Players of the Week Against Kennett

Dexter, Missouri -The ShowMe Times is proud to highlight the outstanding performance of two Dexter Bearcat Football Athletes.  Each week the ShowMe Times will choose two players – one offensive player and one defensive player who will be featured as Players of the Week.

Leadership on the athletic field is often a good indicator of the future development of our young students and is a perfect training ground for future leaders.

This week several athletes contributed on the field, and many athletes showed extreme professionalism against their opponent; however only two players were chosen.

The ShowMe Times is pleased to announce the Players of the Week are for Offense - Mr.Ethan Stevens and for Defense - Mr. Gabe Jackson.

Ethan scored the first touchdown of the game against Kennett when he ran in for 9-yard touchdown.  He continued in the second quarter with a pass to Austin Mitchell for a 32-yard touchdown and again at the end of the 2nd quarter with a pass to Austin Chesser for another 32-yard touchdown.

Stevens ran for a 55-yard touchdown in the 3rd quarter and ran for a 77-yard touchdown late in the 4th quarter.

He rushed for 291 yards averaging 8.6 yards per carry.  He passed for a total of 97 yards on 5 completions.

"
Ethan had an amazing game," commented head football coach Justin Peden.  "He wanted to prove to everyone in southeast Missouri that he is an elite player and he did just that!"

Late in the 4th quarter with Bearcat fans on their feet, Gabe Jackson made a fumble recovery that secured the win for Dexter.  Kennett  went for the end-zone on 4th down and 6 on the Cats 19-yard line, but fumbled the ball.  Gabe recovered the ball on the Cats 23-yard line with 1:34 remaining on the clock.

Ethan Stevens with the "quarterback keeper" on the next play ran for a 77-yard touchdown securing the win for the Bearcats.  He ran in for the two point conversion giving Dexter a 10 point lead with 1:33 left on the clock.

"
Gabe did a great job in limited action," stated Peden.  "His fumble recovery was a huge play that sealed the victory for us."

Congratulations to these fine young men on their accomplishments.

The Bearcats will be back in action when they host New Madrid County Central at Homecoming Friday, October 2, 2015.  Game time 7:00 p.m.

Community Tailgate at the Bearcat Event Center begins at 4:00 p.m. and the Queen Coronation will be at 6:30 p.m. at Charles Bland Stadium.

Lady Cats Win District Opener

Dexter, Missouri - The Lady Cats tennis team opened their Class 1, District 1 run with a win over Charleston 5-0 on Monday afternoon.

In doubles action, Macy Urhahn and Lexi May of Dexter defeated Coreyanna Frazier and Cameron Wince 8-0.

Nicole Sells and Rachel Singh beat Charleston’s Nyja Murray and Ashonta Keyerra Whitney 8-0.

Dexter’s Regan Miller and Kalee Howard beat Shantaria Bigham and Savannah Wilkerson 8-2.

In singles action, Lexi May beat Creyanna Frazier 6-0, 6-0 in the #2 singles match.  Nicole Sells defeated Cameron Wince 6-0, 6-0 in the #3 singles match.  The other matches were retired after Dexter secured the needed five points to win.

Monday was also the final home match for Dexter seniors MaKayla Waldner and Kalee Howard.

“MaKayla has grown into a great tennis player from what I have seen since I started coaching three years ago,” commented head tennis coach Kurt Lovelady.  “She has to go against some tough opponents that just make her better.  She has a desire to be able to compete with some of the great athletes she gets to see in the #1 position.”

“Kalee has come a long way since she started her tennis journey her freshman year,” continued Lovelady.  “She has constantly improved from year to year and has been a great help to us on varsity the past two seasons.  She matches well with her teammates in doubles to give whoever she is going against a tough match.”

The Dexter Bearcats improved their record to 9-4 with the victory over the Bluejays.  They play Notre Dame in the District Semifinal on Tuesday, September 29th at 4 p.m.

“Notre Dame has had our number twice already this season,” stated Lovelady.  “They are well coached and play a lot of tennis on their own in the off season.  I believe if we are hitting some good serves, playing smart, and capitalizing on their mistakes we could make today a close match.”
