Dexter, Missouri - With 29 young athletes competing on the mats this year expectations are high for the wrestling Bearcats. They open with a home meet and have a few more home meets than past seasons. Dexter will open at HOME on Tuesday, December 3, 2019 and will host four meets this year. Their first meet begins at 5 p.m. and are hosting Sikeston, Notre Dame, and DeSoto.
"This might be the deepest squad that we've had in awhile and I expect the competition in the wrestling room to really ramp up as the season progresses," stated head Wrestling Coach James Sneed. "Good group of kids this year and look forward to seeing how the season plays out."
There are six returning State Qualifiers from last year, they are Wyatt Parker, Bryston Pemberton, Parker VanSlyke, Travis Waldner, CJ Greene, Alex townsend, and Mason Keena.
"Parker is a senior and will wrestle at 132 lbs this year," continued Sneed. "He has really improved and I look for him to have a good senior year."
"Pemberton is also a senior and will wrestle at 120 lbs. He is a tow time qualifier and came into the start of this season in a lot better shape than in the past and I think that will really help him throughout the year."
"VanSlyke is a senior as well and will wrestle at 182 lbs. Parker is a battler out on the mat and I look for him to continue to improve."
"Waldner will wrestle at 170 lbs and is a senior. He bumped up 4 weight classes this year. He is a 2-time medalist and looks to become the schools first 3 time medalist at state in wrestling."
"CJ Greene is a junior and will probably wrestle at 126 lbs. I expect him and senior Cutter Cornett to battle it out for the 126 lbs spot and either one could be a qualifier."
"Alex Townsend is also a junior and will wrestle in the 160 lb weight class again this year. I expect him to continue to improve in the wrestling room after having a good football season."
"Mason Keena is a senior and battle Mono at the end of last year. He would have been a state qualifier if he had been healthy and I totally expect him to qualify this year," state Sneed.
Looks like the Dexter High School will have an amazing wrestling season!
