Sparklight Honors Military Veterans with Hiring Initiative

Sparklight Honors Military Veterans with Hiring Initiative

Sparklight’s commitment to giving back to the communities it serves and its “Stronger Together” philosophy have made the internet service provider a great fit for former military personnel making a transition to civilian life. In honor of Military Appreciation Month, the internet service provider has increased its efforts to recruit veterans into its growing workforce.

Long-time Technical Operations Manager in Norfolk, Nebraska and 18-year Army veteran John Hanzlik served both reserve and active duty service throughout his career with Sparklight and said during this time the company was supportive and very accommodating to him and his family.

“Sparklight has offered me the ability to provide for my family since my early twenties,” Hanzlik said. “It has helped show my children how to work hard while serving my country and my community. They watched how Sparklight supported not only myself but my family through the years during and after my service in the U.S. Army. I would recommend working for Sparklight to fellow veterans, as the company will support and encourage your progress and desire to grow in your career.”

Dennis Sasser served in the U.S. Army for 22 years as a multi-channel communications equipment operator working on installations and troubleshooting, a skill which he continues to use as a System Technician in Pascagoula, Mississippi.

Shane McNaughton, an Advance Technician in Sioux City, Iowa, served eight years in the Iowa Army National Guard as an E4 specialist before joining Sparklight 24 years ago.

“My military training has helped me with adaptability, determination, discipline, organization, structure, and working as a member of a team to accomplish our goals - all of which has helped me succeed here at Sparklight,” McNaughton said. “Sparklight is a great company to work for. We have awesome comradery and the company just has outstanding people to work with.”

Sparklight and its associated brands have made a concerted effort to increase veteran hiring by partnering with Veteran Readiness & Employment and Wounded Warrior Project, as well as participating in Hire Heroes virtual career fairs for veterans and their family members. The company also offers referral incentives to associates, which are increased for veteran referrals during the month of May in honor of Military Appreciation Month.

“We are grateful for the enormous contributions and sacrifices our veteran associates have made through their military service and value the diverse, meaningful paths they engage in at Sparklight,” said Peter Witty, Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary who served as an officer and helicopter pilot in the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) during Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm. “Because of them, we’re stronger together in our mission of connecting our customers and communities to what matters most.”

Sparklight currently has more than 170 open positions throughout the markets it serves. Learn more and apply at https://www.sparklight.com/about/careers.

100-Mile Yard Sale Kicks off this Week; Drivers Urged to Use Caution

100-Mile Yard Sale kicks off this week; drivers urged to use caution

Visitors and residents will be out in full force along Route 25 Memorial Day weekend in search of bargains at the 100-Mile Yard Sale, but MoDOT wants you to remember the greatest savings of the event could be a life.

“It’s a fun weekend that people look forward to each year,” says Traffic Engineer Craig Compas, “but we want people to remember that there’s more traffic and more congestion along Route 25 this weekend than any other and drivers need to keep that in mind.”

MoDOT will do its part to bring the safety message to the forefront.  Message boards will be in place along the route to alert drivers of the unusual traffic patterns and promote safe driving.

“We really want drivers to be alert—to be aware of their surroundings, to be aware of sudden stops and to look for pedestrian traffic,” Compas says.  “Additionally, there is an increase in traffic, including large truck traffic, between the City of Jackson and the Route AB in Cape Girardeau County due to the Diverging Diamond Interchange construction. While we want everyone to enjoy themselves, we ask that people also be as safe as possible.”

For more information, contact Compas at (573) 472-5310 or call MoDOT’s Customer Service Center toll-free at 1-888-ASK-MODOT (1-888-275-6636).
