Glenda Laverne Holder, daughter of the late Ewing Lawrence Brown and Pearl Mabel Lane Brown, was born January 29, 1935, in rural Dexter, Missouri and departed this life on September 23, 2024, at Winchester Nursing Center in Bernie, Missouri at the age of 89 years.
She was united in marriage to Cleo D. Holder on October 15, 1954, in Dexter, Missouri. Mr. Holder preceded her in death on September 27, 2018
Glenda was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Dexter and was a regular attender until ill health and lack of mobility made it impossible for her to attend.
Glenda and Cleo were avid travelers and had traveled to all 48 continual United States as well as drove to Alaska twice. In later years they would still go somewhere 4 or 5 days a week if only to have lunch and drive back home. One of their favorites was driving to Van Buren and having a burger and raspberry shake at Jolly Cone.
She is survived by two sons, Terry Holder and Timothy Holder (Kaye) all of Dexter, Missouri; by two granddaughters, Kristin Holder (Adam Wright) of Sikeston, Missouri and Kelsey Holder of Dexter, Missouri; by her sister-in-law, Jeanne Tripplett; and by many nieces, nephews and friends.
Other than her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Marvin Brown, Loyd Junior Brown, Elvis Brown and Ray Dean Brown; and by six sisters, Helen Taylor, Thelma Grobe, Wilma Renfro, Norma Brown (in infancy), Melba Atherton, and Lois Teets.
In honoring her request, she will be cremated, and a graveside service will be held October 19, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Dexter Cemetery.
Dorothy Elizabeth Burns, daughter of the late Franklin McLard and Rubie Tankersley McLard, was born on January 7, 1936, in Bloomfield, Missouri, and departed this life on September 21, 2024, at Cypress Point Skilled Nursing in Dexter, Missouri, at the age of 88 years.
Mrs. Burns had worked in the cook plant for Hudson Food’s in Dexter and was a former cake decorator for Wal-Mart and Town & Country in Dexter. She was a member of First Assembly of God in Dexter and a resident of Dexter.
On April 1, 1965, in Puxico, Missouri, she was united in marriage to Lee Roy “Red” Burns. Mr. Burns preceded her in death on November 11, 2013.
She is survived by two sons, Roy Burns and Troy Burns both of Dexter, Missouri; by her daughter, Deborah Wilson of Dexter, Missouri; by two sisters, Ruth Worley of Cape Girardeau, Missouri and Patricia Miller of Dexter, Missouri; by eighteen grandchildren, nineteen, great-grandchildren; and many great-great grandchildren.
Othe than by her husband and parents; she was preceded in death by her son, Mike Harris; by her step-son, Dennis Burns; by her step-daughter, Carol Rice; by four brothers, Michael McLard, Ed McLard, Mitchell McLard, and JR McLard and by her sister, Francis McLard.
Visitation will be held at Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, from 9:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Funeral services will then be conducted in the Mathis Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Dale Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Hagy Cemetery.
Jessie Oleta Whitley, cherished resident of Morehouse, Missouri, was on January 22 1938, Murray, Arkansas, to late Leonard and Isabelle (Henderson) Daniels. a fulfilling journey through, she departed from this world on September 28, 2024, in Sikeston, Missouri, the age of 86 years, 8 months, and 6 days.
On September , 1954, Jessie was united in marriage with Winfred Whitley in Morehouse, Missouri. Together, they created a warm and loving family that stands as a testament to their enduring bond.
A devoted member of the First Oneness Pentecostal Church in Morehouse, Jessie found joy in her faith and embraced the community around her. She enjoyed engaging in Bible study, reading, and was passionate about gardening and music. Her vibrant spirit was complemented by her love for outdoor adventures and the warmth of her handcrafted sewing projects. Above all, her family will forever treasure the comforting embrace of her warm hugs.
Jessie’s legacy lives on through her beloved family, which includes three daughters—Sharon Goodon, Marlene Kinder, and Kathy Newton—along with two sons, Michael Whitley and Winfred Whitley. She is also survived by a remarkable lineage of 11 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. As well as four sisters: Lela, Janet, Ruth, and Karen, and one brother Verlis. Jessie’s kindness and nurturing spirit will be deeply missed by all.
She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Winfred Whitley, and three great-granddaughters, alongside four brothers and one sister, who now welcome her in eternal peace.
Visitation for family and friends will take place on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, beginning at 10:00 A.M. at the First Oneness Pentecostal Church in Morehouse, Missouri.
A funeral service celebrating her life will follow at 11:00 A.M., officiated by Brother James Vent and Chad Cook. Interment will follow at the Triplett Cemetery in Dexter, Missouri.
James Walter Berry Jr. the son of the late James Walter Berry Sr. and Thelma Gwendolyn McKenzie Berry, was born in Poplar Bluff, Missouri on April 24, 1941 and departed this life at his residence in Bernie, Missouri on September 29, 2024 at the age of 83.
Mr. Berry was a Veteran of The United States Air Force. He later worked at Federal Mogul, having retired after 37 years. He was a member of Bernie Christian Church and a resident of Bernie.
He first was united in marriage to Carol Rae Sarratt in 1961. Mrs. Berry preceded her husband in death in 1997. He later married Karen Lee McCarver on December 5, 2004 in Malden, Missouri. Mrs. Berry survives of their home in Bernie.
Survivors include, his wife, Karen Lee Berry of Bernie, Mo.; by three sons, James Walter Berry Jr. & wife Carol of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Richard Berry & wife Rona of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Scott Berry & wife Sara of Maui, Hawaii; by two daughters, Christy White & husband Doug of Steele, Missouri and Misty Ruble & Matt of Farmington, Missouri; by one step-daughter, Leigh Ann Hancock & husband Ben of Poplar Bluff, Missouri; by 14 grandchildren, Cristyl, Jimmy, Kerrie, Camille, Billie Grace, Jameson, Gideon, Melissa, Elizabeth, Brandon, Blane, Carleigh, Brycen and Bryleigh; by three great-grandchildren; also by his Aunt, Billie Womack of Dexter, Missouri; by his cousin, Debbie & Danny Stoker of Dexter, Missouri; by one brother-in-law, Jack Sarratt & wife Rhonda of Dexter, Missouri; by Sister-in-law and Brother-in-law Sandy & Bill Absher of Marion, Illinois.

Barbara “Barbie” Lynn Davis, age 54, of Puxico, MO, died Saturday, September 28, 2024 at St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis, MO. Mrs. Davis was born August 13, 1970 in Dexter, MO, daughter of the late Garry and Minne Carolyn Rainwater (neé Stanfield).
She was a teacher for over 30 years. Most of her teaching career was at Puxico Schools, and she also taught for a year and a half at Poplar Bluff. She also coached cheerleading and volleyball and was very involved with the basketball program. Barbie truly cared about her students and took on a role of “school mom” to them.
She was a dedicated wife and a loving mother. On June 1, 1991, she married Jeffrey Davis. He survives. Also surviving are two children: Corey Davis of Puxico, MO and Jonathon Garrett Davis of Dexter, MO; one sister: Michelle (Phillip) Garner of Bell City, MO; two sisters-in-law: Janell Stewart and Jennifer (Oliver) McMeans both of Puxico, MO and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by one brother-in-law: Chuck Stewart.
Visitation will begin at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, October 2, 2024 at White-Sanders Funeral Home in Fisk. Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM on Thursday, October 3, 2024 at First Baptist Church of Puxico with Pastor Will Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Puxico Cemetery in Puxico, MO.
