Dexter, Missouri - It's an honor to make the Dean's List, but it is even a greater achievement to make the Chancellor's List in college.

With  more than 2,100 students being named for the fall 2012 semester at Arkansas State University, Brandon Moore, was grateful he made the prestigious academic list.

It is a great honor to make the Chancellor's List.  A student must earn a grade point average of 3.80 to 4.0 for the semester.  This is Brandon's first semester at ASU.  He recently graduated from Dexter High School in 2012.

Brandon is not only studying music at ASU, but he also composes music.  He wrote a few selections for the Dexter Jazz Cats while attending high school.

Brandon was recently features in the ShowMe Times with his brother, Tim Moore as they perform each Thursday evening in a "Jazz Concert".  He is very active in the ASU Marching Band and Jazz Ensemble.  He recently participated at the half-time show at the GoDaddy.com Bowl onJanuary 6, 2013.  His primary instrument is the saxophone; however he has mastered several different musical instruments.

Brandon is a very talented young musician and we will see more accolades in the very near future.

The Dexter community is proud of you!

Check Out the Dexter Jazz Cats!

Dexter, Missouri -  The Dexter Jazz Cats are well known in the Southeast Missouri area having earned many accolades for their performances.  They keep us entertained at many basketball games and concerts.

These students volunteer a multitude of hours outside of the normal school times to entertain the public.  With their peppy tunes and jazz numbers, the crowd is seemingly pleased to tap their toes or rock side to side to their swing.

Who couldn't resist the tunes, "Sir Duke" by Stevie Wonder or "Zuit Suit Riot" by the Cherry Poppin' Daddies.  You can be assured that Mr. Rybolt, DHS Band Director will squeeze in a number by Chicago!  "Make Me Smile" will be the number this year.

These kids not only enjoy playing, but many are destined in the future to write music, become music directors or even cross the threshold and enter into the entertainment world.  Whatever their careers may become, they will have fond memories of being on stage and bringing smiles to Dexter basketball fans and parents of many students.

If you missed the chance to see them performing at a basketball game at the Dexter Bearcat Event Center, you may catch them at their next performance on February 8th/9th.  This will be the 15th Annual Clark Terry/Phi Mu Alpha Jazz Festival - featuring Reggie Thomas on piano. The Jazz Festival is held on the Southeast Missouri State University River Campus in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

Each band will be adjudicated and rated as Superior, Excellent, Good or Fair by experts in the jazz big band field.  Trophies will be given to each band and individual citations will be presented for outstanding musicians within each ensemble.

More than 500 students in 24 jazz ensembles from the bi-state region will perform for three jazz experts, receive written and recorded comments, and participate in a live clinic session.

The bands can be heard on Friday, Feb. 8, from 8:25 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 9, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall. Admission is free to this daytime event.

Bands attending will represent Cape Central High School, Farmington High School, North County High School, Charleston High School, DeSoto High School, Dexter High School, Woodland High School, Kelly High School, Northwest High School, Hillsboro High School, Fox High School, Seckman High School, Herculaneum High School, as well as junior high bands from Cape Girardeau, Poplar Bluff, Hillsboro and Murphysboro Ill.

For more information and concert tickets, contact the River Campus Box Office at 573-651-2265.  The tickets are $10 each and the concert will be held in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday evening.

The Dexter community appreciates all the hard work these talented students have invested in their musical abilities and wishes them well at the Jazz Festival.

Dexter Greenhouse Prepares for Spring

Written by

Jessica Snider, SMT Writer

Even though the temperatures are below freezing and will continue to be like that for several weeks, the students in Dexter's Agriculture Greenhouse class are planning for the spring season.

On January 24th and 25th, students potted 100 hanging baskets of Geraniums and 50 hanging baskets of Impateins. The rooted cuttings were purchased from a greenhouse supply company and will be cared for by the class for the next few months.

The Greenhouse class members are responsible for the watering, fertilizing, and pruning of the plants as needed.

Around the beginning of May, the plants will be groomed and sold by the Dexter FFA Chapter.

Greenhouse class members Kelsey Frederick and Kaitlin Eaton are shown finishing up potting geraniums and impateins in the Dexter High School Ag Greenhouse.
