Bernie, Missouri – It was senior night for the Bernie Mules basketball team and they finished the evening with their best scoring of the season defeating the Richland Rebels 97-21.

The Mules completed the first quarter with 36 points and never looked back as they were in double figures the next three periods.  The Mules’ defensive strategy seemed to work well for them holding the Rebels to just single digits in each of the four quarters.

Six Bernie players were in double figures and they all just happen to be SENIORS!

B.J. Jennings #12, a 6’0” Senior, led the Mules with a game-high 17 points along with one 3-pointer.

Jake Wagner, #5 Senior guard tallied 15 points including one trey.

6’0” Senior guard Troy Kirkpatrick #14 added 10 including his two treys.

6’0” Senior Justin Stanfield #15 scored 11 points and also had two 3-pointers.

Senior forward J.R. Pregel #22 tallied 11 points and hit a 3-pointer.

6’0” Senior Bubby Schwent #24 added 10 points.

Joey Walker #40, a 6’3” Senior battled it out in the paint and scored 8 points.

Matt Vernon #2 a junior and JV player Blake Gilmore each hit one trey.

"I thought our seniors and the rest of the team did a great job tonight," Bernie coach Brad Botsch said. "I think it was good for our psyche to get back on the winning side and gain some confidence back in ourselves."

Bernie (21-4) will travel to Sikeston to take on the Bulldogs Friday, February 21st.  Game time 6:00 p.m.

"We have a very tough opponent Friday night in Sikeston," Botsch stated. "I want our kids to have two great days of practice and be ready to compete as hard as they can Friday night. With districts right here upon us, we have to leave everything on the floor every time we lace em up. I hope we can go over there and compete well Friday night."

Dexter, Missouri - The Poplar Bluff Lady Mules came out strong in the first half and it was a matter of who wanted the win more!  The Lady 'Cats dug their heels in and came back to win 70-48.

Poplar Bluff led the Bearcats at the end of the first quarter by two.

"Coach Chronister always has a great game plan and I thought they did a great job against us tonight," Dexter coach Chad Allen said. "Defensively, they were very aggressive and active. I thought our girls did a great job of adjusting that second half. I thought the main difference in the game was we wore them down. We eventually got a lot of steals off our press and offensively we were much more active the second half."

The second half definitely belonged to the Bearcats.  Paige Patterson tallied 16 of her game-high 20 points during the last two quarters of the game.

"I thought Paige did a good job for us inside tonight," Allen said. "She looked to post and posted hard. She wanted the ball and our guards got her the ball. She does a lot of good things for us. She can not only score, but she can kick it out to our shooters as well. She's tough in there with her size."

Hannah Noe scored 16 points including one 3-pointers.  Erika Cobb hit 13 points and also sunk a trey.  Dakota Reynolds scored 11 points and also added a 3-pointer.  Alison Jarrell contributed two 3-pointers.

"I thought we worked really hard defensively," Allen said. "We wore them down by how hard we played. We want to keep concentrating on our defense and have our conditioning right to play hard defensively the entire game."

The Dexter Bearcats (19-3) travel to Twin Rivers on Thursday, February 20th with game beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Final Score Dexter 70  Poplar Bluff 48

Poplar Bluff   16  11    9  12  -  48

Dexter           14  17  23  16  -  70

Poplar Bluff (48) - Megan Knuckles 2, Lexi Hafford 2, Soley Webb 2. Halle Huffman 2, Cassidy Harris 10, Courtney Raulston 14, Katelynn Bratcher 2, Samantha Gatewood 6, Katelyn Slaughter 8. FG 21, FT 4/9, F 9. (3-pointers: Courtney Raulston 2. Fouled Out: none)

Mules Roll Over Hayti 63 - 50

Bernie, Missouri – The Mules needed this win!  They wanted this win! And they got the win!  The Bernie Mules hosted the Hayti Indians and whoever won this game would earn the #1 spot in the Class 2 District 1 basketball tournament seedings to be released this week.

"It was good to see some fire in our kids tonight," Bernie coach Brad Botsch commented in a press release. "We've been playing without much emotion or passion and we simply aren't talented enough to play that way. I've said all year 'our margin for error is small,' and tonight our kids came out and really executed well and played with intensity and confidence."

Junior guard Brandon Sparks came out of the gate scoring and never let up!  He had a game-high 24 points for the Mules.  He hit four 3-pointers and was perfect at the charity stripe sinking all eight of his free throws in the last quarter.  He was on fire!

“I thought Brandon really stepped up for us,” continued Botsch.  “We need all of our guys to step up.  Hopefully, this is a great confidence builder for him.”

B.J. Jennings tallied 12 points and Jake Wagner had 11 points including 3 treys.

Fans were excited to see Troy Kirkpatrick back in the game.  He tallied 9 points.  This was his first game back after being injured early in the season.  Coach Botch said, “It was awesome to see Troy back on the court.  He’s a great kid and competitor and he has worked hard to get back.”

"We took care of the ball much better than we have been and rebounded extremely well," Botsch said. "Hayti is one of the most talented teams we've played all year, and our kids did a great job of competing tonight against them. We really got a lift from Brandon Sparks tonight. Our seniors stepped up as well and players like Bubby Schwent and J.R. Pregel while they may not have scored a point, they got so much done defensively and toughness wise for us, and that isn't reflected in a box score."

The Mules will travel to South Iron on Thursday.  Game time 5:00 p.m.  Don't forget to mark your calendar for SENIOR Night on February 18th.  Game time 6:00 p.m.
