Missouri - Congressman Jason Smith announced the opening of the annual Eighth Congressional District Art Contest and invited high school students in Missouri’s Eighth Congressional District to participate in the contest. Contest entrees need to be submitted to one of Smith’s offices by Friday, April 25th.

Each spring, this nationwide high school art competition recognizes and encourages artistic talent. Since the competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated. Students in grades 9-12 can submit original paintings, drawings, collages, mixed media, computer-generated art, and photographs.

A panel of art experts will select a winning work of art to represent Missouri’s Eighth District. The art will be displayed on Capitol Hill for one year. In addition, the winner of the Eighth Congressional District Art Contest will receive free airfare to attend a national recognition reception in Washington D.C. held in June.

“The Congressional Art Contest is a great way to recognize talented high school students in our Eighth Congressional District. In addition to being recognized locally, the winner of the contest will also be invited to Washington D.C. to attend a recognition ceremony and see their art displayed on Capitol Hill,” said Smith. “We hope to have participation from schools across our district. I encourage anyone who is interested in participating in the contest to contact my office.”

Entrees must be submitted to one of Smith’s offices by Friday, April 25th. Artwork can be dropped off at:

Essex, Missouri - Third Quarter is officially over (after being extended an extra week due to the winter weather) and we are moving into Fourth Quarter, which means the Junior High will soon be taking the MAP test and high schoolers will be taking their EOCs.

High School News from Principal Mrs. Cindy Rhodes:

Believe it or not, we are entering the MAP and EOC Zone! It is a little nerve wracking for everyone involved to think that we have missed so many school days and are getting ready to be assessed on things that should have been covered in class when…we haven’t even been in class! The students may begin to feel the pressure as teachers try to make up for lost time and cover as much as they can prior to testing to make sure they are prepared as they possible can be. Seventh and eighth grade will begin testing April 23rd through May 15th. High school will begin taking EOC’s April 6th and will also go through May 15th. More information on testing times, dates, and subjects will be released at a later date. Since we have missed so many days, good attendance is more important now than ever.

Also, a big congratulations is in order for Mrs. Stephanie Monroe for receiving the National Beta Gold Seal Sponsor Award. She receives a pin and will be recognized at National Convention this summer. Also, there are several students who have won recent events and/or elected for an office in an organization. It is quite an impressive list and congratulations to all of them!

Eighth grader Luke Rhodes placed second in the State Junior Beta Social Studies test. He will be competing in Richmond, Virginia in June during the Junior Beta National contest. Eighth grader Joshua Shidler finished fifth in the Wire Sculpture category for Richland at the Beta contest as well.

Congratulations to Richland’s FCCLA chapter! We made quite the impression on our Regional FCCLA chapter after competing for office back in January. Charlie Atchison was elected Regional President, Tristan Montgomery was elected Regional Vice President, and Alexis Accord was elected as Regional Secretary. They were sworn into office in late February.

Essex, Missouri - Today marked the end of the third quarter and students’ report cards will be mailed out next Friday. They will most likely be available on or after March 24th. Elementary report cards will be sent home with each student.

Elementary News from Principal Mrs. Cara Merritt:

Despite the snow, ice, and frigid temperatures, the end of Third Quarter has finally arrived! As we move forward into Fourth Quarter, and hopefully warmer weather, it is important that we bring the same energy and enthusiasm that we brought with us at the beginning of the school year. Fourth Quarter plans to be a busy time here at Richland Elementary. Students and teachers are gearing up for the spring assessments, our volleyball players are preparing for an exciting season, and we are all counting down the days until we can enjoy our new playground in the springtime weather and participate in the end of the year activities.

The elementary student of the month for March is Shelby Mayabb. Shelby is in the fifth grade and is eleven years old and she has displayed excellent acts of kindness towards her classmates and has made very good grades throughout the year! Congratulations to Shelby and all the other contestants!

Kindergarten and Preschool Screening:

Our kindergarten and preschool screening will be held on March 27th. Children residing in our school district that will be five years of age before August 1st, 2014 will be able to enroll in the 2014-2015 Kindergarten Class. Children that will turn three or four years of age before August 1st, 2014 will be eligible for screening and possible placement in our new Preschool Program. Preschool enrollment will be based on age and screening results. Children who turn four years of age before August 1st, 2014 will be enrolled first, and depending on how many openings are available, three year olds will then be considered based on screening results. Students who will be placed in the preschool will be contacted by telephone by the elementary office no later than July 1st. Please call the elementary office if you have any questions and to schedule a screening appointment. We are very excited about this new program and are looking forward to welcoming our young students to Richland!
