In Memory of Vernon C. Mathis

Vernon C. Mathis, son of the late Leo Erby Mathis and Mary Bessie Myers Mathis was born on July 8, 1935 in Sikeston, Missouri and departed this life on August 22, 2022 at the Crowley Ridge Care Center in Dexter at the age of 87.

Vernon was a Veteran of the United States National Guard, where he retired after forty-two years of service with the 1140th Engineer Company out of Sikeston, Missouri, attaining the rank of First Sergeant. Vernon retired from Missouri Utilities (currently Ameren Electric) as their construction superintendent in the Dexter office. He later worked at Allen Christian Buick GMC. Vernon had been a member of the First United Methodist Church in Dexter and sang in their choir. He also assisted with the Dexter Senior High School football program, in the press box for fifty years.

On October 31, 1953 he was united in marriage to June Faye Lawrence in Sikeston, Missouri. Mrs. Mathis preceded him in death on October 21, 2020.

He is survived by two sons, David and wife Cathy Mathis of Wappapello, Missouri and Greg and wife Lisa Mathis of Dexter, Missouri; by his daughter-in-law, Dana Mathis of Dexter, Missouri; by seven grandchildren, Ambre Curran, Eric Lawrence Mathis, Lauren June Starks and her husband, Bruce, Aaron Mathis and his wife, Brittany, Hannah Hindman and her husband, Ethan, Hunter Mathis, and Elijah Mathis; by nine great-grandchildren, Zach Curran and his wife Amanda, Jacob Curran, Madalyn Lockhart and her husband Alan, Colton Starks, Camden Starks, Maurice Davis, Taylor Ward, Harper Mathis and Blake Mathis; by his nephew, Jeff Lawrence and wife Dianne of Cape Girardeau, Missouri; by two great nieces, Sarah Houston and husband Kaleb and Kelsey Gibson and husband Dane; and by his great-great nephew and niece, Barrett Gibson and Emma Gibson.

Other than by his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his son, John Scott Mathis; by his grandson-in-law, Mark Curran; by his great-grandson, Xaiden Starks, by his brother, Robert Mathis and by his sister, Betty Feldewerth.

Visitation will be held on Friday, August 26, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. in the Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter.

Funeral services will then be conducted on Friday, August 26, 2022 at 12:00 p.m. in the Mathis Funeral Chapel in Dexter. Interment will follow in the Dexter Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Good Samaritan Fund, 1823 East State Highway 114, Dexter, Missouri 63841. Vernon loved dogs and cats, this fund helps stray animals receive medical treatment and care.
