These students volunteer a multitude of hours outside of the normal school times to entertain the public. With their peppy tunes and jazz numbers, the crowd is seemingly pleased to tap their toes or rock side to side to their swing.
Who couldn't resist the tunes, "Sir Duke" by Stevie Wonder or "Zuit Suit Riot" by the Cherry Poppin' Daddies. You can be assured that Mr. Rybolt, DHS Band Director will squeeze in a number by Chicago! "Make Me Smile" will be the number this year.
These kids not only enjoy playing, but many are destined in the future to write music, become music directors or even cross the threshold and enter into the entertainment world. Whatever their careers may become, they will have fond memories of being on stage and bringing smiles to Dexter basketball fans and parents of many students.
If you missed the chance to see them performing at a basketball game at the Dexter Bearcat Event Center, you may catch them at their next performance on February 8th/9th. This will be the 15th Annual Clark Terry/Phi Mu Alpha Jazz Festival - featuring Reggie Thomas on piano. The Jazz Festival is held on the Southeast Missouri State University River Campus in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
Each band will be adjudicated and rated as Superior, Excellent, Good or Fair by experts in the jazz big band field. Trophies will be given to each band and individual citations will be presented for outstanding musicians within each ensemble.
More than 500 students in 24 jazz ensembles from the bi-state region will perform for three jazz experts, receive written and recorded comments, and participate in a live clinic session.
The bands can be heard on Friday, Feb. 8, from 8:25 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 9, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall. Admission is free to this daytime event.
