Bernie, Missouri - The Mules finally got to play in the barn tonight; however the Eagles of East Prairie just wouldn't let them win.  It's been a few days since we have seen any basketball.  With the Wintery weather and school closings, several games and tournaments have been rescheduled.

The East Prairie Eagles JV boys basketball team brought many fans to Bernie on Wednesday evening.  The JV Tournament was well underway by the time the Mules and Eagles jumped on the court.  In previous match-ups of the night Senath-Hornersville Lions beat the Clarkton JV Reindeer 57 - 37, Holcomb Hornets beat the Gideon Bulldogs 56 - 35 and Portageville Bulldogs beat Cooter Wildcats 58 - 33.

East Prairie never trailed during the game, but the Mules were able to get within a basket several times during the 3rd and 4th quarters.  The Eagles jumped out to an 11 point lead in the 1st quarter.

JV Mules are Austin Beck #1, Alex Guzman #4, Jayce Burk #5, Corbin Brown #11, Austin Parson #12, Drew Murphy #14, Haydn Owens #22, Cole Mayberry #25, Usvaldo Anastacio #31, Trey Kirkpatrick #40, and Riley Wells #42.

Two Mules were in double digits.  Austin Beck had a game high 20 points and Cole Mayberry tallied 10 more for Bernie.  There were 13 fouls for the Mules including one technical foul by the coach.  Jayce Burk and Austin Beck scored one trey each.

Playing for the Eagles were Brad Ditto #1, Dylan Lingle #4, Brett Ellis #10, Noah Graves #11, Michael Graham #12, Chad Houseman #20, Deverance Jones #23, Cade Douglous #30, Rex Leplant #33, Tyson Baker #34, Nate Owens #40, Dylan Brown #42, Alex Cowgill #43 and Dalton Cobb #44.

It was definitely a team effort in scoring by the Eagles.  Brad Ditto was the only Eagle in double digits tallying 10.  Dylan Lingle added 7 along with Deverance Jones who had 8 points and Cade Douglous who added 7 more.  Rex Leplant had 6 points.  Nate Owened had 3 and Noah Groves added 2 as well and the only trey by the Eagles was made by Brad Ditto.   The Eagles earned 12 fouls in the game and shot 12 of 26 in free throws.

Final Score East Prairie Eagles  43   Bernie Mules  38

JV East Prairie Eagles     15    8      11      9
JV Bernie Mules              4     11     11   12

The Bernie JV Tournament will resume play on Saturday, December 14th.  Times to be announced.  As soon as we have the latest information we will post on our ShowMe Times Facebook page.

Bluejays Fly Away with Win over Dexter

Charleston, Missouri – It was definitely not a great night for Bearcat fans.  Both the JV Boys and Varsity Boys Basketball teams lost their games at Charleston and the Dexter Middle School Bearcats fell to Sikeston at home.

"Charleston is an exceptionally good team and a good program.  They have had some great years and have built a reputation of a team everyone wants to beat.  There is no question they are good this year," commented one Bluejay fan and former graduate.  The Bluejays have already competed against teams from West Memphis, AR and Covington, TN.  Both games played in New Madrid, Missouri.  They lost to West Memphis by only 3 points, but defeated Covington 70-43.

Delfincko Bogan a junior tallied a game-high 26 points for the Bluejays including two 3-pointers.  Two other Bluejays were in double digits, Shandor Webster added 20 along with Demontrail Clark who had 11 points.

Charleston outscored Dexter by 31 points prior to the half.  The lowest scoring quarter was the fourth when both team managed only 10 points total.

Dexter’s Blake Horton scored first for the Bearcats, but the Charleston Bluejays were able to hold each player to single digits.  It was a very fast paced game.  D.J. Dowdy and Peyton Pollock both scored a 3-pointer.

"We just had way too many turnovers and empty possessions early in the game," stated Head Basketball Coach Rob Nichols.  "We turned the ball over the first 6 times we had it, and it led directly to uncontested or easy baskets for Charleston in transition."

"We never really looked comfortable all night.  We are playing some young players, and we saw some speed and quickness that we weren't ready for.  There will be some growing pains, but I do feel that this team will improve over the course of the season."

Final Score Charleston 80 – Dexter 33./images/Dexter High School 2013-14/Charleston Boys Basketball.jpg

The JV Bearcats played extremely well, but fell short by only five points.  Jason Jarrell tallied a game-high 14 points including one trey.  Ethan Flowers was right behind him with 13 points and scored two 3-pointers for the Bearcats.  Addison Moore was the only other Bearcat in double digits scoring 11 including a 3-pointer.  Final score Charleston JV 53 – Dexter JV 48.

Charleston will compete in the SEMO Conference Tournament in Sikeston on December 9th – 13th.

Dexter will be back in action Friday night at home (weather permitting) against Sikeston.  Game time is 6:00 p.m.  Please stay tuned to our Facebook page for further information concerning the game and weather.
