ESSEX - The library at Richland School is a bit festive this week.
Librarian Karen Lane just happens to be a true fan of autumn, Halloween and all the fun things that accompany this time of year. So she came up with a unique idea to help give the school library a festive atmosphere and encourage students of all ages to visit the library.
Lane organized a pumpkin-decorating contest – with all types of creative pumpkins submitted by the Richland teachers and staff. Students – when they visit the library – have a change to vote for their favorite Pumpkin Creature.
“The kids are really wanting to visit the library more often,” Lane said. “I know there are students asking to leave class to go to the restroom just so they can swing through the library!”
And no wonder!
There are some pretty nifty creations crafted by the Richland staff. There’s a wonderful pirate, a farm family, a creation that celebrates the St. Louis Cardinals, a “pumpcupine” and a very creative pumpkin that has a replica of Vincent Van Gogh’s famous painting, ”Starry Night.”
The pumpkin will most likely stay in the library for Rebels young and old to view until the end of this week.

SMT Reader Doug Bailiff captured a great picture of one of the two vessels this morning as it passed by his office window in downtown Cape.
It's hard to believe that the Mississippi River was above flood stage during the spring - the water is currently low for this time of year, and the river is predicted to drop another few feet this week.
"It's been really cool seeing some of the private boats heading south for the winter," Baliff said.
This is a unique way of traveling from the Great Lakes states to "Snowbird" destinations along the Gulf Coast during the winter months.

Much of Homecoming for any Bearcat has to do with tradition, and one of the most iconic elements of Bearcat Homecoming is the crowning of the Fall Homecoming Queen. There is a seemingly timeless tradition of Homecoming Queens and her Courts at Dexter High School.
That tradition continued Friday evening with the presentation of the 2011 Homecoming Queen Court. Two candidates selected from five fall sports and activity teams – football, volleyball, tennis, cross-country and fall cheer teams - were nominated for the Homecoming Court.
Crowned Homecoming Queen 2011 was Lauren Ward. She received her crown from 2010 Homecoming Queen and DHS alumni Madison Pixley.
Lauren is a senior at DHS and is the daughter of David and Joy Ward. She is a member of the DHS Varsity Volleyball team, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Future Teachers of America, Dexter Honor Society, the Rowdy Gals and the DHS Student Council.
The volleyball team nominated Lauren.
Lauren’s Homecoming Court included Jessica Snider, first alternate, and Erika Mouser, second alternate.
Homecoming Queen candidates also included Bethany Christian, Morgan Cliff, Kelsey Frederick, Katie Justice, Jessica Lindsey, Malinda Mayo and Kendra Stevenson.
The Homecoming Court was presented and the queen crowned in pre-game festivities prior to the kick-off of the Bearcats Homecoming victory over the Caruthersville Tigers Friday evening on Bearcat Field at Charles Bland Stadium on the DHS campus.

The Bearcat Event Center was “painted pink” Thursday evening - all in an effort to raise awareness and funds to fight breast cancer.
The first-ever Dexter High School volleyball team’s “Dig Pink” game brought out volleyball fans and Bearcats united in a bigger cause. And the event had sports rivals reaching across the volleyball net to join together in the fight against breast cancer.
Bearcats and Mules joined together in an exciting evening that included a 50-50 drawing, a silent auction, and a great night of volleyball action. Fans arrived at the game decked in pink – or quickly donned a pink 18 Fore Life t-shirt that were on sale in the BEC lobby. Folks took their time studying the bidding on outstanding donations from local businesses in the silent auction, and there was a festival atmosphere for a the night.
Prior to the game, the Bearcats and Mules teams exchanged “pink” gifts for the players, and took turns having their photos taken surrounding a Poplar Bluff fans’ pink jeep.
“They might be rivals on the court, but they are united in the fight against breast cancer,” said organizer Stacy Blocker.
Proceeds from the evening’s activities – including sales of shirts, volleyballs posted on the wall, stickers, and the silent auction, netted nearly $5,000. All funds, Blocker said, will be donated to the 18 Fore Life Foundation and will be used to help families in the area who are fighting breast cancer.
“This is an exciting night,” Blocker said.
During a break in volleyball action, DHS alumni and Poplar Bluff’s forever volleyball coach, Carol Davis about the significance of “Dig Pink.” Davis, a 1972 graduate of Dexter High School, is herself a survivor of breast cancer.
“We all know that one in every eight women are touched by breast cancer,” she said. The Mules volleyball team honors Davis with the “Coach Davis Fight Like a Volleyball Player Trophy” for the Mules team that raises the most money for the school’s own Dig Pink effort.
