Ozark Federal Credit Union Comes to Dexter

Dexter, Missouri – Dexter’s Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting to the city’s latest business - Ozark Federal Credit Union!  They are open weekdays from 8:45 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

The new credit union is located at 1025 Arvin Road and is federally chartered to serve residents of southeast Missouri.  The organization is owned by its members, 9,000+ strong with profits returned to them in the form of higher dividend rates on savings deposits and lower interest rates on loans.  Plus they offer low or no cost fees on services.

Stoddard County Students Invited to Join Rotary Interact

Dexter, Missouri - The Dexter Rotary Club sponsors the Interact Club so that young people Freshman – Seniors in Stoddard County who want to join together to tackle issues in their community that they care most about.

All high school students in Stoddard County schools are encouraged to join, especially freshman and sophomores, who will gain much experience in their high school years.

Through Rotary Interact, you can carry out hands-on service projects, make international connections, develop leadership skills, and have fun while making a difference in the community. 

Each year Interact students carry out two service projects, one that helps your school or community and one that promotes international understanding.

This Sunday, August 24th the Rotary Interact of Stoddard County will meet at the Evangelical Free Church on the N. Outer Road in Dexter at 4:00 p.m.  All high school students in Stoddard County are welcome to join!

Come out and make new friends, develop leadership skills and earn money for projects in the community.  Also students who participate throughout their Junior and Senior year will be eligible for scholarships.  In years past, Interact Students have made Christmas cards for local nursing home residents, helped with the Stoddard County Gospel Mission, held food drives, bake sales, and worked the Rotary Booth at the Stoddard County Fair.

Kenady-Hanks Post 59 to Host Breakfast

Dexter, Missouri -
One of the greatest things about living in a small community is having breakfast with friends and this Saturday is no different.  Come out to the Kenady-Hanks Post 59 building across from Dexter's west park and enjoy a wonderful breakfast prepared by your American Legion!

Volunteers will serve delicious scrambled eggs, bacon, biscuits and gravy, coffee, juice, and milk.  Cost is only $6.00 per person with children 8 and under free.  All proceeds go to help local veterans who need our assistance.

If you have any questions or need tickets early please call 573-718-8756 otherwise drop in, visit, and show your appreciation for the men and women who served our country!

Kenady-Hanks Post 59 is located at 620 W. Oak St. in Dexter.  Our local chapter of the American Legion was charted in 1927.

Bernie, Missouri -
Maebry Jackson is the daughter of Denver and Mindy Jackson and has also been chosen as one of the Bernie Parents as Teachers "Students of the Month" for August 2014.

Maebry loves to play with Barbies and dress-up.  Her favorite television show is Sheriff Callie's Wild West.  She also stays very active trying to keep up with her three older siblings, Chloe, Trey, and Cooper.

While her parents are at work for the Bernie School District, Maebry attends Sunshine School and is in Mrs. Lana's Class.  Denver is a 5th/6th grade teacher and Mindy is the High School Counselor.

Maebry enjoys her PAT visits with Courtney McGarity and loves learning new games and activities with Mrs. Courtney.

History

In 1981, Missouri pioneered the concept of helping parents embrace their important role as their child’s first and best teacher. Today, Parents as Teachers continues to equip early childhood organizations and professionals with information and tools that are relevant—and widely applicable—to today’s parents, families and children.


The Parents as Teachers leadership team and Board of Directors is engaged in a three-year strategic plan, which positions the organization as a valued partner to support the organizations and professionals who serve families and children, especially those most vulnerable.


The concept for Parents as Teachers was developed in the 1970s when Missouri educators noted that children were beginning kindergarten with varying levels of school readiness. Research showed that greater parent involvement is a critical link in the child's development of learning skills, including reading and writing.


Early childhood professionals suggested that a program to provide early detection of developmental delays and health issues, and parent education to help parents understand their role in encouraging their child's development from the beginning could help improve school readiness and parent involvement.

With funding from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and The Danforth Foundation, Parents as Teachers began in 1981 in Missouri as a pilot project for first-time parents of newborns. Recognizing the program's benefits and cost effectiveness, the Missouri legislature provided state funding in 1985 to implement Parents as Teachers programs in all Missouri school districts. Since 1985, Parents as Teachers has expanded to all 50 states and six other countries.

Bernie, Missouri - Nathan Chaney Kester has been recognized as one of the Bernie Parents as Teachers "Students of the Month" for August 2014.

Nathan is the three-year-old son of James and Becky Kester.  He will also be celebrating a birthday this month!

He enjoys swimming, riding his bike, cutting and pasting projects, painting, and plying with dough.  Nathan gets excited about finding new tomatoes in his garden and he likes to win games.

His mom, Becky enjoys PAT because she says it has given her new ideas for learning games as well as various other resources to help map his development.
