Poplar Bluff, Missouri – T.S. Hill Middle School is Rockin’ the Country with Jr. Beta! That was the Missouri state theme and the Bearcats rocked the coliseum in Poplar Bluff last week!
Seventh grade student Irene Huang of T.S. Hill Middle School in Dexter was elected state president during the Missouri Junior Beta Club Convention at the Black River Coliseum last week.
"Irene is just an amazing student and person," commented T.S. Hill Middle School principal Scott Kruse. "She is going to make Missouri proud as the State Jr. Beta President. Her speech was incredible."
A little history on Huang, she was born in the United States, but lived abroad four years in China with her grandparents. Her parents, Zeng Jia and Xiao Bin “Nancy” Huang are the proud owners of the China Star restaurant for the past eight years.
What does Irene want to do when she grows up, a doctor, but not just a any doctor, but a pediatrician! Way to go Irene and congratulations on your accomplishment.
Fifty-five schools were represented at the convention with approximately 2,500 students present. Huang, age 12, had decided in September to become a candidate for State President and had the support of over 250 Dexter middle school students in her Beta Club. They all donned t-shirts with the words, “Huang is Right!”.
Several categories were available for students to participate in and have a chance to express their talents.
"We had 9 first place winners and that is our best showing yet! This is our third year for Beta," continued Kruse. "The first year we watched and did not participate in the contests. Last year we jumped in and had significant success. This year, we knew what to expect and out students competed hard. As a result, we have over 90 students who qualified and are invited to attend the national convention."
The National Jr. Beta Club Convention will be held in June in Nashville, Tennessee. The students will be fundraising after Christmas to help cover the expenses. There are 16 sponsors led by Nancy Langley. "Nancy is our leader and has done an amazing job organizing, registering, and corresponding with the central office of the Jr. Beta Club. She motivates our students and adults when it comes to Beta!"

With 241 students in our club, we are still the largest in the state.""Beta has something to offer all of our students and also gives them a platform to share and show off their talents. Poplar Bluff, Missouri – These Bloomfield students performed with the Three Rivers Community Band in Poplar Bluff on Tuesday evening.
Shown in the photo are Riley Burns, Allison Statler, John McMichael, Gabe Waters and their high school band director who also performed in the band with them, Ms. Audry Thompson.
Three Rivers College hosts numerous performances at the Tinnin Center Theater. In addition to national touring productions, the theater hosts College/community Theater groups, and the college Music Department’s choir and band groups. Each year, the Three Rivers Music Department hosts workshops for hundreds of area junior high and high school band and choir students. The theater provides a venue for local students to enhance their musical abilities and perform for large audiences.
It is quite an honor to be chosen to perform with these groups. Congratulations on your outstanding performance
