Bloomfield, Missouri - The Dexter Bearcats varsity boys basketball team clawed their way to another win over the Bloomfield Wildcats in a packed gym on Tuesday evening.
Just two weeks after the Bearcats tendered Bloomfield’s first loss of their 2015-2016 season Dexter beat them 48-31 in a very competitive spirited game between the two towns.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 8-2 lead in the first four minutes of the game. Dexter rallied back to a 11-10 lead at the end of the quarter. It was a battle throughout the second quarter as well. The Bearcats maintained a lead until the Wildcats fought back on a ten point run ending the half with a 20-18 lead.
“Our kids showed a lot of resiliency in the face of adversity,” stated Dexter boys basketball coach Josh Dowdy. “Not just one of them, but all of them. What a team effort!”
Ethan Flowers recorded a game-high 17 points for the Bearcats. He tallied two treys. Jacob Pedigo hit two 3-pointers on his way to a 12-point finish. Ryan Mayo hit a 3-pointer contributing 9 points for Dexter.
“Ethan Flowers showed that he is way more than a 3-point shooter. Jacob Pedigo was everywhere and found his jumper again tonight. Tyler Heil provided the intangibles that you will never find in a scorebook. He continues to gain confidence each game. Gabe Jackson cleaned up the glass tonight!” Dowdy said of his key players.
“Ryan Mayo got the nod due to Jason Jarrell being sidelined and showed that he can be a real contributor on our team,” continued Dowdy. “He hit a big three and grabbed several rebounds.”
The third period proved to be a battle of defense with neither team scoring in the double digits. Bloomfield recorded 6 and Dexter had 8 points during the third quarter.
Bloomfield never scored after Petyon Bell hit a bucket with just under 4 minutes left in the game. Dexter recorded the final 11 points of regulation to secure their win.
“Just a tough night for us putting the ball in the hole, and we give Dexter a lot of credit for that,” stated Bloomfield head boys basketball coach Jason Karnes. “They had some kids step up and make some big shots for them late that let them pull away.”
Noah Vandiver tallied a team-high 11 points including one trey. Nathan Newell recorded 10 points including two 3-pointers.
“Every game is a chance to learn, and hopefully we can take a few things from this game that will help us down the road,” continued Karnes.
Bloomfield will be back on the court on Friday, January 15th at Malden. Game time 6 p.m.
“More than anything all of these kids reached down and grabbed a little extra tonight to pull of this victory,” Dowdy said of his athletes.
Dexter will be back in action on Friday evening when they take on the Bernie Mules at home, another great Stoddard County rivalry. Game time 6:00 p.m.
