Waldner Only Dexter Wrestler Still in Contention for Medal at State

Columbia, Missouri - The Dexter Bearcat wrestling team entered the Class 2 State Wrestling Tournament with 11 athletes.  Today only one remains following the second round at the University of Missouri's Mizzou Arena.

Travis Waldner, a junior at Dexter High School, lost in the 138 lb quarterfinal on Friday, February 15, 2019 and will face Elias Barrientos of Monett in the 3rd round of wrestlebacks on Friday evening.  Waldner finished third last year in the 126 lb weight class.

Chase Cordia of Osage beat Waldner 7-5 in overtime.  Waldner then pinned Evan Dowdy of Notre Dame in 1:48.  Waldner must win his next three matches to finish third in state.

Dawson Jones 126 lbs and Colten Gibson 220 lbs also dropped their quarterfinal matches today.

Jones was beat by Zach Redwine of Pleasant Hill by major decision.  Kade Wilmes of Maryville then beat Jones in the second round of wrestlebacks.

Dalton Bingman of Priory beat Gibson and Steven Johnson of Fulton eliminated his by pinning him in 1:49 in the second round of wrestleback.

Bryston Pemberton 120 lb weight class and Jett Featherston 195 lb weight class both lost their matches in the second round of wrestlebacks.

Braxton Rickart of Excelsior Springs pinned Pemberton in 1:12 and Judah Christopherson of Lincoln Prep beat Featherston 3-1.
