It was Future Farmers of America Week last week, with young men and women in blue jackets and bright orange t-shirts participating in a host of activities throughout the Dexter schools.
But the highlight of the week was most likely Friday, as the grills were fired up and the students opened the ag shop for a special luncheon. The FFA students hosted a special lunch for school faculty and staff and friends, with picnic tables and a buffet table added to the shop.
Thanks to Tyson, the FFA members were able to set a serving table with barbecue chicken breast, hamburgers, hotdogs, and the “world faous” Dexter FFA Potatoes. Parent and master chef Tray Crider and a cooking crew that included Drew Crider, Alex Neldon, Shelby Edwards and Alex Crider worked in windy and cooler temperatures in the garage area off from the shop and fixed the meal. OtherFFA members provided desserts, fixin’, and baked beans.
But the hit of the day were those potatoes, made on the grills. The requests for the spuds keeps the young grillmasters busy throughout the noon meal.
Dexter FFA Potatoes
- Wash potatoes; don’t peal the potatoes and slice thin, slice onion
- Place in aluminum pan or a foil packet
- Add garlic salt, butter (a large pan of spuds will have probably 2 sticks of butter) and Tony Cachere’s seasoned salt
- Cover with foil and place on grill until potatoes are tender.
“When they get done, peel that lid back, sprinkle a little shredded cheese on top of it, close it back up a couple of minutes until that cheese melts and you’re good to go,” said Master Chef Tray Crider
Crider said the spuds will stay on the grill approximately 45 minutes. He added that sometimes bell peppers and mushrooms will find the way into the pan.
“You got to put plenty of butter in the pan with these potatoes,” he added. “You can’t put into too much butter!”

The program encourages young people to explore history and teaches them to understand historical issues, ideas, people and events.
