MaKayla is the daughter of Bob and Kim Waldner of Dexter, Missouri.

A total of 41 Mississippi State student-athletes were named to the 2016-17 First-Year Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll, the league office announced Wednesday.

The 41 Bulldogs span 11 sports (baseball, women's basketball, women's cross country, football, men's golf, women's golf, women's soccer, softball, men's track and field, women's track and field and volleyball) and are part of a total 902 student-athletes named to the list across the 14 SEC schools.

Soccer led the way, placing an MSU-best seven on the list, with men's and women's track and field both not far behind with six. Women's cross country earned five spots, followed by baseball with four and both football and softball with three representatives.

The SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2016-17 academic calendar.

Each student-athlete must 1) have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution; 2) be on scholarship or a letter winner; 3) have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial credit at the nominating institution; and 4) have been a member of the varsity team for the sport's entire NCAA Championship segment.
