In Memory of Charles Richard McRoy

Charles Richard McRoy, son of the late Charley McRoy and Jessie Lay McRoy, was born on October 14, 1942 in Bloomfield, Missouri, and departed this life on January 24, 2021 at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, at the age of 78 years.

Mr. McRoy was a former employee of Elder Manufacturing in Dexter, Missouri, and he was a farmer. He was a Kentucky Colonel and of the Assembly of God Faith.

He was united in marriage to Shirley Sandusky on June 24, 1961 in Dexter, Missouri. Mrs. McRoy survives of their home in Dexter.

In addition to his wife, Shirley, he is survived by his son, Scott McRoy of Dexter; by his daughter, Angela Ortt and husband Ken of Dexter, by three grandchildren, Ashley Soles, Chasity Davis, and Erik Ortt and wife Kaera; and by one great-grandchild, Owen Davis.

Visitation will be held at Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter on Friday, January 29, 2021 from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

Funeral services will then be conducted in the Mathis Funeral Chapel on Friday, January 29, 2021 at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Bonnie Cannell officiating.

Interment will follow in Hagy Cemetery in Dexter.

In Memory of Jonas Newton Matthews

Jonas Newton Matthews (94), well known as Jack, died at his home with his wife and son at his side, January 17, 2021 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Jack was born May 27, 1926, the son of Freda Bryant Matthews and Jonas Newton Matthews. He was married to Pauline Harper Matthews and father of Larry Matthews, and educated in the Bloomfield Schools.

In 1944 in he was drafted into the United States Army prior to his high school graduation. He engaged in combat throughout France, Czechoslovakia, and Germany, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge until the war in Europe ended with the surrender of Germany on May 8, 1945, having earned a Bronze Star and Combat Infantry Badge. At the age of 20 he returned home to finish his senior year of high school.

In 1948 he was elected to serve as Stoddard County Treasurer/Ex-Officio Collector. Following 8 years in that office, he was employed by the U.S. Department of Labor as a field representative for Job CORPS where he supervised technical training programs for youth camps in 11 states, including one at Mingo National Wildlife Refuge near Poplar Bluff, Missouri.

Relocating in Jefferson City in the 1961, he continued his legacy of service working for the U.S Department of Labor’s Veterans Employment and Training Service (VETS), following his retirement he was appointed to the Missouri Veterans Commission (MVC). He remained a commissioner for the next eight years. The former soldier went on to be one of the founding members of the MVC Foundation Inc., a non-profit organization supporting programs for the military veterans. Over the years he was an integral part of establishing, funding, upgrading veteran’s homes and building veterans cemeteries throughout the state of Missouri. A street was named in his honor and was dedicated at the Bloomfield Cemetery on Veteran’s Day 2021.

Jack was a lifelong Boy Scout being presented with the Silver Beaver award and Vigil Honor, Order of the Arrow. He served as Master of the Bloomfield Masonic Lodge and a member of Royal Arch and York Rites Masons. For over 70 years was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), American Veterans (AMVETS), Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) and Disabled American Vets (DAV). He was well known as an active golfer, having a hole in one at the age of 84, and enjoyed golf tournaments along with his wife Pauline.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers, Joe, Bob and Bill and his daughter-in-law Nancy Matthews. He is survived by his wife, Pauline, of 73 years, and his son Col. (Ret.) Larry W. Matthews, a 30-year Army veteran.

His burial service will be in the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield, Missouri on Thursday, January 28, 2021 at 11:00 a.m.

In Memory of Glenda Elizabeth Starnes

Glenda Elizabeth Starnes, daughter of the late Alfred Hill and Maxine Evelyn Eldridge Hill was born on September 1, 1951 in Des Arc, Missouri, and departed this life on January 21, 2021 at her residence in Dexter, Missouri, at the age of 69.

Mrs. Starnes was a homemaker. She was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Dexter. She enjoyed quilting and loved being called “Nana” by all her grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was united in marriage to Gaylon Starnes, Sr. on September 20, 1969 in Dexter, Missouri. Mr. Starnes survives of their home in Dexter.

In addition to her husband, Gaylon, she is survived by two sons, Gaylon Starnes, Jr. (Debbie) of Portage, Michigan, and Stacy Starnes (Teresa) of Puxico, Missouri; by one daughter, Carol Starnes of Dexter, Missouri; by three grandchildren, Zabrina Starnes, Cody Starnes, and Moriah Starnes; by three sisters, Bessie Cooper of Chaffee, Missouri, Rose West of Tyler, Texas, and Betty Vaughn of Chaffee, Missouri.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by four brothers, John Hill, Bobby Hill, Art Hill, and Freddie Hill; three sisters, Wilma Fite, Dora May Burleson, and Anna Burleson.

Visitation will be conducted on Saturday, January 23, 2021 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter. Funeral services will then be conducted on Sunday, January 24, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. in the Mathis Funeral Chapel in Dexter with Rev. Ian Crump officiating.

Interment will follow in the Hagy Cemetery in Dexter.

In Memory of Williams “Bill” A. Miranda

Williams “Bill” A. Miranda, son of the late Manuel Miranda and Irene Silva Miranda was born on September 7, 1938 at Somerville, Massachusetts, and departed this life in Southeast Health of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, on January 22, 2021 at the age of 82.

Mr. Miranda served his country as a 20-year veteran of the United States Marine Corp, retiring as a E-7 Gunnery Sergeant. After military retirement, he returned to Dexter where he was the Plant Manager for The Munter’s Corporation, was the former manager for several Southeast Missouri Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant’s, and was the former maintenance supervisor for the First Baptist Church in Dexter. He attended the First Assembly of God Church in Dexter, was the former Commander of the Kenady-Hanks Post 51 American Legion in Dexter and was a former member of the Kenady-Hanks Post Military Honor Guard.

He was united in marriage to Mary Martin on June 25, 1960 at San Fernando, California. Mrs. Miranda survives of the home in Dexter.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Richard (Pam) Miranda of Sikeston and Kevin (Tina) Miranda of Springfield: by two daughters, Linda Miranda and Kelly (Jeremy) Grams, both of Dexter; by one brother, Richard Miranda of Buena Vista, California; by one sister, Joann Hormuth of Borrego Springs, California; by nine grandchildren, LaTisha (Britt) Arnold, Caleb (Analise) Miranda, Connor Miranda, Tera (Shannon) Eubanks, Kyle (Allison) Espey, Miranda (Leighton) Hensley, Devon Rogers, Jaxen Grams and Jett Grams; and by twelve grandchildren, Taven Owens, Braxton Arnold, Dyson Arnold, Kannon Arnold, Skylon Arnold, Austin Eubanks, Aubrie Eubanks, Blakelee Hensley, Walker Hensley, Layla Hensley, Kal Espey and Lucas Standridge.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Melanie Miranda.

Friends may call at the Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 25, 2021. Funeral services will then be conducted at 1:00 p.m. in the Mathis Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mike Kohlbaker officiating. Interment will follow in the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield with Full Military Honors.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Plaza, Memphis, Tennessee 38105-9959.

In Memory of Gerald Leon Norman

Gerald Leon Norman, son of the late John Henry Norman and Beulah Marsh Norman, was born on July 14, 1942 in Harvell, Missouri, and departed this life on January 18, 2021 at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, at the age of 78 years.

Mr. Norman is a Veteran of the United State Army, serving in Vietnam. He was a former Civil Service employee, working as a mechanic. He was a resident of Dudley, Missouri.

He is survived by three children, Michele Carrell and husband Darren of Dallas, Texas, Melinda Miranda and husband Diego of San Antonio, Texas, and Matthew Norman and wife Angela of Corpus Christi, Texas; by two brothers, Johnny Norman of Illinois and Larry Norman of rural Dexter, Missouri; by his companion, Patricia Evans of Dudley, Missouri; and by five grandchildren, Ashton Guerrero, Colton Carrell, Austin Guerrero, Reyann Guerrero, and Kileigh Carrell.

He was preceded in death by his parents; by his sister, Louella Luckett; and by five brothers, Tom Norman, Nate Norman, Everett Norman, Lindell Norman, and Glenn Norman.

A memorial service will be held at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery on Monday, January 25, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. with full military honors.
