Bernie School Board Meeting Minutes - February 12, 2018

Bernie, Missouri - The Board of Education met in regular session Monday, February 12, 2018. Below are the meeting minutes.

The Board approved student trips for FFA to South Haven, MS, March 9th, FFA to Jefferson City, MO April 12th and FFA to State Convention in Columbia, April 18-21st.

The Board approved the 2018/2019 school calendar.

Program evaluations on Co-Curricular Activities, Discipline and A+ were approved. The A+ Assurance statement was re-adopted thereby allowing Bernie students who qualify to obtain 2 years of tuition at a Community College or Tech school.

The Board approved adding Blake Trover, Kristy Howell, Samantha Henson, Candace Hodges and Marisa McGowan to the Substitute Teacher Employee List.

The Board approved January Policy Updates and Regulations.

The Board accepted the letter of intent to retire from Edna Smith, 4th Grade Elementary Teacher, Lynette Thomason, Elementary Reading Interventionist and the resignation from Kelli Anthony as the Junior High Cheerleading Sponsor.

The Board approved the financial statement and paying the monthly bills.

During executive session: Principal contracts for the 2018/2019 school year were awarded to Tommie Ellenburg and Lucas McKinnis.

The board approved Beth Shaffer as the Jr. High Volleyball Coach Assistant.

The Board approved the reassignment of Palisa Huber as the Elementary Interventionist for the 2018/19 school year.

Bloomfield, Missouri - The Bloomfield School Board met for their regularly schedule board meeting on Monday, February 12, 2018. Below are the minutes from the meeting.

The board approved:

1. Two policies and two procedures concerning cybersecurity;

2. The 2018-19 School Calendar

3. Donation of $100 to Project Prom and allow them to use school buses for the event;

4. The solicitation of bus bids.

The building principals gave their building reports. I informed the board of the district's MODOT bus inspection scheduled for March 16, the SEMO Superintendent's Banquet in April, and gave a legislative update.

In executive session, the board approved:

1. Subsitutes Zach Goode, Allen Moss, Candace Hodges, and Christina Scherer pending proper

paperwork

2. The resignation of Timothy Bolin at the end of the 2017-18 school year

3. The hiring of Amy Battles for JH volleyball assistant coach for the 2017-18 school year

4. The extension of contracts through the 2019-20 school year for principals Sabrina Skaggs, Louis

Bell, and Jason Karnes.

PBHS Continues to Offer ACT for FREE Despite State Cut

Poplar Bluff, Missouri - The Poplar Bluff School District will offer the ACT exam to High School juniors one time free of charge in April.

The college admissions test, previously state-funded, was cut from the Missouri budget this school year. To eliminate the possible barrier preventing students from exploring college options, the R-I Board of Education voted unanimously in November to pick up the tab – at a discounted group rate.

“Our local board was gracious enough to allow us to do this,” said Scott Dill, superintendent. “It’s one of those threshold moments in a student’s academic career that may be a deciding factor in whether or not a student extends education to a post-secondary environment.”

Student ACT participation more than doubled since the fee was waived during 2014/15, according to information PBHS Principal Mike Owen reported to the school board. In a survey asking over 300 juniors whether they would be interested in taking the exam voluntarily, at no cost, half signed up.

Over 60 percent of PBHS students go on to college, according to the district report card recently released by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Of that percentage, about 20 percent of graduates go straight to four-year higher education institutions.

The ACT is accepted at all universities in the United States, and is the predominant college placement test used in the Midwest, according to Tamara Day, PBHS counseling department head.

“With the opportunity to take it for free, a student who may be wouldn’t have taken it otherwise, could score better than they imagined, and realize: ‘I am college material. I have what it takes,’” Day stated.

The four-hour test will be offered free of charge on Tuesday, April 3, at PBHS with a make-up date of Tuesday, April 24. The test may be retaken up to six additional times at a cost of $46 or $62.50 including the writing component.

S.W. Elementary Second Grade Students Earn 3Rs Flag

Dexter, Missouri - The Second Grade classroom of Mrs. Massey earned the Southwest Elementary Positive Behavioral Support Reward Flag for February 2018.

School Wide Positive Behavioral Support (SWPBS) award is presented at the start of each month at Southwest Elementary. One classroom in each grade is recognized for exhibiting the high character with regard to observing the school's 3R's.

The 3R's stand for being Respectful, Ready to Learn and Responsible. The class with the highest attendance average, combined with the fewest disciplinary measures and general good character are awarded a 3R red flag to be posted in their classroom for the next month. The students are also awarded "Cat in the Hat" capes to wear and parade around the gym before returning to class. This year's theme is Dr. Seuss!
