Stoddard County, Missouri - The American Red Cross has two Blood Drives schedule for next week in Stoddard County.
The American Red Cross encourages eligible blood donors to make and keep donation appointments to maintain the summer blood supply and help prevent a shortage. Donors of all blood types are currently needed, especially those with type O negative, B negative and A negative.
While the need for blood remains constant during the summer, donations drop. Between June and August, on average, two fewer donors give blood at each Red Cross blood drive than what hospitals need. This seasonal decline could be overcome if just two additional donors – above what is expected – give blood at each Red Cross blood drive this summer.
Every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood. Recently, a patient needed 79 blood products after injuries sustained during a car accident. Thanks to blood donors who gave in the days and weeks prior, blood products were readily available for this patient and thousands of others at approximately 2,700 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country supported by the Red Cross.

A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Dexter, Missouri – Addie Medley is about to turn nine years old on August 13th, however her wisdom and generosity is that of an adult far beyond her years.
She decided to cut her hair after years of growing and even learning to French braid her own hair at the age of eight. She thought of all the people who needed wigs because of cancer or childhood accidents or even those who have alopecia and knew that she could make a difference.
Addie’s family is so proud of her decision and with a snip of the scissors over 10 inches of hair was donated to Locks of Love.
“I am very proud of her as hard as it was tow watch them cut it, I know that’s what she wanted,” stated Kelly Medley, Addie’s mom. “She learned to French braid and Fishtail braid her hair last year and was always fixing her hair in some cute style, so that was the hard part knowing she wouldn’t be able to do that for a while. I know it will grow back out, but so thankful that she can do this.”
Addie will have a new look when she enters 3rd grade at Dexter’s Central Elementary School in just a few weeks. She has always been an overachiever and when her hair grows long enough she may just donate more to Locks of Love.

Dexter, Missouri – The Dexter Chamber of Commerce recently hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony with Renea’s Ironing Service. The business is owned by Renea Deprow and is located at 202 N. Walnut Street, Suit B.
Renea’s offers next day laundering service and ironing services from shirts and pants, to suit jackets, dresses and sweaters.
They also offer pick-up and delivery services.
The business is open Monday – Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Bernie, Missouri - Paisley Renea Owens has also been named a Bernie Parents as Teachers July Student of the Month.
She is the nine-month-old daughter of Chad and Sara Owens and has two bottom teeth, blue eyes, and brown hair.
Her favorite show is Mickey Mouse, her favorite foods are Lil' Crunchies and ice cream, and her favorite toys include an alphabet activity cube and her Herman doll from the Mr. Peabody movie.
Paisley can crawl, pull up, eat some big food, and take a few steps. She also enjoys bath time and like all little ones, she likes to get into stuff and climb, including the dishwasher. Now if her parents can only get her to load the dishwasher.
She loves spending time with her Mommy, Daddy, Nana, Papa, Grandma, and Grandpa. Paisley’s favorite part of each visit is seeing Mrs. Paige and playing with her mirror. Her mom's favorite part of participating in PAT is that Mrs. Paige helps her become Paisley's first and best teacher.

History
In 1981, Missouri pioneered the concept of helping parents embrace their important role as their child’s first and best teacher. Today, Parents as Teachers continues to equip early childhood organizations and professionals with information and tools that are relevant—and widely applicable—to today’s parents, families and children.
The Parents as Teachers leadership team and Board of Directors is engaged in a three-year strategic plan, which positions the organization as a valued partner to support the organizations and professionals who serve families and children, especially those most vulnerable.
The concept for Parents as Teachers was developed in the 1970s when Missouri educators noted that children were beginning kindergarten with varying levels of school readiness. Research showed that greater parent involvement is a critical link in the child's development of learning skills, including reading and writing.
Early childhood professionals suggested that a program to provide early detection of developmental delays and health issues, and parent education to help parents understand their role in encouraging their child's development from the beginning could help improve school readiness and parent involvement.
With funding from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and The Danforth Foundation, Parents as Teachers began in 1981 in Missouri as a pilot project for first-time parents of newborns. Recognizing the program's benefits and cost effectiveness, the Missouri legislature provided state funding in 1985 to implement Parents as Teachers programs in all Missouri school districts. Since 1985, Parents as Teachers has expanded to all 50 states and six other countries.
