DMS Lady Bearcats Sweep the Tigers

On Tuesday night the Dexter Middle School Lady Bearcats took on the Cape Central Lady Tigers in basketball action at T.S. Hill Middle School. This looked to be a tough match-up with the Lady Tigers as Cape Central seems to always bring good ball teams to compete with Dexter.
The Dexter 7th grade Lady Cats came out and played hard against the Central Lady Tigers on both offense and defense. Under the direction of Coach Chad Allen, all of the girls played a good game. By halftime of the game the Bearcats held a commanding lead of 40-7.
In the 7th grade game Hannah Thurmon led all scorers with an impressive 28 points on the night. Also having a good game was Taylor Wells with 16 points. The 7th grade Lady Cats finished the game with a solid all around performance and a 63-9 win over the Cape Central Lady Tigers.
As the game tipped off for the 8th grade Lady Bearcats the game was fast paced and exciting as Dexter jumped out to a first quarter lead of 17-4. Led by numerous rebounds and put backs Cheyenne Mosby finished the game with 22 points for the Dexter Lady Bearcats.
Both the 7th and 8th grade Middle School Lady Bearcat teams played very well in their wins over the Cape Central Lady Tigers on Tuesday night. These are two very well coached and talented teams of girls at Dexter Middle School.
So be sure to check out the 7th grade team as they begin tournament play at New Madrid County Central next Monday night. The 8th grade Lady Bearcats will be in action in tournament play at the Bearcat Event Center Saturday October 20th from 8:00 to 4:00.

SCAA County Volleyball Tournament Begins

Bell City Missouri - The Stoddard County Athletic Association's County volleyball tournament got underway Monday evening with first round action. The eight team bracket tournament single elimination tournament provides very competitive action from throughout Stoddard County.
The varsity is a showcase of volleyball talent as the Advance Hornets received the number one seed in the tournament, followed closely by the Dexter Bearcats and the Bernie Mules as number two and three respectively.
At the junior varsity level, only six teams were bracketed for the tournament, with Puxico and Dexter receiving first round byes for the tournament. Bell City and Richland do not have junior varsity teams. The Puxico Indian received the number one seed, followed by Dexter, Bernie and Advance.
In varsity action, Puxico and Woodland got the tournament kicked off tonight at 5:00 PM. The number 4 seed Indians of Puxico defeated the Cardinals of Woodland in two games - 25 to 11 and 25 to 10. A junior varsity game followed the opening game and pitted the Bernie Mules against Woodland. The number three seeded Mules found a challenge with the Cardinals but were able to capture the victory in round one in two games. Bernie defeated Woodland in the first game by a score of 25 to 18 and the second game by a score of 25 to 19. The Mules will play the number two seed junior varsity team on Thursday, October 11th at 6 PM in second round action.
The varsity teams of Bernie and Bloomfield took the court for game three of the night. The number three seed Mules of Bernie were able to keep the scoreboard in their favor, winning by a score of 25 to 17 in both games against the Bloomfield Wildcats.
The junior varsity teams from Advance and Bloomfield closed out the action for the night in a hard fought contest. A close fought match in the first game ended with the Hornets winning by a score of 25 to 17. Strong net play by Maddie Kennedy, Autumn Hurd and Kimsey Lillard proved to be a big challenge for the Wildcats in the second game with Bloomfield dropping that game to Advance by a score of 25 to 11. Tuesday night action will begin again at 5:00 PM when the powerful number one seed Advance Hornets will take on the number eight seed Bell City Cubs. That game will be followed at 6:00 when the hard smashing Dexter Bearcats team will take on the Richland Rebels. These two games will complete the first round action as there will be no junior varsity games on Tuesday.
The SCAA Brackets are below with game times and dates. You are encouraged to take the short trip to Bell City to support your favorite teams.

Bluejays Hand Dexter A Homecoming Defeat

The Charleston victory brought to an end a "Decade of Dominance" that the Bearcats had held over the Bluejays. Until Friday night, Dexter had defeated Charleston 10 straight years, with an average margin of victory of 26 points.
The Bearcats were unable to respond with a score, as they had a fumble and were forced to punt twice in their three possessions in the opening frame. At the end of the first quarter, Charleston was still on top 8-0.
Dexter took possession of the ball to start the second half, and found success with their run game. Solid carries by Wick and Foels moved the ball down the the Charleston 29 yard line, but the potential scoring drive ended with yet another fumble.

The Bluejays racked up 279 yards rushing in the game, but the majority of their success came in the first half. The Dexter defense allowed only 2 Charleston first downs and a total of only 56 yards of offense in the second half.
Homecoming usually brings in a big crowd for the Bearcats, but this was no usual Homecoming. The weather played a huge role keeping the fans out of the stands, and it was unkind to those on the field of play. The tempature dropped dramatically prior to game time, the wind was brutal, and at times the rain came down in sheets. All these factors led to both a sloppy field and some sloppy play as well. The two teams combined for a total of 9 fumbles on the evening, and both teams found it quite difficult to attempt to pass the ball consistently.
Charleston won the toss and elected to receive. They wasted no time in showing what their rushing attack was capable of, as their 7 play, 60 yard drive was culimated with a 16 yard touchdown run by Deiontral Winston. After a succesful two point conversion, Charleston established a 8-0 lead less than two minutes into the game.
The Bearcats were unable to respond with a score, as they had a fumble and were forced to punt twice in their three possessions in the opening frame. At the end of the first quarter, Charleston was still on top 8-0.Charleston opened the door for the Bearcats by fumbling on each of thier first two possessions of the second quarter. Trevor Waldner and Ryan Joyner came up big for the Cats by recovering the two fumbles, but the Dexter offense was unable to convert these opportunities into points on the board.
Midway through the second quarter, Dexter had driven the ball down to the Bluejays 20 yard line, but a 4th &9 pass fell incomplete and Dexter turned the ball back over to Charleston. Following long runs by Rontavious Clark & Robert Bogan, the Bluejays moved the ball to midfield. Two plays later, Clark worked his way to the outside and streaked down the sideline for a 45 yard touchdown run. The two point conversion was again successful, and Charleston extended thier lead to 16-0.
Following the touchdown, the Bluejays attempted an onside kick that was recovered by Dexter's Wyatt Kiger at midfield. On the second play from scrimmage, the Bearcats fumbled the ball again and gave possession back to Charleston with only 2:51 left in the first half. Charleston once again found success with running the football, and quickly moved into Dexter territory. Charleston quarterback, Michael Hull completed a pass to Winston, who was tackled by Jonathan Foels at the Dexter 4 yard line in what appeared to be the final play of the half. The Bearcats had already began heading into the fieldhouse, when the officials announced that they had awarded a timeout to Charleston with only 1 second left on the clock. On the following play, Bogan ran the ball around the left side and was met by Dexter's Brad Wick on the 1 yard line. With this huge defensive stop at the goaline, the Charleston lead at halftime remained 16-0.
Dexter took possession of the ball to start the second half, and found success with their run game. "We hit their backs all night long at the line of scrimmage, but we did not tackle well in the first half. In the second half we did a much better job of tackling." said Dexter coach Aaron Pixley.
Dexter's next possession started on thier own 35 yard line. On the second play from scrimmage DJ Dowdy found some open field on a quarterback keeper and ran 19 yards into Bluejay territory. Wick and Foels continued to run the ball well for the Cats, and Dexter moved the ball on the ground all the way down to the Charleston 19 yard line. It was there that DJ Dowdy found an open Chase Young in the end zone for the touchdown. Following the TD, Brad Wick ran the two point conversion in from the 3 yard line, and the Charleston lead had been cut to 16-8.
In the fourth quarter, Charleston had driven the ball into Dexter territory and were looking for the score that would put the game out of reach for the Bearcats, when Chase Young came up with a huge interception at the 18 yard line.
The situation brought back memories of last week's game with New Madrid, as Dexter once again had 5 minutes left in the game to drive the length of the field in hopes of tying the game with a touchdown and a two point conversion. Two pass completions by Ethan Stevens and Jonathan Page, followed up by a 9 yard run by Wick moved the ball down to the Bluejays 45 yard line. On the next play, Dowdy and Page hooked up again and the completion move the ball to the 28 yard line. However, that is as close as the Bearcats would come to scoring. On the next play a holding penalty backed the Cats up 10 yards, forcing Dexter to throw the ball downfield. On 4th and 15, Dowdy's pass to Young fell incomplete, and Charleston was able to succesfully run the remaining time off the clock, securing thier 16-8 victory.

The Bearcats were led in rushing by Brad Wick, who had 50 yards on 16 carries. Dowdy rushed for 33 yards, and Joyner had 8 carries for 29 yards.
Young and Page each had 2 receptions in the game, for 28 and 26 yards respectively. Freshman Ethan Stevens had one catch for 14 yards.
The Bearcats were led in tackling by Waldner and Noe, who each had 9 tackles. Foels finished the game with 7 tackles, and Page was right behind him with 6. Joyner and Quertermous each finished the night with 5 tackles.
With the loss, the Bearcats move to 1-6 on the season. Next week, Dexter will take on the Park Hills Rebels in what is the final home game of the season. Kickoff is set for 7:00 P.M.

DMS Football and 8th grade Lady Bearcats Successful

Both of these teams are having successful seasons in their respective sports, with the Lady 'Cats winning earlier in the week against the Doniphan Donettes 48-36 to put there record at 1-0. Last nights game would see them going up against an under-matched Campbell Lady Camels team. As the game began the Dexter Lady Bearcats offense was too much for the Donettes defense to handle as they went into halftime leading 42-0. The Lady 'Cats, led by guard Sydney Rogers who had 18 points and 2-3 from the free throw line, were too much for the Camels to keep up with. The Dexter Middle School Lady 'Cats won by the final score of 58-4.
Across the road the Dexter Middle School Football Team was battling the Charleston Bluejays and having success of their own. When Charleston kicked the ball off to start the game Jason Jarrell returned the ball all the way to Charleston's end zone for a touchdown.
After several attempts by the Bluejays to get going were unsuccessful, Dexter got the ball back and was able to drive the ball to midfield. With the 5:14 left in the first quarter Gavin Northcutt took a handoff to the outside for a long rushing touchdown.
Charleston was finally able to get on the scoreboard with a pass and catch in the end zone for a touchdown. Another kickoff return and a punt return for touchdowns by Jarrell would make the score 41-6 at halftime. One more touchdown and more dominant defense by the Dexter Middle School Bearcats in the second half would put the game out of reach for the Bluejays. The Dexter Middle School Bearcats put another win on their record with a victory over the Charleston Bluejays by the score of 48-6.
For the Middle School Bearcat football team this was the last game of a successful season for them. The Dexter 8th grade Middle School Lady Bearcats went to 2-0 on their young season and get ready to face the Woodland Cardinals next Monday night at T.S. Hill Middle School at 6:00 P.M.

Bearcat Volleyball Defeats Mules

Last night marked the last regular season game before the SCAA Tournament for the Lady Bearcat Volleyball Team.
The team hit the rode yesterday afternoon to take on the Poplar Bluff Mules. Coming off a win against Sikeston Monday night, the Bearcats had two days in the gym for practice before taking on the Mules.
A few young players have been asked to step up and compete on varsity and they’re holding nothing back. The team has continued to work together and keep winning all season.
Last night’s game against Poplar Bluff was a close one. It took three sets, but the Bearcats came out ahead and traveled home with a win.
In the first set, Dexter struggled to get their offense going as Poplar Bluff took the first set 19-25. The second set was a little different but much closer. The Bearcats came out knowing they had to win and they stepped it up and claimed a second set victory of 25-23. During the third set, the Bearcats knew they had to win. They ultimately took the last set with a 25-22 win.
The Dexter Bearcat Volleyball Team will compete in the Stoddard County Tournament starting Monday.
