In Memory of Anna Lee Denson

Anna Lee Denson, daughter of the late Harvey Knotts and Mary Hopkins Knotts, was born on July 14, 1918 in Campbell, Missouri, and departed this life on August 25, 2020 at Crowley Ridge Care Center in Dexter, Missouri, at the age of 102 years.

Mrs. Denson and her husband owned and operated Denson Lumber Company in Parma, Missouri, for over 30 years.  She was a member of the Dexter Church of Christ and a resident of Dexter.

She was united in marriage to Oscar D. Denson on December 31, 1936 in Kennett, Missouri.  Mr. Denson preceded her in death on February 28, 2002.

She is survived by five generations, including her son Jimmy Denson and wife Barbara of Wappapello, Missouri; her daughter, Dawna Carter and husband Landall of Dexter, Missouri; her sister, Dixie Lowe of Kansas City, Missouri; five grandchildren, Kyle Carter, Summer Dunkin, Dale Denson, Shelley Hollis, and Jimmy Joe Denson; and by fourteen great-grandchildren, many great-great grandchildren, many great-great-great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Other than by her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers Ivan Knotts, Everett Knotts, Herbert Knotts, and Andrew Knotts; by her sister, Oletta Lowe; and by her grandson, Brian Denson. 

Private funeral services will be conducted at Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter with Kyle Carter officiating.  Interment will follow in the Malden Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Children’s Homes Inc., 5515 Walcott Road, Paragould, Arkansas 72450-3319.

In Memory of Teresa Zanette Dudley

Teresa Zanette Dudley, 63, of Dexter, Missouri, passed away Monday, August 17, 2020 at Evelyn’s House in St. Louis, Missouri.  She was born on January 23, 1957, in St. Louis, Missouri, to the late GH Parsons and Bonnie (Craft) Parsons.

Survivors include three daughters: Melissa (Justin) Pace of Camas, Washington, Lauren (Clinton) Curtis of Jonesboro, Arkansas, and Jamie Dudley of Dexter, Missouri; six grandchildren: Jacob Ferguson, Jillian Johnson, Ethan Pace, Gabriel Johnson, Troy Pace, and Anneliese Johnson all of Camas, Washington; and one grandchild on the way.

Teresa is preceded in death by her parents, her maternal grandparents, Reben and Zana Craft, and her paternal grandparents, James and Minnie Parsons.

Cremation has been accorded and a private graveside service will be held at Sadler Chapel Cemetery in Dexter, Missouri, at a later date.

Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter is in charge of arrangements.

In Memory of Linda Sue Calvert

Linda Sue Calvert, 71, of East Cape, formerly of Cairo, passed away at 3:20 AM on Friday, August 21, 2020 at her home.

Linda was born in Cairo on August 31, 1948 to John Whitehead and Patsy Dodd Whitehead. She married Edwin Calvert on December 23, 1966.

She worked as a cook at Witz’s Restaurant in East Cape. She loved to play bingo, work in the yard with her flowers, and fish with Ed.

She is survived by her husband, Edwin Calvert; son, Timothy Calvert; daughters, Kimberly Rains and Jennifer Schmitt; four grandchildren, Cora, Shelby, Kaci, and Charlie; four great grandchildren, Corbin, Luke, Eli, and Parker; two great great grandchildren, Gracelyn Mae and Willa Grace; two sisters, Sharon Williams and Pam Boyd, and one brother, Tom Williams.

Linda was preceded in death by a son, Terry Calvert; her mother, Patsy Williams; father, John Whitehead; and a brother, Curtis Whitehead.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm on Saturday, August 22, 2020 at Crain Funeral Home in Cairo.

Funeral services will begin at 3:00 pm on Saturday at the funeral home with Rev. Larry Potts officiating. Interment will follow at Green Lawn Memorial Gardens.

In Memory of Sammy Sturgess

Sammy Sturgess son of the late Murray Lee Sturges and Jessie Mullins Sturges was born on August 22, 1932 in Dover, Arkansas and departed this life on August 17, 2020 at his residence in Dexter at the age of 87.

Mr. Sturgess was a Veteran of the United States Air Force and a member of the Dexter Church of Christ.  While he held different jobs throughout his life, he was a country boy at heart and was always farming in some way.  He worked at Standard Oil and Bootheel Petroleum, he passed the realtor’s test and became a licensed real estate agent.  Sammy retired from Arvin at the age of 75.  Sammy cherished the relationships he developed in the Air Force and while at Arvin, developing bonds that would last a life-time.  In 1987 he and Sue started Trinkets & Treasures in Dexter.

On October 11, 1957 he was united in marriage to Sue White in Dexter, Missouri.  Mrs. Sturgess preceded him in death on April 23, 2015.

He is survived by one son, Doug Sturgess and wife Kathy of Sikeston, Missouri; by three daughters, Deborah Sturgess of Dexter, Missouri, Dana Frazier and husband Mark of Stuarts Draft, Virginia, and Dr. Susan Lucktong and husband Dr. Ek of Mooresville, North Carolina; six grandchildren, Hannah Oxenford and husband Leland, Haley Knicely and husband Taylor, Sammy Lucktong, Savannah Lucktong, Jennifer Scism and Michael Scism; and by four great-grandchildren, Connor, Ivy, Harrison and Lily.

Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Danny Sturgess; by one brother, Rollan Sturges and by two sisters, Christine Demaree and Helen Jackson.

A private funeral service will be conducted and will include full military honors.

In Memory of Viola Brown

Viola Brown, daughter of the late Hadley Brockmire and LaVern Robert Brockmire was born on August 7, 1932 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri and departed this life on August 14, 2020 at the Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau at the age of 88.

Viola was a strong, independent woman, who loved taking care of her family.  Besides taking care of her family, she loved her cats and grandpuppies, and loved and cared for them like her own.  She was a member of the Dexter Elks Lodge #2439.  She was a member and proud supporter of Ducks Unlimited.

On July 11, 1952 she was united in marriage to Willard Brown in Cape Girardeau.  Mr. Brown preceded her in death on January 28, 1997.

She is survived by one son, Steve Brown and wife Tonya of Dexter, Missouri; by three daughters, Janet Baker and husband David of Dexter, Missouri, Susan Cutler and husband Mark of St. Charles, Missouri and Patty Ahlert and her husband Dan of Nashville, Tennessee; by five grandchildren, David L. Baker, Zac Cutler, Miles Brown, Alexis Ahlert and Abby Smith;  by one great-grandchild, Marley Cutler and by four sisters, Elva Alsobrook of Vancouver, Washington, Lori Page of Sequim, Washington, Bobby Rickman and Judi Hindman both of Dexter, Missouri.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, all of Viola’s services will be private.  Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter will accept floral arrangements and expressions of sympathy for the family.
