Elnore Adams

Elnora Adams, daughter of the late Roy and Ofie Johnson of Canalou, Missouri, was born July 26, 1932 at New Madrid, Missouri and passed away on March 11, 2015 at the Methodist Hospital in Germantown, Tennessee at the age of 82. 

Mrs. Adams was a member of the Ellendale Baptist Church in  Bartlett, Tennessee, and a former resident of Dexter.  She loved spending time with her family, cooking/baking, sewing, quilting, fishing and reading.

She is survived by her daughters, Gala Bonner, Cordova, Tennessee; Kimberley Wiggins, Bartlett, Tennessee; Julie Maness, Asheboro, North Carolina; one brother, Gale Johnson, Canalou, Missouri; two stepsons, Ronald Cook, Lee Summit, Missouri and Dennis Cook, Antioch, Tennessee; seven grandchildren, thirteen step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and her dog, “Sweetie”.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Paul Cook and Hugh Adams; two sons, Michael Cooksey and Tim Cooksey; stepson, Ted Cook; sister, Faye Farmer; brothers, Kenneth Johnson, Gay Johnson, Jerry Johnson; and grandson, Bradley Wiggins.

Visitation will be held at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 21, 2015 with funeral services to follow in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel at 2:00 p.m. 

Burial to follow in Sikeston Memorial Park Garden of Memories in Sikeston, Missouri.

Memorials in Mrs. Adams' memory may be made to the Ellendale Baptist Church, 3861 Broadway Road, Bartlett, Tennessee 38315  (please note Annie Armstrong on check memo) or The American Heart Association, 3816 Paysphere Circle, Chicago, Illinois 60674.

Deward Deke Philpott
Deward "Deke" Philpott, son of the late John and Emily Davis Philpott, was born in Bloomington, Indiana on October 21, 1944, and passed away at his home in Aquilla, Missouri on March 17, 2015, at the age of 70 years, 4 months and 24 days.

He had lived in the Southeast Missouri area most of his life. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army and enjoyed fishing, hunting and making knives. He was a retired carpenter.

Surviving are two sons, John Raymond Philpott and Deward Eugene Philpott, Jr. both of Indiana; three daughters, Stacy Philpott of Jackson, Missouri, Stardust Watson of Terre Haute, Indiana, Melissa England of Bloomfield, Missouri; eleven grandchildren and one great grandson; one brother, Jerry Philpott of Kingman, Arizona; two sisters, Donna Alberson of Florida and Vickie Nunn of Farmington, Missouri. Many other relatives and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Danny Philpott, and one sister, Shirley Ashley.

Friends may call on Friday, March 20, 2015, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter.

Services will be held on Friday, March 20, 2015, at 1:00 pm at the Watkins & Sons Chapel in Dexter.

Interment will be in the Missouri Veteran's Cemetery in Bloomfield, Missouri with full military honors, Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter, Missouri in charge of arrangements.

George Henry Harkness
George Henry Harkness, son of the late Connie Clarence "C.C." and Ather B. Williams Harkness, was born in Pontotoc, Mississippi on December 4, 1930, and passed away at the John J. Pershing V. A. Medical Center in Poplar Bluff, Missouri on March 15, 2015, at the age of 84 years, 3 months and 11 days.

He had lived in Dexter since 1970 and was a disabled veteran of the U. S. Army serving during the Korean Conflict.

He was married to Betty Jean Roy and she preceded him in death.

Surviving are two sons, Roy Wayne Harkness of Ripley, Tennessee, Danny Harkness of Des Arc, Missouri; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; one sister, Doris Thomas of Dexter, Missouri. Many other relatives and friends also survive.

He was preceded in death by one son, George Daniel Harkness, three brothers, Clarence, Lamar and Lewis Harkness and one sister, Beatrice Holland.

Friends may call on Wednesday, March 18, 2015, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter.

Services will be held on Thursday, March 19, 2015, at 2:00 pm at the Watkins & Sons Chapel in Dexter in Dexter.



Interment will be in the Hagy Cemetery in Dexter, Missouri with full military honors, Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter, Missouri in charge of arrangements.

Letha Laverne Walker Burleson

Letha Laverne Walker Burleson, daughter of the late John Wade Walker and Della May Helm Walker, was born on December 4, 1921 in Parma, Missouri and departed this life on March 15, 2015 at Golden Living Center in Malden, Missouri at the age of 93.

Mrs. Burleson was a member of the Church of Christ in Bernie and a resident of Dexter.  She was a homemaker and worked along side her husband as a farmer’s wife. 

On June 24, 1938, she was united in marriage to John Paul Burleson in Cape Girardeau.  Mr. Burleson preceded her in death on August 21, 1986.

She is survived by two sons, Jerry Burleson (Janie) of Dexter, Missouri and Joe Burleson (Judy) of Valparaiso, Indiana; by two daughters, Kay Wright (Glynn) of O'Fallon, Missouri and Sue Bunting of Fairfield, Illinois; by nine grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Etta Michaels, Algie Edwards Phillips, Juanita Sanders and Ruby Glenn; and by two brothers, Ezra Walker and Paul Walker.

Friends may call at the Church of Christ in Bernie, Missouri on Wednesday, March 18, 2015 from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 Noon. 

Funeral services will be conducted at the Bernie Church of Christ on Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at 12:00 Noon with Stan Dauck officiating and Wayne Reams being the song leader. 

Interment will follow in the Chalk Bluff Cemetery in Dexter.

Ruby E. Miller

Ruby E. Miller, daughter of the late William Frank Stewart and Alma V. Bollinger Stewart, was born on June 2, 1918 in Stoddard County, Missouri and departed this life at Cypress Point Skilled Nursing Center in Dexter, Missouri, after being a resident for eight years on March 15, 2015 at the age of 96.

Mrs. Miller was a member of the First General Baptist Church in Bloomfield for 42 years.  She had worked at Curley Clothing Company in St. Louis, retiring after 25 years.  She lived in St. Ann, Missouri and moved to Bloomfield 42 years ago after retiring.

On November 28, 1940, she was united in marriage to Roy R. Miller in Stoddard County.  Mr. Miller preceded her in death on July 10, 1988.

She is survived by one brother, Wyman Rudy Stewart of Dexter; by one sister-in-law, Helen Stewart of Sikeston; and by 4 nieces and 4 nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Clellen Stewart and Cloid Stewart; and by two sisters-in-law, Phyllis Stewart and Mary Stewart.

Friends may call at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter on Wednesday, March 18, 2015 from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. 

Funeral services will be conducted in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel on March 18, 2015 at 1:00 P.M. with Rev. Ronnie Stevens officiating. 

Interment will follow in the Dexter Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the First General Baptist Church of Bloomfield, P. O. Box 75, Bloomfield, Missouri 63825 or the First General Baptist Church of Dexter, 27 East Castor Street, Dexter, Missouri 63841.
