In Memory of Dana Hawkins
In Memory of Dana Hawkins
Dana was a loving son, brother, husband, father, step-father, pawpaw and friend. He was born in Senath, Mo as the second of three sons to Bill and Diana Hawkins in 1963.
He had the kindest blue eyes, the “Hawkins eyes,” as many people refer to them. He was ready to drop anything to lend a helping hand or just to be a sounding board for a friend in need.
Music was his life. He was a ball-cap-backwards, foot-stompin’, stick-spinnin’ drummer. When he got behind the drums, he was in his element. An opportunity to play rarely passed him b, even if he had to talk himself up on the stage into a random band he was out watching for the night. He had a knack for taking charge of the beat somehow.
He was a hard worker. Working his way up the ladder at Lowe’s, he was able to “retire” at the young age of 39. Anyone that knew Dana, knows he couldn’t sit still for long and was always in the middle of a project somewhere.
He was a loving father. Madison and Jacob Hawkins were born to Dana and Missy Hawkins, high school sweethearts. He was a hard worker, but always made ample time for his family. From tossing a baseball around or playing Nintendo 64 into all hours of the night with Jake to helping Madison record “music videos” of songs she had written in tune with her preprogrammed songs on her keyboard and pretending that her easy bake oven cakes were the best he’d ever tasted. Each of his children inherited interests unique to Dana. Jake, who shares his dads love for music and can pick up and master any instrument as if he’d been playing it his whole life and Madison, who shared Dana’s love of history- having to always take the time to read every tiny plaque at any historical marker. As they grew, he was the tell-it-like-it-is advisor when they needed a kick in the pants and the loving arms they could always run to when they fell to put them back on their feet.
Dana met the love of his life in Lori. The first time Jake and Madison were introduced to Lori, they were so impressed and told their dad that he had to keep her. Dana and Lori married July 17, 2011 and he gained two incredible step children, Jim and Lauren Thrower. He loved both of them in a way that all step parents should love their step children. He was always there to talk and offer his help to them whenever they needed it or not. The stories and memories they share will never be forgotten.
Dana quickly became an LDQ fixture when he and Lori married. He was quickly introduced into the wonderful world of Leon’s Dexter Queen. Handyman Dana. From adding on and expanding to fixing a leaky faucet to changing a lightbulb, he was there. He could smoke pork like nobody else. Recently he had mastered the art of the Dexter Queen kitchen and the perfect meat to sauce to slaw ratio of a Lotta Pig and the secret LDQ Hot sauce recipe.
Dana gained a new title in 2013 with the birth of his grandson, Weston. He was now Pawpaw. Alivia Rose made him a Pawpaw twice over. Those kids were his heart and they thought Pawpaw hung the moon.
He was 55. Gone too soon, but he is now looking into the face of Jesus.
