In Memory of Cynthia A. Hartley

Cynthia A. Hartley, daughter of the late J.W. Porter and Gladys Stewart Porter was born on November 27, 1957, in Essex, Missouri and departed this life on April 24, 2024, at the Memory Lane Nursing Facility in Dexter, Missouri at the age of 66.


Mrs. Hartley had worked at Tyson Foods, and she also did healthcare work as a CNA. She loved putting puzzles together and coloring. Her favorite thing to do was spend time with her family and be with her grandchildren.


For the last forty-one years she had developed a special relationship with her companion, Robert L. Smith Jr. Mr. Smith preceded her in death on January 1, 2024.


She is survived by her son, Robert C. Smith (Misty Rodgers) of Bernie, Missouri; by her daughter, Melisa McCulley (Jerry) of Malden, Missouri; by two brothers, Mack Pratt of Ottowa, Illinois and Robert Pratt of Dexter, Missouri; by three sisters, Lynn Sipes of Dexter, Missouri, Sharon Sue Weiss of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Jessica Voss of Canton, Ohio; and by six grandchildren, Colton Smith, Caitlyn Whittemore, Kaleb McCulley, Karson McCulley, Kylie McCulley, and Cody Elkins.


Other than by her companion and her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Paul Pratt; by three sisters, Rudy Padgett, Margaret Wiessman, and Peggy Dickerson; and by two grandchildren, Jared Elkins and Jacob Whittemore.


A celebration of life service will be conducted at a later date.

In Memory of Elwin Hoyt North

Elwin Hoyt North of Jonesboro, Arkansas, was born May 17, 1933 at Beech Grove, Arkansas to Oran and Clemmie North, who proceeded him in death.  Hoyt passed from this earth on April 18, 2024.  He married Bernice Londe on January 27, 1951 in Piggott, Arkansas.  She proceeded him in death.  He married Joanne Powell on August 23, 2002, she resides in the home. 


Surviving children are Mark (Debby) North , Timothy (Tina) North of St. Louis; Stewart (Marcy) North of Saratoga Springs, New York; Peggy (Charlie) Guerrero of Desoto, Missouri; and Jackie (Everett) Shields of Harviell, Missouri.  Step-children are Amy Higgins and Dean Powell of Jonesboro, Arkansas. Eleven grandchildren, Daniel (Sherri) North, Leah (Eric) Williams, Michael (Jessica) North, Carolyn North, Rosie (Rob) Spring, Ross North, Annie (Steve) Lippo, Jennifer (Mike) Walter, Greg (Erin) Moore, Justin Hager, and Amanda Parker; twenty-two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Also survived by brothers, Chris North, Jerry (Gerri) North, and Phillip (Sue) North of Branson, Missouri, Sister-in-law, Shirley Zebelman of Fort Myers, Florida. 


Mr. North was a retired auto mechanic and parts manager for various St. Louis, Missouri dealerships.  He and his family later moved to Poplar Bluff, Missouri where he worked for Montgomery Ward Auto Center.  After retirement Hoyt and Bernice made and sold wood furniture items at craft fairs around Missouri.  


He was a lifelong member of the Church Of Christ.  He enjoyed preaching, teaching and song leading at many small congregations of the church. 


He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and was an avid gardener.  He loved reading and studying his Bible and traveling with his wife, Joanne.  


A visitation  will be held Thursday, April 25, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Watkins and Sons  Funeral Chapel in Puxico, Missouri, with the Funeral Service at 1:00 p.m. and Preacher Hermam Fisher of Paragould, Arkansas officiating.


Internment will follow at the Puxico Cemetery in Puxico, Missouri with Watkins And Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of all arrangements.

In Memory of Don Magill

Don Magill, son of the late Howard Magill and Irene Wisdom Magill, was born on January 30, 1941, in Wappapello, Missouri, and departed this life on April 22, 2024, at his residence in Puxico, Missouri, at the age of 83 years.


Mr. Magill was a Veteran with the United States Coast Guard, serving in Vietnam and retiring after 20 plus years of service. He attended the Puxico Church of Christ.


On June 10, 1967, in Puxico, Missouri, he was united in marriage to Gail Kaufhold. Mrs. Magill survives of their home in Puxico.


Along with his wife, he is survived by his son, Brian Magill of St. Louis, Missouri; by his daughter, Tammy Garris (Jamie) of Puxico, Missouri; by three brothers, David Magill (Geneva) of Puxico, Missouri, Jimmy Magill (Diane) of Texas, and Bobby Parker of Michigan; by his sister, Betty Jones (Dennis) of Puxico; and by three grandchildren, Leann, Ashley (Luke), and Carter.


Other than by his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Billie Lowe, and Eva Magill; by his brother-in-law, Claude Lowe; and by two nephews, Leroy Lowe and Tony Magill.


Visitation will be held at Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter on Thursday, April 25, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Funeral services will then be conducted in the Mathis Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday, April 25, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. with Vernon Curry officiating. Interment will follow in the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield with full military honors.

Ethel Louise Francis, daughter of the late Alva Causey and Ruby Ziles Causey, was born on May 29, 1931, in Rural Essex, Missouri, and departed this life on April 22, 2024, at Cypress Point Skilled Nursing in Dexter, Missouri, at the age of 92 years.


Mrs. Francis was a former employee of Purolator. She attended First Baptist Church in Dexter, Missouri, and was a resident of Dexter. She enjoyed cross stitching, crocheting, and playing Bingo.


On August 30, 1952, in Essex, Missouri, she was united in marriage to Vernon Francis. Mr. Francis preceded her in death on September 3, 2003.


She is survived by two sons, Keith Francis and wife Jeanne of Saddlebrooke, Missouri, and Kevin Francis and wife Linda of Dexter, Missouri; by five grandchildren, Dustin Allen Francis, Tina Michelle Francis, Devin Michael Francis, Joshua Francis, and Ashley Cooper; by ten great-grandchildren, Megan Gilbert, Aaron Gilbert, Ryan Gilbert, Jaxson Francis, Sawyer Michael Francis, Aiden Cooper, Marley Francis, Charley Flanery, Andrew Francis, and Shelby Francis; and by four great-great grandchildren, Remington Sherbourne, Memphis Sherbourne, Drake Gilbert, and Tyler Gilbert.


Other than by her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Eloise Conner.


Visitation will be held at Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter on Saturday, April 27, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Funeral services will then be conducted in the Mathis Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at 12:00 p.m. with Rev. Rick Roberts officiating. Interment will follow in the Dexter Cemetery.

Inis Jone Anthony, daughter of the late Eugene Hathaway and Geneva Davis Hathaway, was born November 20, 1942, in Powe, Missouri and departed this life on April 20, 2024, at Heartland Care and Rehabilitation Center in Cape Girardeau, Missouri at the age of 81.


Mrs. Anthony was a registered nurse for labor and delivery for over twenty years at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. She attended the Word of Faith Church in Bernie, Missouri and was a resident of rural Dexter, Missouri.


On June 23, 1962, in Bernie, Missouri, she was united in marriage to Jimmie Wayne Anthony, Sr.   Mr. Anthony preceded her in death on December 4, 2016.


She is survived by her son, Jimmie Wayne Anthony, Jr. and wife Laura of Dexter, Missouri; by her daughter, Stacey Jean Ward and husband Brian of Leslie, Arkansas; by her sister, Susan Hartle and husband Dale of Bernie, Missouri; by seven grandchildren, Christopher Anthony (Rehenda), Brandi Anthony, Josh Anthony (Gabby), Connor Anthony, Danielle Morlan (Brandon), Westley Carter (Kayla) and Brittany Ward; by seven great-grandchildren, Selena Anthony, Zoe Anthony, Willow Anthony, Kyler Morlan, Noah Scott Morlan, Jensen Carter and Harrison Carter.


Other than her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Brian Scott Anthony.


Visitation will be held at Mathis Funeral Home in Bernie, Missouri on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will then be conducted in the Mathis Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday April 24, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Dale Hartle officiating. Interment will follow in the Gregory–Landcastor Cemetery in rural Dexter, Missouri.
