Local Cancer Survivors and Caregivers to be Honored at
American Cancer Society Relay For Life

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Stoddard County, set to begin at 4:00 pm, May 4th through 12:01 am, at East City Park in Dexter, is a celebration of cancer survivorship and a fun way to raise the vital funds needed to help find a cure for cancer. The event will celebrate the lives of so many local residents who have survived cancer, while offering the hope of finding a cure.

Anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer and their caregivers are encouraged to join the celebration. “The Opening Ceremony will begin at 6:00 pm with a survivors’ lap where cancer survivors and their caregivers will take a victory lap around the track. The involvement of local cancer survivors is proof of the progress that has been made in improving cancer survival rates and the quality of life following cancer treatment,” said Belinda Worley, Relay For Life Event Lead. A candlelight ceremony also takes place to honor cancer survivors and remember those who lost the fight against this disease. The candle lighting will begin Friday night at approximately 10:30 pm, luminaria bags for the ceremony can be purchased at the event.

Relay For Life of Stoddard County is a community event where teams and individuals come together to honor, celebrate, and raise funds and awareness in an effort to free the world from the pain and suffering of cancer. Money raised will help the American Cancer Society provide free information and support for people facing the disease today, and fund cancer research that will help protect future generations.

This year, We are Attacking Cancer.  A full agenda of entertainment is planned, including music, team fundraising activities, fun theme laps and contests all night long. Relay For Life is a handicapped-accessible event.

Relay For Life of Stoddard County would also like to invite all survivors to join us as we celebrate life at our annual Cancer Survivors Dinner.  The dinner honoring local survivors will be held on Monday, April 30th at the Bloomfield Assembly of God in Bloomfield, MO.

Doors will open at 5:30 pm and dinner will be served at 6:00 pm.

Survivors and a guest are invited to join us for dinner, entertainment, and door prizes.

Former Dexter Resident Re-Certified as Professional Community and Economic Developer (PCED)
Former Dexter resident re-certified as a Professional Community and Economic Developer (PCED)

Brian Thompson, president and chief executive officer of Lebanon Regional Economic Development, Inc. (Lebanon-REDI), was recently re-certified as a Professional Community and Economic Developer (PCED) by the Community Development Council (CDC).

Thompson is a former Dexter resident, graduating from Dexter High School in 1999 prior to successful completion of his associate degree from Three Rivers Community College in Poplar Bluff and a bachelor of science from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, Ark. in 2001.

Founded in 1995, the CDC is a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to establish professional standards through certification and training that will be recognized as valuable to both the community development practitioner and those who employ their services.

To earn PCED designation, community and economic development professionals must first complete three years of the Community Development Institute (CDI) at one of six regional locations. Upon finishing CDI, an economic and community development professional may take the PCED test.

Exam content is based on the Community Development Handbook which provides comprehensive, current, and applicable information for community development practitioners. Testing includes questions to measure both the understanding of content and the ability to apply the appropriate methods and tools to specific community situations.

Thompson completed his CDI years from 2009-11 at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, Ark., before successfully taking the PCED certification test in August 2011. He earned re-certification in 2015 and again earlier this month.

Re-certification may be achieved through professional education, contributions to the profession, service, and participation in community development meetings and programs.
