Bearcat Soccer All Star Series First in Our Community

Bearcat Soccer All Star Series First in Our Community

The first Bearcat Soccer All Star Series has been initiated in our community this year based on a selection of skilled players from the Spring Dexter Parks and Recreation soccer leagues for 3rd- 4th and 5th – 6th grades.  The event is intended to support the skilled soccer players in our community and helps to advance the promotion of youth soccer in our area for grades Kindergarten through 8th grade, and beyond.

This event has been sponsored by The Gill Group as the primary sponsor with Mid Continent Steel & Wire acting as the secondary sponsor. The series was initiated as a free event to support the continuation of soccer for skilled players in our community.  All players have received a free, authentic, numbered, soccer jersey with the Bearcat Soccer logo.

Alex Barney has helped to collaborate with other coaches from the Dexter Parks and Recreation Spring youth soccer leagues.  The All-Star series has formed a total of four teams from the selected players for both the 3rd-4th and 5th -6th original DPR teams: two teams per grade league.  A red and white team for each 3rd-4th and 5th 6th league competes in a three-game series of matches held at the DPR South Soccer field.

“A total of around 46 players have been participating in practices since the middle of May and have already had three intense, higher caliber soccer matches to date.  The level of play has really been a joy to watch.  I’ve noticed for a few years now that there really are players in the DPR leagues that truly love soccer and are fluent, naturally skilled players and that given the opportunity to continue the season just a bit longer with other players just like them…well you can really see them improve greatly.”

This Wednesday evening both leagues will compete with the Red and White teams from 3rd to 4th starting their final game of three at 5:45. The 5th – 6th grades Red and White teams will play immediately after 6:45.  The games consist of two 20 minutes halves with two five-minute extra-time halves should the game end in a draw.  Should the two extra-time halves still end the game with a draw the players will take a series of five kicks at the penalty marker to determine the winner.

“It has really been a team effort from the other coaches that have been involved, Brad Warner, Christina Duley, Preston Clark, Ronald Ahrens, Jacob Sluder, Tyler Holden, Michaela Schafer, Michael Carmack and Barry Crumley. Not to mention the support from Myles at DPR allowing us and helping us to create this event for our community.  The coaches, players and parents appear to be really excited about this.  We have even been able to get the support from local DPRs refs, which furthers their understanding of the sport and helps us make this event happen.  Audrey, Preston, and Scarlett have done a great job referring.”

Barney mentions that some of the coaches had discussed this idea on and off and that within about 72 hours both leagues had formed.  “Soccer is catching on around here; our players are good and with further good coaching can be outstanding players for a long time in sport that they love.  A short-term goal for us is to establish a 7th-8th grade soccer league through DPR or independently if need be and to continue sponsoring the all-star events.”  Long term, Barney hopes that by showing the increased demand for soccer from the children in our community that eventually High School Soccer could come to fruition in our local schools.  “It’s in the early stages now, but I’m confident that the enthusiasm I’ve seen from the parents, fans and most importantly the players in our area; that high school soccer can offer talented athletes an additional sport that is good for them physically and mentally.”
