Poplar Bluff, Missouri - “All means all” was the theme of Poplar Bluff R-I Superintendent Scott Dill’s state-of-the-school address at the annual convocation on Monday, Aug. 14, at the Black River Coliseum.

The statement served to affirm the district’s mission – Achieving excellence through learning: Every child, every hour, every day.

Having the entire staff together – nearly 800 employees, Dill took the opportunity to announce this year’s focus with major construction now in the rearview: to strengthen the district’s PLC model, which stands for professional learning community.

“For my money, if there’s a better way to improve performance, I have not found it,” Dill stated, noting that it is the golden era of educational research.

A PLC is defined in school literature as an ongoing process in which educators work collaboratively in recurring cycles of collective inquiry and action research to achieve better results for the students they serve.

Dill and his administrative team participated in a PLC Institute over the summer to brush up on the guiding principles in order to ensure the process is being implemented with fidelity from building to building, in light of routine turnover that has taken place.

The district initially engaged in the process several years ago, instituting Collaboration Day, contractual time built into the academic calendar for teachers to work together interdependently analyzing data and aligning curriculum in order to help individual learners excel.

“I see this as a retooling of what we’re doing really well in a lot of places,” said Dill, reflecting on his first year in Poplar Bluff. “We have to move past talking about my kids and start talking about our kids.”

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education posted last week that this year’s graduation rate for PBHS is 91.8 percent, an increase of 4.2 percent over 2016, and more than 13 percent since 2011. Dill commended the faculty on the substantial strides. Even still he pointed out there are about 8 percent of students not walking across the stage.

“The stakes are high, ladies and gentlemen,” Dill concluded upon sharing some eye-opening statistics about the negative effects of an incomplete education.  

Prior to the address, faith partners united to deliver a prayer, the JROTC presented the colors and vendors raffled off prizes. Each principal introduced their new staff members. The convocation serves as a pep rally for employees as they enter a new school year.

Welding Classes to be Offered in Dexter by Three Rivers College
Dexter, Missouri - Three Rivers College has announced that it will begin offering welding classes at its Three Rivers – Dexter location, starting in the college’s upcoming Fall semester. Three Rivers will offer two one-year certificates for welding, as well as an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Engineering Technology with a focus on welding.

“Our welding programs offer an efficient and affordable gateway into a high-demand career,” said Dr. Dan Lauder, Chair of the Career Studies and Workforce Development department at Three Rivers. “In as little as a year, a student in these programs can be ready for well-paying welding jobs anywhere in the nation.”

Students in Three Rivers’ welding programs in Dexter can obtain a one-year certificate in Manufacturing Welding or Maintenance Welding in a year, or an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Engineering Technology -- Welding Option in two years. In addition to the welding programs, Three Rivers – Dexter also offers a one-year Green Diesel certificate, focusing on diesel engine mechanics.

“Students will gain valuable in-demand skills pursuing a certificate in either the Welding or Green Diesel programs,” said Lauder. “Employers frequently hire students from our Green Diesel program before they even complete the program.”

Fall classes at Three Rivers, including the Welding program, begin August 14, with a registration deadline of Friday, August 11. Prospective students can visit trcc.edu or call 573-270-9605 for more information on all of Three Rivers’ programs of study. To apply for admission to Three Rivers, visit trcc.edu/admissions. Prospective students must possess a high school diploma or high school equivalency credential.

Three Rivers To Hold Enrollment Event During 5K Fundraiser

Dexter, Missouri - Three Rivers College will hold a Fall On-the-Spot Enrollment Rush event in conjunction with the Raider Run, Walk & Wag 5K Run/Walk fundraiser on Saturday, July 8, in the East Park in Dexter.

The Enrollment Rush will allow prospective Three Rivers students to apply for admission and financial aid on the spot. Staff from Three Rivers – Dexter will be on hand to answer any questions attendees might have about the programs available at Three Rivers.

“A lot of people don’t realize how many classes and programs are available at Three Rivers – Dexter,” said Joe Kenley, Director of Three Rivers – Dexter. “We want to show how easy it is to start building your future, right here in Dexter.”

Registration is currently open for Fall 2017 classes at all of Three Rivers’ locations across Southeast Missouri.
