Essex, Missouri - The Bernie Mules traveled to Essex Tuesday evening to try and bring their record to 20 wins on the season and they did just that. The Richland Rebels were forced to mark their last home game of the season as a loss against their opponents but the boys on both sides of the court played an overall outstanding game.

"It is nice to reach the 20 win plateau," stated Coach Brad Botsch of Bernie.  "With the schedule we play, 20 wins is certainly an accomplishment.  Our kids are working hard preparing for districts."

David Baker #31 and Sam Turner #45 both shooting for the Bernie Mules were in double digits.  Baker had 24 points with 11 baskets and 2 field goals.  Turner scored 18 points including four 3-pointers.

The first quarter was quite difficult for the Rebels after losing the tip off to Turner, allowing the Mules to score the first of the points. The visiting team pulled ahead and the Rebels slowly fell farther and farther behind.  In the first quarter, the Mules seemed to dominate with baskets.  By the end of the first half, the Bernie Mules were leading 37 to 22, proving to be a major challenge for the home team.

In the second half, the Rebels stepped up their offense a bit, but not enough to overtake the state ranked Mules. The Rebels showed a bit of hope during the third quarter, closing in on the point gap. The home team almost turned things around but lost multiple points due to turnovers and rebounds they weren't able to catch. The Mules showed great defense throughout the game and had energetic players who were standing ready and quick on their feet.

In the end, the home team counted their final home game of the season as a loss and the Mules took their twentieth win of the season, which is an amazing honor for any basketball team. The final score of the night was Bernie with 69 and the Rebels with 52.

Richland Rebels' Richard Forshee #50 was the top scoring player with 20 points for the night, including six field goals from Bernie fouls. Skyler Harper #1 and Nick Daniels #22 were also in double digits with 13 points and 11 points respectively.  The only other player to score for the Rebels was Marcus Grayson #23 who had 8 points in the second half.

The Rebels gave it their all and it was an overall exciting game for the many fans that came out last night for the Tuesday game. The bleachers were filled with both visitors and Rebel fans who were very energetic throughout both games, which was a delight for the boys that got the opportunity to play on the court.

The JV Mules increased their record to 21-2 on the season and are doing quite well.  Ellenburg was the high scorer for the game with 16 points. The  final score for the night was Mules 36, Rebels 24.

Both teams are currently preparing for districts, which will take place within the next couple of weeks, where the basketball season will officially come to an end.

"I like the things we are doing together, and I think we will be ready for districts.  We couldn't have a better game to help prepare for that atmosphere than with Sikeston on Friday night," stated Coach Botsch.  "They can bury you in a hurry and we must compete at an unbelievable level every single possession if we want to stay in the gym with the Bulldogs.  I hope our guys will be ready to compete!"

Catch the Bernie Mules at home on Friday night against state ranked Sikeston Bulldogs.  Game time is 6:00 p.m.  This is a game you won't want to miss!

The Lady Miners vs. The Missouri-St. Louis Tritons

The Lady Miners vs. The Missouri-St. Louis Tritons

Rolla, Missouri - Katelyn Heil, a graduate from Dexter High School, had a great game the other night on the S&T Lady Miners Basketball Team in Rolla, Missouri, where they battled it out against the Missouri-St. Louis Tritons on their home court. Although the team lost to their rival in over time by a mere four points, Heil and her teammates still played a great game of basketball and proved their strength and endurance for a majority of the night to their fans and coaches.

This is the second game that the Lady Miners have lost on their home court in past week but things will hopefully be looking up for the team and players later in the week when they travel to Springfield, Illinois to play their old opponent the Prairie Stars. As the basketball season draws closer to an end, it is believable that the players are getting anxious as they enter into their final games of the year. Things will soon look up for the Lady Miners as they prepare for the Great Valley Conference Tournament that will take place early next month on March 3rd.

In the game against the Tritons, the Lady Miners lost due to multiple turnovers. The Tritons dominated the Lady Miners on their home court by receiving a total of thirty-eight points from the home team due to turnovers, while the Lady Miners only received thirteen points from their opponent.

The game was quick paced and a bit frustrating for both teams due to the turnovers and fouls. For most of the game, the home team held a strong lead but began to slip in the final quarter. In the fourth quarter with only five minutes left on the clock, the Lady Miners were above their competition with a score of 56 to 47. The Lady Miners began to lose track of the ball and the opposing team successfully scored ten straight points not allowing the Lady Miners to score at all and officially pulling ahead of the home team by only one point.

In the final seconds of the game, the Lady Miners purposely fouled an opposing player to buy some time in hope of a rebound. One out of the two shots was made and the Lady Miners got the rebound and was able to tie up the game after another foul and a number of free throws. With only one second left on the clock, the Tritons almost took the win but were called for a double dribble.

When overtime began, the home team quickly took the lead but the lead was reversed minutes later when the Tritons pulled out another five point streak by the making of two free throws and a three pointer. Heil attempted to make a three pointer but the ball circled the rim slowly. With the help of her teammate, the ball nearly went in but the attempt had failed and the Triton’s defense, quickly swooped in to get the rebound.

Heil fouled a Triton player and her team got the rebound but lost the ball in a turnover, which was their main fault earlier in the game that had cost them many points. The Tritons eventually took the win in the end. Heil made a total of five points and helped her team out tremendously during their battle against the Tritons. The Lady Miners will be playing in Springfield, Illinois on Valentine’s Day (Thursday) and will hopefully turn their season around.

The Dexter community is proud to have Heil representing them in Rolla at S&T as she plays her final year of basketball for the Lady Miners team.
