Charleston, Missouri – It was definitely not a great night for Bearcat fans. Both the JV Boys and Varsity Boys Basketball teams lost their games at Charleston and the Dexter Middle School Bearcats fell to Sikeston at home.
"Charleston is an exceptionally good team and a good program. They have had some great years and have built a reputation of a team everyone wants to beat. There is no question they are good this year," commented one Bluejay fan and former graduate. The Bluejays have already competed against teams from West Memphis, AR and Covington, TN. Both games played in New Madrid, Missouri. They lost to West Memphis by only 3 points, but defeated Covington 70-43.
Delfincko Bogan a junior tallied a game-high 26 points for the Bluejays including two 3-pointers. Two other Bluejays were in double digits, Shandor Webster added 20 along with Demontrail Clark who had 11 points.
Charleston outscored Dexter by 31 points prior to the half. The lowest scoring quarter was the fourth when both team managed only 10 points total.
Dexter’s Blake Horton scored first for the Bearcats, but the Charleston Bluejays were able to hold each player to single digits. It was a very fast paced game. D.J. Dowdy and Peyton Pollock both scored a 3-pointer.
"We just had way too many turnovers and empty possessions early in the game," stated Head Basketball Coach Rob Nichols. "We turned the ball over the first 6 times we had it, and it led directly to uncontested or easy baskets for Charleston in transition."
"We never really looked comfortable all night. We are playing some young players, and we saw some speed and quickness that we weren't ready for. There will be some growing pains, but I do feel that this team will improve over the course of the season."
Final Score Charleston 80 – Dexter 33.
The JV Bearcats played extremely well, but fell short by only five points. Jason Jarrell tallied a game-high 14 points including one trey. Ethan Flowers was right behind him with 13 points and scored two 3-pointers for the Bearcats. Addison Moore was the only other Bearcat in double digits scoring 11 including a 3-pointer. Final score Charleston JV 53 – Dexter JV 48.
