Dexter, Missouri - The Dexter High School varsity baseball team fought back after falling down by four runs in the sixth inning, but it wasn't enough to take out the Malden Green Wave. They fell short by only one point 8-7 on Saturday, March 16, 2019 at East City Park in Dexter. Malden is the 2018 defending Class 3 state champions.
In the bottom of the third inning, Dexter tied things up at two. Despite their home opener loss they collected seven hits. Malden tallied 12 hits.
After Malden scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning, the 'Cats answered with three of their own on a double by Garrett Henson and a stolen base by Ethan Kincy.
The Green Wave scored on a double 1-1 count bringing home a runner. The 'Cats answered when Henson doubled on a 0-1 count scoring one run. Dawson Jones singled driving in another run.
Malden pulled away for good with three runs in the fourth inning.
Luke Thurston started on the mound for Dexter. He went three innings, allowing two runs on six hits, striking out seven and walking one. Riley Slusher was charged with the loss permitting three runs, none were earned, on one hit with two strikeouts and three walks in one inning.
Jones, Peyton Driskill, and Riley Slusher each contributed in relief for the Bearcats.
Ethan Kincy went 2 for 3 at the plate to lead the 'Cats in hits.
Haden Hillis led the way in stolen bases earning him 3 steals. He also scored 3 runs but was 0 for 3 at the plate included getting hit by a pitch early on.
