    Alexis Smith RHF $10,000 Scholarship Winner

    Dexter, Missouri - Alexis Smith, a senior at Dexter High School, is the recipient of the 2015 Regional Healthcare Foundation scholarship.  The $10,000 college scholarship is presented annually to a local student who is pursuing a degree in the medical field. 

    Alexis is the daughter of Gabe and Brooke Smith. Applicants are seniors from Stoddard County High Schools or they are home schooled and must pursue a degree in the health or medical field. Three out-of-county judges review the applications and choose the student. 

    She is the student body President at Dexter Senior High School and is active in the Robotics Club, Rotary Interact, TARS, FLC, Future Business Leaders of America, and Scholar Bowl.  She has also participated in Cross Country all four years of high school.

     

    Smith is also in Dexter Honor Society and Top 10%.  She attended Missouri Girls State last summer and attended Washington University – St. Louis Scholars summer program.  Alexis is a National Merit Semi-Finalist and is in the running to be a finalist.

     

    She is the co-founder of End Poverty in Stoddard County, a non-profit group with a mission to help those in Stoddard County with food, coats, and clothes.


    Alexis has been accepted to Vanderbilt University and her career goal is to be a Pediatric Neurologist.

    “First and foremost, I am a child of God.  I am also thankful to have had the privilege to raise two wonderful sons, Kerry and Kirk Gilbow.  I was also  privileged to watch my grandson Kody grow up in Dexter.  I was able to follow his basketball and karate careers.  He was a national champion in karate in forms, weapons and fighting.  I now have the added privilege of watching Kody’s two boys grow up - my great-grandchildren.“

    “I was in the Dexter Hospital and my doctor recommended home health therapy; therefore, I chose Southeast Home Health Agency.”


    What do you enjoy most about home health therapy?


    “I feel like I have gotten stronger as a result of the home health services.  My therapist motivate me to exercise, and I exercise between therapy sessions so they will see progress at my next visit.”

    “I want to be independent as long as I can in my own home.”

    “My husband (Bob Davis) and I established the Dexter Inn in the mid-1980’s, Prior to this, I was the assistant bookkeeper at Medler-Davis Chevrolet.  At the Dexter Inn, I was the desk clerk and bookkeeper.  I went to a school in Memphis to learn how to operate a hotel and what supplies to buy.  There was a storm in Dexter the first week we were in business and the hotel was unexpectedly full of repairmen.  So, we had quite the initiation into the world of hotel management.“.

    What made you choose our agency to provide your home health care?

    “I first had therapy as an outpatient at the Dexter hospital, and changed to home-health therapy so I didn’t have to leave my home.  On my second round of home-health therapy, I said I would never choose anybody but Southeast Home Health of Dexter for my my care.”

    What do you enjoy most about home health therapy?

    “I have very understanding therapists and nurses and could not have gotten better care anywhere.”

    Please share some of the goals you have for the future and how therapy might help you reach those goals:

    “I want to be as active as I can with my children who live in Dexter, along with my grandchildren and great-grandchildren.”

    "I am 90-years old and still live alone and drive independently.  Last year, I went to Long Beach, CA to visit my brother and Las Vegas to visit my nieces".
