Bloomfield, Missouri – The Bloomfield High School’s FBLA, FCCLA, Beta Club and Student Council hosted their first Chasing the Rainbow Color Run.  It was a fun morning and there were 25 registered runners!

Everyone had a great time and helped raise money for two wonderful organizations:  Sikeston Area Human Society and 18FORE Life.  The charity event was able to raise $440 with $220 being donated to each group.

The Bloomfield High School clubs hope to make this an annual event and hopefully will be even bigger next year.  A huge thank you to the Stoddard County Farm Bureau for their generous donation and also a special thanks to BA Promotions for the water.

Three Rivers Launces New Degree Program

Poplar Bluff, Missouri - Three Rivers College has announced the launch of a new program designed to make it easier for non-traditional students to quickly and affordably obtain an associate degree. The “Evening Advantage” program will allow participants to complete an associate degree in General Education with just two nights of classes per week for two years.

“While we already offer several degree options in the evening, traditional evening classes face challenges like class availability, constantly shifting schedules, and more,” said Dr. Mary Lou Brown, Dean of Academic Instruction at Three Rivers. “With Evening Advantage, students are assured the availability of their classes, a consistent schedule, and a cohort of classmates to share the journey with.”

According to Brown, Evening Advantage accomplishes its accelerated schedule by having dedicated Evening Advantage-only classes that are taken in eight-week blocks. The classes are set up so that students are considered “full time” students and so can qualify for full Federal financial aid.

“One of the biggest challenges for non-traditional students going back to school is working around full-time work and family schedules,” said Dr. Brenda Russell, Dean of Career and Workforce Development at Three Rivers. “That’s one of the reasons that we’ve ensured that Evening Advantage students will only ever have classes on Monday and Thursday nights—they can block off those two nights in their schedules, and they still get their weekends.”

The associate degree earned through Evening Advantage will transfer seamlessly into a bachelor’s degree completion program, including those offered at the Three Rivers campus. Three Rivers also has articulation agreements with Missouri State University, Southeast Missouri State University, Mizzou, and Arkansas State University which allow seamless transfer to those institutions.

To qualify for Evening Advantage, new students must have applied to Three Rivers, and test into ENG 111 College Writing and Math 163 College Algebra through the ACT or COMPASS placement exam. Current students must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher and a recommendation from faculty or community member. Those interested in Evening Advantage who don’t initially qualify can talk to an advisor about classes that prepare students for college level work.

For more information on Evening Advantage, call 573-772-7104 or send an email to eveningadvantage@trcc.edu. An application form for Evening Advantage can be found alongside Three Rivers’ free admission application at trcc.edu/admissions. Registration is also still open for traditional Fall classes at all of Three Rivers’ locations. For more information on how to register for classes, call 573-840-9605.

Three Rivers College is committed to contributing to the quality of life in Southeast Missouri with quality, affordable higher education opportunities and community services that support and encourage the economic, civic, and cultural vitality of the region. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!

Dexter, Missouri -
Mrs. Putnam's summer school class is having a blast learning!  "Chicka chicka Boom Boom - all the letters of the alphabet meet at the coconut tree!!!

The lower-case letters climb up a coconut tree in alphabetical order, until the tree bends so much that the letters fall out of the tree. Capital letters (the older relatives of the letters climbing the tree) come to help them. Again alphabetically, it describes each letter's injury, including:

  • "D" having skinned-knee
  • "E" having a stubbed toe
  • "F" becoming patched up
  • "G" all out of breath
  • "H" and "I" getting tangled together
  • "L" being knotted like a tie
  • "M" being looped
  • "N" being stooped
  • "O" being twisted; alley-oop
  • "P" having a black eye
  • "T" having a loose tooth

At night, "A" gets up and gets back up the coconut tree, daring the other letters to catch him.

Not only are they learning about the alphabet, but they get to eat delicious treats as well.

Shown in the photo are from left to right: Emma Fortenberry, Caleb Farmer, and Charlene Bess.

Dexter, Missouri – A Special School Board Meeting of the Dexter R-XI Schools was held on Thursday, June 5, 2014.

The Board employed Rebecca Hester as a certified teacher for the 2014-2015 school year.  Her assignment will be elementary keyboarding for grades 2, 3, 4, and 5.  This is an expanded teaching position created to address the computer-based mandatory testing beginning next school year.  (Last year Felicia Powers split her assignment between elementary keyboarding at Southwest Elementary and Curriculum Administration).  This position creates a new learning opportunity for the Central Elementary students.

The Board also employed Jordan McGowan as a paraprofessional aide and as an assistant boys basketball coach for the 2014-2015 school year.  His assignment will be at the high school assisting student instruction.

Jordan joins head boys basketball coach Josh Dowdy and co-assistant coach Kyle Williamson as they provide coaching services for both middle school and high school interscholastic competition.
