In Memory of Melba “Louise” Stevens

Melba “Louise” Stevens, daughter of the late Clifford Quinn and Eva Bonner Quinn was born on March 28, 1930, in Bernie, Missouri and departed this life on April 4, 2023, at the Gideon Care Center in Gideon, Missouri, at the age of 93.

Louise had worked at the International Hat Factory, and then worked and retired from the USDA office in Bloomfield. She was a member of the Sadler Chapel United Methodist Church in rural Dexter. She enjoyed volunteering her time to her church, as well as the hospital auxiliary. She was also a member of the Stoddard County Church Women United group. Louise enjoyed cooking and baking for her family, church family and friends. She enjoyed growing a garden and canning her vegetables, so her family could enjoy it during the winter months.

On August 1, 1948, she was united in marriage to Thomas Edward Stevens in Piggott, Arkansas. Mr. Stevens preceded her in death on December 28, 2014.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Tony and Karen Stevens of Dexter, Missouri; by two brothers, Larry Quinn of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and Keith Quinn of O’Fallon, Missouri; by three grandsons, Cory Stevens and wife Jaime of Bloomfield, Missouri, Derek Stevens and wife Deana of Dexter, Missouri, and Ben Stevens and wife Sydney of Pollard, Arkansas; and by seven great-grandchildren, Jade, Isaac, Camden, Bailey, Isabella, Kyleigh and Lucas.

Other than by her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Rex Quinn and Leroy Quinn; and by three sisters, Ruby Smiley, Shelba Rhodes, and Lois Quinn.

Visitation will be conducted on Friday, April 7, 2023 from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter.

Funeral services will then be conducted on Friday, April 7, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. in the Mathis Funeral Chapel with Rev. C.E. Tuley officiating.

Interment will follow at the Sadler Chapel Cemetery in rural Dexter.

Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter is assisting with arrangements.

In Memory of Sheila Faye Bostic Mott

Sheila Faye Bostic Mott of Dexter, Missouri, daughter of the late McKinley and Edna (Deffendoelll) Hess was born on March 29, 1948, in Parma, Missouri, and passed from this life on April 10, 2023, at Dexter, Missouri, at the age of 75.

Sheila lived in the Southeast Missouri most all of her life. She attended the Dudley Community Church.  Sheila enjoyed shopping at yard sales and flea markets. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, fishing, spending time with family especially spoiling her grandchildren. She also truly enjoyed singing in church.

She married Jude Bostic on May, 25, 1965, and remained married until the time of his passing on October, 14, 2010, and later married David Mott in August of 2013, in Dudley, Missouri.

Sheila is survived by her husband of the home; one son, Chad Allen Bostic of Essex, Missouri; two daughters, Paula Rachelle (Houston) Smith of Dexter, Missouri, and Ashley Nicole Foster of Dexter, Missouri; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; two close personal friends Mary George and Charlotte Jones; as well as a host of family and friends. 

Sheila was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers and five sisters.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 13, 2023, from 12:00 P.M. until 1:00 P.M with Funeral Service to follow with Pastor Gary Ash officiating at the Watkins And Sons Funeral Chapel in Dexter, Missouri. 

Interment will be at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield, Missouri, with Watkins And Sons Funeral Service of Dexter in charge of arrangements.

In Memory of Daniel Lee (Shorty) Burton

Daniel Lee (Shorty) Burton of Morehouse, Missouri, son of the late Earl and Violet (Cato) Burton  was born on March 29, 1927,  in Polk County, Arkansas, and   passed from this life on April 4, 2023, at  Sikeston, Missouri, at the age of 96.

Shorty had lived in Southeast Missouri most of his life. He attended the Morehouse Assembly of God Church.  He enjoyed fishing, hunting, spending time with family especially spoiling his grandchildren. He was known as a practical joker, a talker who liked to tell tall but believable fish stories. 

He married Hazel Christine Freeman on February 6, 1952, in Piggott, Arkansas, remaining married until her passing  on December 17, 2014. 

Shorty is survived by one daughter, Sheila (Ronald) Stratton of Dexter, Missouri; five grandchildren, Jason (Jennifer) Burton of Morehouse; Pamela (Chris) Cross of Puxico, Missouri; Jami (Ryan) Greer of Navarre, Florida; Jeffery (Amanda) Stratton of Quilin, Missouri; Josh Appleton of Dexter; Dexter; as well as a host of family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one son, Delotes (Dodie) Burton, one grandson, Justin Lee Curd and great grandson, Kaleb Burton; and a close nephew, Ronnie Towe.

Visitation will be on Monday, April 10, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. with funeral service to follow at the Watkins and Sons Funeral Chapel in Dexter, Missouri, with Barbara Zook officiating. 

Interment will follow at the Walker Cemetery in Bloomfield, Missouri, with  Watkins And Sons Funeral of Dexter in charge of arrangements.

In Memory of Nelda Rozelle Cookson

Nelda Rozelle Cookson, 83 years, 9 months, and 20 days. She was born June 21, 1939, in Lott, Texas, the daughter of Zellner Plunk Lee and Irene Mustian Daniel. She passed away April 10, 2023, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, MO.

Rozelle's life career was in education, retiring from Puxico Schools. She truly loved all the children she taught. She recently spent time at Delta South Skilled Nursing facility in Sikeston caring for her husband, Carroll. They described her as a light that lit up the whole world. She was the most loving and caring individual to all the people who knew her. She was truly an inspiration to all. Her Christian Faith was always her anchor throughout her entire life. She was a member of the Asherville Church of Christ.

She married the love of her life, Carroll Cookson on December 1, 1956. Her pride and joy was seeing all her children and grandchildren obtain their college education and seeing their many successes.

Loving survivors include: her husband, Carroll Cookson son, The Honorable Stephen Cookson two daughters, Lesa (Jon) Murray and Lorie (Don) Grossheider sister, Mary Lyn Joyner brother and sister-in-law, Ronnie and Dee Cookson aunt, Pauline Lawler grandchildren, Tyler (Molly) Cookson, Kyle (Amber) Murray, Katie (Philip) Klaproth, and Clint Daniel Pogue step-grandchildren, Abby (Cyle) Huck and Neal (Kori) Grossheider great-grandchildren, Teagan and Ava Murray, Cooper and Milo Klaproth, Clayton, Levi, Clarey, and Liam Huck, and Eleanor Grossheider nieces and nephew, Karen (Roger) Brown, Janell Hill, Jeff (Debbie) Cliff, Julie Ridenmour, Jay (Carrie) Cookson and Brad (Christie) Cookson.

She was preceded in death by her parents stepfather, George W. Rylee brothers and sisters-in-law, J.T. and Phyllis Cookson, Ancel and Doris Cookson, Rena Mable and Quentin Ridenour.

Rozelle's visitation will be held on Friday, April 14, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Morgan Funeral Chapel in Advance, MO. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 15, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at Brown General Baptist Church located on County Road 275 north of Puxico, MO. Pastor John Rhodes will officiate. Interment will follow at Brown General Baptist Church Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Judes Childrens Hospital.

In Memory of Donna Karen Norden

Donna Karen Norden, daughter of Paul Edward Kennedy and the late Joyce Lorene Edwards, was born in St. Louis, Missouri on March 2, 1953 and departed this life at her residence in Rural Bernie, Missouri on April 9, 2023 at the age of 70.

Mrs. Norden had worked at Malden Flower Shop, Donna’s Flowers and Juanita’s Flowers all of Malden; also Twin Roses in Bernie, Missouri. She was a floral designer. She loved the Lord and was a part of Word Of Faith Family of Bernie.

She was united in marriage to Michael J. Norden Sr., in Malden, Missouri on August 31, 1968. Mr. Norden survives in their home in Rural Bernie.

Other survivors include her father, Paul Edward Kennedy of Bernie; by one daughter, Tracie Cobb & husband Jeromy of Bernie; by one daughter in law, Robin Norden of Bernie; by one brother, Rick Kennedy & wife Paulette of Bernie; by one brother in law, Terry Williams of Bunker, Mo.; by three sisters, Rhonda Rinker & husband Dave of Valles Mines, Mo., Beverly Adams & husband Bob of Malden, Kim Blake & husband Lannie of Malden; by one sister in law, Peggy Sue Kennedy of Bernie; by eight grandchildren, Eric Norden & wife Page, Brennen Norden, Ashley Weathers, Rhyan Cobb, Darrik Cobb, Emery Walls, Aiden Norden and Jayden Cobb; by one great-grandson, Isaiah Norden; also by other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death other than by her Mother, by three sons, Troy Norden, Michael Norden Jr. and Marcus Norden; by one brother, Robert Edward Kennedy; by one sister, Joy Nell Williams.

Friends may call at Mathis Funeral Home in Bernie, Missouri on Wednesday, April 12, 2023 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Funeral Services will be conducted on Thursday, April 13, 2023 in the Mathis Funeral Chapel in Bernie starting at 1:00 PM. Pastor Dale Hartle officiating. Interment will follow in Bernie Cemetery.

Mathis Funeral Home of Bernie is assisting with all arrangements.
