Cardinals Win 12-Inning Game Against the Pirates
St. Louis, Missouri - Matt Holliday's RBI single in the bottom of the 12th lifted the St. Louis Cardinals over the Pittsburgh Pirates, 6-5, in the rubber match of a three-game series.

Bryan Morris (5-6), who pitched a scoreless 11th, stayed on to pitch the 12th for the Pirates. With one out, Matt Carpenter walked and Jon Jay singled to put runners on the corners. Holliday followed with the game-winning hit to center.

Carpenter finished 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Cardinals, who moved within two games of Pittsburgh for first place in the NL Central. Holliday and Daniel Descalso each knocked in two runs.

"Every team is going to face adversity and have the ups and downs," said Holliday. "We play the Pirates a lot in the last few weeks so winning these games is going to be important for us."

St. Louis starter Lance Lynn allowed four runs on eight hits while striking out six over 5 1/3 innings. Kevin Siegrist (1-1) got the win after pitching a scoreless top of the 12th.

Russell Martin and Clint Barmes homered for the Pirates, who have lost five of six. Andrew Lambo and Neil Walker added an RBI apiece.

A.J. Burnett got the start for Pittsburgh and gave up five runs on eight hits over 4 1/3 innings.

"They're aggressive at times and they're passive at times," Burnett said. "It's on me tonight."

After four scoreless innings, the teams combined for nine runs in the fifth. Garrett Jones started the top half with a single and raced home on Lambo's double to right-center field. Barmes followed with a two-run homer to left. The scoring continued when Starling Marte tripled to right-center field and crossed the plate on Walker's sacrifice fly.

St. Louis responded with five runs in the bottom half. Matt Adams singled and David Freese doubled to get things going. Descalso followed with a two-run single to center. Carpenter's triple to right plated Descalso. Jay added an RBI single to right and scored himself on Holliday's double to left-center field on a ball which sailed past a diving Andrew McCutchen.

The Pirates were close to tying the game in the seventh. Pinch-hitter Josh Harrison doubled to right-center field and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Harrison got caught in a rundown between third and home when Walker hit a grounder to first.

Pittsburgh did manage to tie the contest in the eighth when Martin homered off Trevor Rosenthal.

Pittsburg, Pennsylvania – After seven straight losses from the St. Louis Cardinals, they finally got back on track after defeating the Pittsburg Pirates in their rivals’ very own stadium.

Joe Kelly threw six shutout innings and the Cardinals got two RBI from Allen Craig, Jon Jay, and Tony Cruz in a 13-0 rout at PNC Park.

The Cardinals, who pounded out 17 hits and scored eight times in the seventh inning, won for the first time on this road trip, which will conclude with a three-game set at Cincinnati.

"It's definitely a change in attitude and a change in atmosphere and a good way to leave here," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said.

Kelly (2-3) allowed three hits and also went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored a run.

The Pirates were limited to five hits, two of them coming from Starling Marte. Despite their only loss in this five-game set, the Pirates will head into Friday with a 1 1/2 game lead in the division.

"We held a team in the bag for four days and the cat got out tonight," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said.

Charlie Morton (3-3) surrendered 10 hits and five runs over six frames. He has gone 0-5 in his last six starts against the Cardinals.

Singles from Jay and Cruz put runners at the corners with two outs in the second. Morton then uncorked a wild pitch and was late covering the plate, allowing Jay to come home with the first run.

Morton struck out to leave the bases full in the bottom portion, and the Cardinals scored three times in the fourth. Jay was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Holliday then Matt Holliday scored on Cruz's double-play groundout. Pete Kozma followed with an RBI base hit to center.

St. Louis couldn't score after the loaded the bases in the fifth and Neil Walker grounded out with two men in scoring position in the bottom of the frame.

Carlos Beltran made it 5-0 in the sixth with an RBI double, which scored Kelly.

The Cardinals shelled Jeanmar Gomez in the eighth. The right-hander was pounded for seven runs -- five earned -- on four hits and a pair of walks.

Jay singled in a run and Cruz doubled to the left field corner to drive in two for an 8-0 margin. Matt Carpenter lifted a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to right.

Vic Black entered with the bases full again and Craig doubled to left for two RBI. Holliday's run-scoring groundout and Freese's RBI double capped the huge inning.

Jonesboro, Arkansas - The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) has announced that three members of the 2012-13 Arkansas State men’s golf team, including Wessel Zwiegers, Chance Holden and Easton Key, have each been named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar.

The three A-State golfers are among 152 Division I-A players across the nation to receive the honor recognizing student-athletes who are either a junior or senior academically, competed at least three full years at the collegiate level, participated in at least 70 percent of their team’s competitive rounds or in the NCAAChampionships, held a stroke average under 76.0 and maintained a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2.

"I'm extremely proud of these three  young men,” said A-State head men’s golf coach Steve Johnson. “They have demonstrated that they've embraced the concept of ‘student-athlete.’ Not only have they excelled in the classroom, but all have been permanent fixtures on the starting lineup and missed the most class time. Taking that into account, plus the difficulty of their majors, makes them even more deserving of this award."

Zwiegers, a senior on last year’s squad, carried a 75.8 stroke average per round that ranked tied for second on the team behind only Key.  He collected two top-25 finishes, including a season-best tied for 10th place at the Bill Ross Intercollegiate.  The Cape Town, South Africa, native posted his best round at the Cobra-PUMAInvitational with a 2-under par 70.

Key held a team-best 75.2 stroke average as a junior last season while posting three top-20 finishes, including a championship effort at the Bill Ross Intercollegiate.  His season-low round of 69 was also shot at the Bill Ross tournament.  The Meridian, Miss., native finished tied for 18th place at the Sun Belt Conference Championships to lead the Red Wolves.

Chance Holden, from Dexter, Missouri, averaged 75.8 strokes while competing in a team-high 32 rounds.  The junior recorded three top-25 finishes, including a season-best tied for 11th place at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate and tied for 22nd place at the Sun Belt Conference Championships.  His low round of 70 was posted at the Jackrabbit Invitational.  Holden also recently qualified to compete at the U.S. Amateur, set for Aug. 12-18 in Brookline, Mass.

The Dexter Community is proud of Chance and his accomplishments!  Congratulations!  We wish you success in Brookline, MA!!
