DHS Band Students Shine At Contest
Dexter High School instrumental music students continued a record of success recently by bringing home top ratings from the District Music Contest.

Both the DHS Concert Band and the Woodwind Choir received top state ratings of I at the recent State Music Contest for large ensembles. The contest was held on the campus of Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff. The bands are under the direction of Scott Rybolt.

In addition three ensembles and six soloists receive district ratings of I at District Contest for small ensembles and soloists. These students now quality to go on and perform in the Missouri State Music Contest, to be held April 29 and 30 on the campus of the University of Missouri – Columbia.

Soloists receive I ratings include: Shelby Chappell, bassoon; Lauren Dudley, baritone saxophone; Branden Grimm, tympani; Steven Harrellson, tenor saxophone; Shelby Lintz, alto saxophone; and Alex Rybolt, trombone.

Ensembles to receive I ratings include:

• Brass Quintet: Alex Allston, Nathan Elliott. Hannah Hulls. Chuy Lara, and Alex Rybolt.

• Saxophone Quartet: Lauren Dudley, Joseph Greer, Steven Harrellson, and Shelby Linzt.

• Saxophone Trio: Rachel Foster, Steven Harrellson and Brandon Moore.

A Dexter High School senior has been selected to perform at a statewide Future Farmers of America convention.

Lauren Powers, senior at Dexter High School and member of the Dexter FFA Chapter has notified that she has been selected to perform talent during the 83rd Missouri State FFA convention. Thirty individuals and/or groups were selected from the students throughout Missouri who applied to perform their talent during the 2 day convention.

Lauren had to submit anapplication and a video of her performance to the Missouri Association of FFA office at Jefferson City. She will be performing her solo performance at the Thursday evening convention session where it is estimated that their will be approximately 5,000 FFA members and guests present. The convention will be held April 14-15 in Columbia, MO at the Hearnes Multipurpose Building.

Lauren is the daughter of Chuck and Felicia Powers of Dexter. In addition to FFA, Lauren is a member of the DHS Chamber Choir and recently received a I rating for her vocal solo and in two ensembles at District Music Contest.

A Bloomfield high school senior will travel for the second time to the top high school speech competition in the state.

Joseph Northern, senior from Bloomfield High School, placed 2nd in Radio Speaking at the Southeast District MSHSAA Speech competition on March 5, 2011. The competition was held on the campus Southeast Missouri State University.

Joseph will now compete at the state level competition on April 15, 2011 at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Joseph has been a member of the speech team his entire high school career and this will be his second time to compete at the state level.

Ann Bye, Communications Arts instructor, is currently serving as the speech team sponsor at Bloomfield High School.

Future Entrepreneurs: DHS Team Places First

A team of Dexter High School students is champion future entrepreneurs.

Ashley Cogle, Keagen Belcher and Austin Seabaugh placed first in the District 16 Competition of the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). The team competed in Entrepreneurship.

FBLA is the largest and oldest business student organization in the world! A quarter of a million high school and middle school students, college and university students, faculty, educators, administrators, and business professionals have chosen to be members of the premier business education association preparing students for careers in business.

The DHS team will be eligible to compete at the state level in Columbia in April.

The local FBLA Chapter sponsor is DHS business education teacher Ramona Lemons.

A group of students from Richland High School had the opportunity recently to tour the home of one of Missouri’s most famous authors and participate in a statewide meeting.

Six students from Richland's Library Club recently attended the Epsilon Beta State Library Club Meeting in Hannibal. Epsilon Beta is a statewide organization for school library clubs.

The RHS students toured Hannibal-LaGrange University, Mark Twain's Boyhood Home and other historical sites, and participated in several competitions, placing second in quiz bowl.

Team members were Brooke Patterson, James Pollock, Tim Mason, and Makayla Wake.

Pollock, the state secretary, helped run the annual business meeting and then handed over his duties to fellow Rebel Makayla Wake, who was elected to the state office for the upcoming academic year. Other members attending the meeting were Hannah Kean and Kirsten Pruett.
