Bernie Cheerleaders Celebrate Winter Sports Senior Night 2019

Bernie, Missouri - Eight Bernie High School seniors were honored during Senior Night at the last regular season basketball game on Friday night against the Malden Greenwave, three players, four cheerleaders and the mascot Maverick.

Senior cheerleaders

Cymber Arnold, daughter of Derik and Casey Arnold and Tom and Lacey Winchester. Arnold's activities include Student Council, FBLA, FCA, Beta Club, Volleyball, Cheerleading and Softball. Her future plans after graduation are to attend John A. Logan College to play volleyball and work towards obtaining an Engineering Degree.

Ryleigh Foster, daughter of Shannon and Pam Foster. Foster's activities include Volleyball, Cheerleading, Beta Club, Yearbook, FCA and FBLA. Her future plans after graduation are to attend college and become an Ultrasound Tech.

Makayla Turner, daughter of Lisa Turner and Ron Turner. Turner's activities include Beta Club, FBLA, FCA, Student Council, Yearbook, Volleyball, Cheerleading and Softball. Her future plans after graduation are to attend the University of Missouri and pursue a major in Architectural Studies in Interior Design.

Madi Wooldridge, daughter of Chad and Heather Wooldridge. Wooldridge's activities include Volleyball, Cheerleading, Softball, Yearbook, FBLA and Beta Club. Her future plans after graduation are to attend college and major in Biology and become a Dermatologist Assistant.

Missouri Conservation Commission approves crappie regulation change at Wappapello Lake

The new regulation is effective March 1.

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) Commission approved at their February meeting the proposed crappie regulation change at Wappapello Lake. As of March 1, the regulation will be a daily limit of thirty (30) crappie, but not more than fifteen fish can be greater than 9 inches in total length.

This is a change to the previous regulation of a daily limit of 30 and a nine-inch minimum length limit that has been in place since 2006. Based on the biological data and information gathered from anglers through creel surveys and public meetings, this is a must needed change according to Dave Knuth, a MDC fisheries management biologist.

“We see large fluctuations in the quality of the crappie fishery at Wappapello Lake from year to year, which is largely driven by the stability of the water levels,” Knuth said. “Crappie growth can be extremely variable in Wappapello Lake and length limits are not effective when growth is slow and not consistent from year to year.”  

The new regulation will increase harvest opportunities for anglers during poor years.

“We heard what anglers were saying about the 9-inch minimum length limit, the large number of short fish anglers were catching and the limited number of harvestable size fish available,” Knuth said.

The new regulation will also increase the opportunity for anglers to harvest the slow growing Black Crappie. Only about two percent of the Black Crappie ever reach 9 inches in Wappapello Lake before they die of natural causes, Knuth said.

“I encourage anglers if they do keep fish under 9 inches to keep Black Crappie,” he said. “Black Crappie are more robust than the White Crappie at smaller sizes. Reducing Black Crappie numbers in the lake may improve White Crappie growth by reducing the competition between these two species.”

Also, limiting the number of fish over nine inches will keep some of the bigger fish in the lake a little longer. This will maintain some consistency in the quality of the fishery even during poor years.

“We will continue to monitor the fishery intensively to determine if the regulation is producing the desired results,” Knuth said. “Like many of the anglers that fish this lake, I am excited to see this change.”

2018-2019 Class 4, District 1 Girls Basketball Tournament Seeds Released

Cape Girardeau, Missouri - The 2018-2019 Class 4, District 1 Girls Basketball Tournament seeds and bracket has been released on Saturday, February 16, 2019.

Games will be played at Cape Central High School.

The #1 seed goes to the Lady Bearcats of Dexter followed by #2 Notre Dame, #3 Sikeston, #4 Perryville, #5 Cape Central, and #6 Fredericktown.

Perryville will play Cape Central at 5:00 p.m. on February 23rd.

Sikeston will play Fredericktown at 2:00 p.m. on February 23rd.

Dexter will play the winner of the Perryville/Cape Central game at 6 p.m. Monday, February 25th.

Notre Dame will play the winner of the Sikeston/Fredericktown game at 7:30 p.m. on February 25th.

February 28th at 6 p.m. will be the District Championship!

2018-2019 Class 4, District 1 Boys Basketball Tournament Seeds Released

Cape Girardeau, Missouri - The 2018-2019 Class 4, District 1 Boys Basketball Tournament seeds and bracket has been released on Saturday, February 16, 2019.

Games will be held at Cape Central High School on February 23rd, 26th and 28th.

The Sikeston Bulldogs received the #1 seed followed by #2 Cape Central, #3 Notre Dame, #4 Dexter, #5 Perryville, and #6 Fredericktown.

Dexter will play Perryville on February 23rd at 6:30 p.m.

Notre Dame will play Fredericktown on February 23rd at 3:30 p.m.
