Special Touch by the Lady 'Cats Tonight

Brosely, Missouri – It started out a stormy evening, but the dedicated Lady ‘Cats basketball team took on the Twin Rivers Lady Royals and easily defeated them 86-31.

It was a special night for one player, Paige Patterson.  She not only has a loving family off the court, but the girls’ basketball team is just as much a part of her family.  They are very supportive of each other and tonight was no different.

Each player wore a purple ribbon woven in their sneaker laces to represent the love they have for Paige’s aunt who is in the hospital fighting cancer.   Michelle Bollinger has been fighting the awful disease for several months and she is super strong, a survivor, a hero, a loving mother and wife.

Whether it is on or off the court these ladies help each other, respect each other and most of all support each other.  They are true heroes and we are extremely proud they represent the Dexter community.

As they took the court tonight, Paige could not help, but think of her aunt.  This game was for her and her teammates helped make the win special!  What a special gesture from a great group of girls! LBB ROCKS!

Six lady Bearcats were in double figures tonight.  Hannah Noe #10 tallied the game-high 24 points shooting 77%.  Erika Cobb #14 scored her jersey number of 14.

MaKayla Waldner #30 and Alison Jarrell #12 each added 11 points.  Jarrell had three treys.

Dakota Reynolds #1 recorded 10 points and Paige Patterson #22 added 10 points.  She was 100% at the charity stripe.

Dexter lead 30-11 at the end of the first and by half-time there was no way for the Lady Royals to catch up.  Half-time score 62-18.

Final Score 86-31

The Lady ‘Cats will be at home on Monday, February 24th when they host the Jackson Lady Indians.  On Tuesday they host the Notre Dame Lady Dogs.  Both games will be spectacular.

Great game tonight and way to go Lady ‘Cats on making this special for Paige and her family.  Prayers to Michelle, Jim, Hannah and Kassidey.

A Record 10 DHS Wrestlers Qualify for State

A Record 10 DHS Wrestlers Qualify for State

Written by
Dee Loflin, SMT Manager/Editor

Dexter, Missouri – This is the first time in the history of Dexter High School that 10 wrestlers qualified for the state finals in Columbia, Missouri.  Dexter also finished second behind Ste. Genevieve in the Class 2, District 1 Tournament which included a total of 14 teams who participated in the District.

“It’s pretty good,” stated Dexter’s wrestling coach James Sneed.  “We are getting better. Ste. Gen is definitely the class of the district.  They beat us last year by 104 points and this year they only beat us by 57 points.  We cut the gap in half and increased the gab we had over other people.  We had a strong tournament.”

Brandon Twomey, Storm Massey, Trevor Waldner, Gaven White, Dylan Bazarian, Ethan Stevens, Jacob Mattison, Micheal Hurst, Jared Deal and Cameron Craft left Dexter on Wednesday with a send-off form T.S. Hill Middle School students.  They lined the front of the building cheering “We Are Bearcats!” as the boys drove by in their rental vans.  As they passed Southwest Elementary, Mrs. Shannon Putnman’s class had a special send-off for the wrestlers and their favorite wrestler, Trevor Waldner, who has been student teacher with their class.  Decorated posters also lined One Mile Road in front of the pond with each student’s name and weight class.

Once they reach Columbia they will have just one evening to mentally prepare for Thursday, Friday and Saturday matches.  “The top four kids out of District 1,2,3, and 4 qualify for state in each weight class,” continued Sneed.  “There is a 16-team bracket for each weight class.  To win the tournament you have to win four straight matches.  If you lose a match you can still finish as high as third.”

There are five returning qualifiers headed to Columbia and five that will get their first bid at the finals.  Trevor Waldner, a senior, Dylan Bazarian, junior, Storm Massey, sophomore, Ethan Stevens, sophomore, and Cameron Craft, junior are all going to leave it all on the mat and hopefully bring home a few medals.

Trevor Waldner, 138 pound weight class has travelled to State for the fourth and final time of his high school career and expectations are quite high.  His current record is 36-3 and is slated to compete against Mexico junior Jadin Taylor in his first match on Thursday.  As for his goal........“I would like to be in the state finals,” commented Waldner.  We sure hope so!  Congratulations and good luck Trevor!

Sophomores, Ethan Stevens and Storm Massey are making their second trip to State.  Ethan 152# weight class placed first at the district level by defeating all three of his opponents.  His record is 29-5 and is matched against Fulton’s Andy Baysinger in the first round.

Storm who is wrestling at 132-pound weight class is slated to wrestle John Heimann of Moberly.  Storm’s record is 22-14.

Dylan Bazarian is making his third trip to state.  He finished second at district in the 160-pound weight class.  He will be wrestling Jacob Boyd in the first round.  His record is 34-4.

Cameron Craft is wrestling in the 285-pound weight class and is slated to wrestle Shawn Beeson in the first round.  Craft stated, “I just want to win my first match.  I hope I can do it.”

For the five who are getting their first chance at a medal may not be seasoned like the other five, but that won’t stop them from giving their all on the mat.  Four sophomores and one junior have asked for guidance and look to their fellow wrestlers for advice on how to win at the state level.

Jason Mattison will be competing in the 195-pound weight class and this will be his first time at State.  “I just want to compete and do my best,” according to Mattison.  “ I am going to try the defensive side and if my opponent makes a mistake I want to capitalize on it.”  He will be competing against undefeated wrestler Makenna Cook in his first match.

In the 220-pound weight class, Jared Deal will be representing Dexter for the first time at State as well.  He finished second at District.  “I was up against this kid from Central that had beat me twice and I pinned him in the third,” Deal commented.  “I knew I had to go in there tough-minded and I beat him!”

He will wrestle Tommy Williams in his first match at State.

Sophomore Gaven White is wrestling in the 120-pound weight class and will face St. Charles senior Reid Hanmore in his first match.  “My first match is against a senior with a great record,” commented White.  “It will be a tough match.”

Brandon Twomey is representing Dexter in the 113-pound weight class and will take on Monett sophomore Sean Jastal in his first match.  “I want to go up there and hopefully win a couple of matches,” Twomey said of his first trip to State.  Twomey finished third at District and his record is 21-14 this season.

In the 182-pound weight class, Michael Hurst will be representing the Bearcats.  This is his first time at State.  He will wrestle Zachery Gorman in his first match.  “We made goal sheets and stuff at the beginning of the season,” stated Hurst.  “This is where we want to be.”

We wish all the Bearcats good luck and will be following their matches throughout the tournament.  The ShowMe Times will post on our Facebook page periodically the results of each match.

GO WRESTLERS AND LEAVE IT ALL ON THE MAT!

Bernie (21-4) will travel to Sikeston to take on the Bulldogs Friday, February 21st.  Game time 6:00 p.m.

"We have a very tough opponent Friday night in Sikeston," Botsch stated. "I want our kids to have two great days of practice and be ready to compete as hard as they can Friday night. With districts right here upon us, we have to leave everything on the floor every time we lace em up. I hope we can go over there and compete well Friday night."
