Dexter, Missouri – The Dexter Bearcats boys varsity basketball team had their best shooting performance of the season as they defeated the Perryville Pirates at the Bearcat Event Center Monday evening.
“I thought we played well,” commented Dexter’s head coach Rob Nichols. “We have had several close games this season that didn’t go our way. I think the biggest thing tonight was we shot the ball really well. We have had some games we lost by one or two points and when I go back and do the stats we shot only 24 to 28%.”
Dexter Bearcats had a great game shooting 25 of 33 from the charity stripe and had five players in double figures.
At the half the Bearcats were leading 28-21. The Pirates came out of the locker room with a short burst of energy and made up those 7 points and tied the game in the first 3 minutes of the 3rd quarter.
“That was a bit of a turning point for us, “ continued Nichols. “We went from being up seven at the half to tied. After that our kids dug in and built that lead back up. Then in the fourth quarter Perryville started fouling pretty early and we did a great job of making free throws.” Dexter hit 18 free throws in the 4th quarter with only 7 points coming from regular play.
Five Dexter Bearcats were in double figures against the Perryville Pirates. D.J. Dowdy tallied a team-high 18 points for the Bearcats. He scored in every quarter.
Austin Chesser sunk 13 points including 2 treys. Cole Renken also hit 13 for the Bearcats and Ethan Flowers scored 10 points including 2 treys. Peyton Pollock tallied 10 points with a trey of his own. Noah Kronk was just short of double figures ending the night with 9 points including a 3-pointer.
“We haven’t done this all year,” Nichols said of his players scoring in double figures. “We have had some games where at least two guys get in double digits. We’ve rarely had three in double digits. It shows our kids are sharing the ball a little better. We scored some with our defense too and that always helps.”
When asked about Dexter’s free throwing ability Coach Nichols stated, “We have lost three or four one or two-point games this year when our free throw shooting or overall shooting had been poor. The kids tonight hit some big shots when we were getting stops. In the fourth quarter we made about every free throw until the end. I was really proud of those guys stepping up and hitting free throws tonight!”
Final Score Dexter 75 Perryville 69
Perryville 8 13 18 30 - 69
Dexter 13 15 22 25 - 75
Perryville (69) - Grant Dix 5, Trenton Green 8, Luke Schlichting 2, Brett Schnurbusch 4, Garrett Martin 15, Colin Stief 2, Eli Tripp 7, Colin Schirmer 26. FG 24, FT 16/20, F 20. Dexter hosts Bell City tonight, February 11th at 6:00 p.m. in the Bearcat Event Center.
"We have got to come out and play like we did tonight. There are no easy games for us," Nichols said. "Bell City will be competitive and that will be a game we will have to play well to win. It will be the last county game so our kids should be excited playing at home. We hope to have a good effort."
Congratulations Bearcats on your win! Dexter is now 4-12 on the season.

Cape Girardeau, Missouri – The Lady Bearcats traveled to Notre Dame High School to take on the highly ranked Bulldogs. These two teams are probably the top two teams in Southeast Missouri and what a great performance by both.
It was the Lady Cats coming out on top as they defeated the Bulldogs 60-54. It wasn’t easy and the ‘Cats new they had to put it all out on the court to earn this victory. They have competed against each other three years in a row in the Class 4 District 1 championship game with the Lady ‘Cats winning each time. It’s always good feeling for the Bearcats when they can defeat them in regular season as well.
The first half seemed to belong to the Notre Dame Lady Dogs though they were only ahead by 2 going into the 3rd quarter. “We didn’t defend very well in the first half,” stated Dexter’s head coach Chad Allen. “Notre Dame had too many open looks because we weren’t rotating quickly enough.”
Dexter owned the second half with their defensive strategy. They scored 25 points to Notre Dame’s 17 and Dexter’s awesome defense literally shut the Dogs down in the fourth quarter allowing only 6 points.
“I thought the girls did a great job in the 2nd half adjusting defensively,” continued Allen. “We only gave up 17 points in the 2nd half and only 6 in the 4th quarter.”Hannah Noe #10 had the game-high 21 points for the Bearcats hitting two treys. Alison Jarrell #12 scored 12 points all from 3-pointers. Erika Cobb #15 tallied 11 points and Paige Patterson #22 added 10 points.
The Dexter Bearcats will host Saxony Lutheran on Wednesday at the Bearcat Event Center.
Game time is 6:00 p.m.
