurdie; and by her sister, Rosemary Musgrove.


Graveside services will be held at Leora Cemetery in Puxico on Sunday, June 2, 2024, at 10:30 a.m.
